山のぼりゲーム or Yamanobori (a.k.a. Mountain Climbing Game) was a Japanese "Eremeka" type arcade game released in 1981 by Komaya. At the time of its release, video games were already in the mainstream, but the simple addicting challenge of the game had caught the hearts of many children and became one of the most popular Japanese electromechanical style games. For this reason, the game can still be found in the corners of many Japanese candy stores & arcades and has since been rediscovered as a challenging representative of "reggae" (Japanese retro games). Today, modern players have reembraced their nostalgia for this classic title, hosting tournament challenges, and adding new competitive rules & scoring to the original “simple” game objective.

This version of Yamanobori represents our interpretation of the Japanese tournament rules & scoring; where the player may climb to the top in the least amount of time (for an added time bonus), or they may score additional points by attempting a “landslide”. A landslide run begins when the player climbs to the space right before the top of the mountain (marked by the glowing green compass), but instead of advancing all the way to the top (for a prize), they instead backtrack past all the obstacles in reverse, in an attempt to reach the START sign and then climb back up the mountain again before time runs out. The further you backtrack without hitting an obstacle, the higher your score. However, touching any obstacles along the way will send you BACK TO START and reset your score to 0, making the landslide run the ultimate challenge of risk versus reward.

In addition to including the Tournament rules for scoring, we have also added a SETTINGS MENU with accessible difficulty levels (which visually adjusts the speed of the obstacles) to allow players to easily practice the basic game objective, or attempt the landslide challenge. Scoring is adjusted for each difficulty setting.

Very cool game JP.  Brings me back to the Wildwood NJ boardwalk days.  Love the nostalgia.

I do have one quick question.  I cant adjust the size to fit my screen just right.  Any ideas or can it just not be adjusted?

Thanks again!!!

I guess it can be adjusted, it is just a VPX table, only with lights, no other objects. If you read the read-me file it say that you should do:

NOTE: MAKE SURE TO SWITCH YOUR DISPLAY SETTINGS SCALE TO 100% BEFORE RUNNING.

I'm not sure what animatorPinballFan actually meant with that line, but maybe you have your graphic card to render the screen double in size and then rescale it. Some seem that the result is better.

Maybe post a screenshot of what you see. But as I said it is a normal VPX table.

Thanks for the reply JP.  What I mean by adjust it is, stretch it with the x & y scale in the Camera/Light/Material menu.  If I can't that is fine.  But it does not adjust like all the other tables.  I would like to lose some of the apron.  Like I said, it is fine if I can't. But I am an anal bastard and like things just right.  And every cabinet is different.

Thanks again!

I see the table has no height at all, so the other scale does not seem to work. You can try adding a wall, make it invisible, and play with the height of the wall, like for ex. 200 units height, and see if it has any effect on the size of the table

JP

put a wall of any size, height does not matter

then put a flipper

i do not know why it seems to have to be a flipper?

but then the table will scale tilt etc

the wall can be invisible with a height of 0

the flipper has to be visible, but it can be off the table so it wont show on screen

I have no idea why a wall and a flipper

A ramp did not work exactly right, and none of the other objects seemed to work

but 1 wall + 1 flipper worked fine

even on a totally empty table

Just played a round Yamanobori.

I've never seen this game before.
I will still try to climb the summit today :)

I love visual pinball tables but allso non pinball tables on visual pinball too.

It's just great what you can do with VP8 - VPX.

Thank you very much for this implementation.
