First, thanks for allowing me to the group. 

 

A quick summary. A long-time dear friend died a few months ago. 

Via his adult son, I now have his virtual pinball cabinet. He had not owned it

long before his unexpected death. It is made by Virtua Pin... 7k on their website.

 

He and I collaborated on MAME years ago. I owned a game/pool room (how I

met him), and we took 2 old cabinets and built 2 MAME arcade machines. 

This pinball is way beyond what I dealt with in MAME.

 

The situation -

Got it home, plugged in, booted up. A shortcut on the desktop labeled "Tables"

took me to the Visual Pinball folder. I had looked into this enough to know the

vpx files were the game files. I clicked on Guns N Roses file and it played perfectly.

When I came out of it to try another game, the DMD would not light up. Went back

to GNR, it wouldn't light up again either. Full reboot, back to GNR, and it played fine.

No other game would pull up the DMD board after reboot.. which meant they wouldn't

take credits as well, even tho the playing field and backboard displayed perfectly.

I found that approximately 2 out of 20 or so games he had WOULD take a credit

and play... but without the DMD board, there was no scoring to be seen, nothing

on that board.

 

I've had it about 5 days now... played a lot of GNR, watched a bunch of videos on

YT just trying to absorb some of the basics. Today, I lost two things on GNR. The 

sound of the flippers and bumpers, all other sounds okay. The button that adds

credits also quit working. I went into the game menu of GNR and set it to free play.

It plays and looks great, just no bumper or flipper sounds. 

 

I considered Pinup Popper, but he (nailbuster) states "Note: This is for NEW installs

only, DO NOT install overtop an existing virtual pinball cabinet!!" so I'm hesitant to do

that. 

 

The related software that I've found on the PC is -

Virtual Pinball 10.7.2

PinballX 6.5.6

DMD Extensions 2.2.2.0

 

There is also a desktop icon for "Virtua Pin Controller". I presume this is something from

the maker of the cabinet, as it's the same name. Proprietary software?

I tried to call the maker at the number on his website yesterday, no answer. And I'd

really like to know a little more before trying him again, as I don't feel I know enough

yet to ask or phrase the proper questions.

 

I'd also like to ask one simpler question. If I were to remove everything related to pinball,

i.e. Virtual Pinball, PinballX, vpx and b2s files.. and start over. what would be the very first

piece of software to install? I hate to remove anything from Virtua Pin as I don't know if I could 

get that back. I have none of my friends receipts or records other than some of the

literature that came with the PC and a disc for his audio card.

 

Thanks for lettin' me in... thanks for any replies. My friend was an electrical engineer,

died at 51. I'm sure this stuff was a cakewalk for him. At 69, not so much for me.

1. Yeah, I've seen them ... they look cool but too pricey for me 3-years ago when I was looking to buy/build my first cabinet. My current 3-screen cabinet is more of a DIY creation.

 

2. That is a good start ... build on that knowledge. I suggest you start documenting things.

 

3. That's a good sign.

 

4. Good.

 

5. Could be various things. Troubleshoot like a Windows computer or MAME cabinet.

 

6. Never used it. I use MJR's Pinball-Y as my "Front-End" program. Sounds like yours is Pinball-X .

7. Sounds about right. I ran VPX v10.7.2 for many years (on Windows-10 and then on Windows-11)

 

8. Yes, I think so. I'm guessing a proprietary Pinscape interface for the Ball-Plunger's calibration and maybe config for the buttons? You will have to run it and look. Us DIY-ers can't run/test it ... AFAIK, that's unique to those pre-built Virtua-Pin cabinets.

 

9. It sounds like it is mostly working, so I would not suggest doing that if you do not know what you are doing.

 

But I suppose the "quick answer" is:

 

I would do a full-install with Toxie's main-installer file of VPX v10.8.0 for Windows. Get one Table running perfectly (like maybe T2 or Theatre of Magic) on all 3 screens and with adequate sound ... directly from the VPX-Editor.

 

But the "reality based answer" is more like this (including most of my other posts in this thread). There is a lot of "layers" and supplemental programs that all work together.
