So, I've been wondering: There's those games everybody's talking about: Final Fantasy, Halo, the Mario franchise, you get the idea.
But what about the games that go by unnoticed? I say these games deserve some recognition!
I'll start it off with the entire "Street" series by EA Sports BIG. Fifa, NFL and NBA got their parts. I'm currently playing NFL Street 2 and that game kicks ass. Plain and simple. It's basically the same formula the Blitz series works on: Screw realism. Who needs realism when you can go for a two point conversion, get intercepted in the endzone, have the interceptor run almost the whole way, just to hit him before he makes the TD. He fumbles, you recover and go all the way back for the conversion. I'm not making this up, just had it happen.
Anyway, give me some underrated games! Arcade is fine too.

Well, for my part I don't get most games - who needs realism eh? Realism aside, one that's as frustrating as hell is Disney Golf on a PS2 - and no, I'm not kidding. This is harder than you might imagine and some of the courses would give Tiger Woods a challenge.
The Sky course - jeeze, was the developer on drugs when he devised this course. Play on your own or against a friend. Good fun but bloody hard.
Probably not the reply you were hoping for but it's all I can give for underrated.

Reminds me of the good old Mario Golf for the N64. A flying course in the mountains... jup, that's a crack case to me.
Anyway, every reply is good when there's at least one game in it.

I still own Final fantasy Tactics for the ps1! it's a great strategy game sure the graphics aren'ty the best(still have yet to beat it!) but the music rocks thru stereo speakers and the gameplay is good too.
Another good game is Gladius a real time strategy game where up to 3 people can control figures in the fights!
since we're off the pinball subject, how's about the Ratchet andClank series? always good for a dumbed-down shoot-em-up! I have the first one in the series, and sometimes I like to pop it in and just blast the hell out of everything! good mindless shooting!
oh, and for those of you with live in gals/wives/concubines get ICCO a great thinking game with georgeous graphics and engaging gameplay

I still play asteroids, dig dug, etc. These are the games that ate many many quarters!!!!
I used to play MULE on a commodore 64. Fun game!
And just about my all time fave....Dreadnaught Factor for either Intellivision or Atari 5200. Simple graphics but the game
just absorbs you!!! Kinda like asteroids.

Gradius
Gradius II
Gradius III
Gradius Gaiden
Gradius IV
Gradius Generations
Gradius V
Salamander
Life Force
Salamander 2
I say the gradius games are underrated. Many people look past these games because they are so darn HARD!!!.
Yes that is true that these games are quite challenging even I have never completed any of them except Life Force for the NES w/ the help of the famous Konami code and I play them on the easiest level and they are still hard.
But these games are addicting just like all SHMUPS.
I just love shooters.

I have been gaming for a long time, I could really go off on this post, but will try to keep it short. Here is a list of independent or lessor known games that I know personally to be top shelf (not in any particular order):
1. Torchlight - PC : If you liked diablo or any action centric rpg, check this one out.
2. Wetrix + - Dreamcast : Screen shots look silly, but this is the puzzle game equivalent of crack
3. Ikaruga - Dreamcast : The beat vertical scrolling shooter of all time (imo)
4. Colony Wars Series - PSX : Awesome 3d arcade space flight combat
5. Rouge Squadron Series - Gamecube : Same as #4 but better, 2 player co-op on the alderon mission!
6. Blazblue Series - Multiple : My current favorite 2d fighting series
7. Plants vs Zombies - PC : Simple tower defense, super fun
8. Machinarium - PC : Old school point and click adventure w/ clever puzzles & amazing art & sound
9. Weird Worlds - PC : Just found this, casual star-control type space strategy. Very addictive.
10. Visual Pinball/Pinmame/FP - PC : Incredible pinball simulations supported entirely by an equally incredible online community. Known only to pinheads and their friends and associates, one of the best kept (unintentional) secrets in top notch gaming on the net.
Most of the PC titles mentioned above have very low system requirements, but deliver a lot of bang just the same. I could rattle on and on here but I gotta stop myself.

Legend of Legaia and Legend of Dragoon (both rpg's) for the PSX, Midnight Express (arcade), Altered Beast (arcade) (spent a lot of quarters on that one
), Wardner (arcade) solid gameplay for a little known machine, xevious (arcade), and Vanguard (arcade although kinda of well known, you just got to love being able to shoot from 4 directions without having to rotate the ship
).
I could have been smart, but I never learned anything by being smart!

Playstation 1
Jumping Flash - a different slant on a 3d platformer and fantastic.
Vib Ribbon - quite well known but I don't think it sold that well.
N2O - Excellent arcade game similar to tempest.
Bust a move(bust a groove) - Dance off game. Great with 2 players. There is an online game now with almost identical gameplay.
Dreamcast
Space Channel 5 part2. As far as I now never relesed in the west which is a shame as it's funny and far far better than the first game.
Powerstone 2. The first game had lots of praise but this one was slated. And I don't know why as it's a great multiplayer game and actually makes an effort to be different to the prequel.
REZ - amazing musical rail shooter. Was hard to get hold of but can now be bought on xbox live in beautiful HD.
PS2
Frequency and Amplitude - PS2 - tron styled music mixing arcade games, 2 of the best music games ever. From Harmonix who later created Guitar hero.
Primal - Action adventure involving demons and a gargoyle sidekick. Loved the story, great characters - shame a sequel was never made.
Shadow of the Collosus -PS2 - Truly amazing game full of emotion. Nothing else quite like it.
Splashdown/splashdown2. Over the top jetski games. Much better that the very overrated Waverace games imo.
Gamecube
Billy hatcher and the giant egg - From sonic team. A fun and quite original 3d platformer which only came out on the gamecube.
Luigi's mansion - Dismissed by many, actually a very enjoyable (if slightly old fasioned) adventure game.
Xbox 360
The Darkness - Forget halo, this is a truly great visceral FPS (sorry never understood what's so special about halo)
Kameo - one of the earlier 360 games and ignored by many due to the cartoony visuals. One of the most entertaining games I've played on the 360.

I grew up with a Genesis, and besides Sonic 2 which I played almost all the time (but never was able to beat lol), I loved Lethal Enforcers 2 with the Justifier gun peripheral and Cyborg Justice. Cyborg Justice was awesome because you could rip your enemy's robot arm off and then do a move and rip his torso off, absorbing his energy. Cool weapons, too.
I also liked some of the other Sonic related games as well, like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (in my opinion, the BEST Tetris-styled game), and Sonic Spinball (Sonic + pinball = SWEET).
My favorites by far have already been mentioned though, Shadow of the Colossus and REZ. I do have it for the 360 and it is AMAZING, but the PS2 and Dreamcast version rock too.
I'm rambling now, so I better stop...

the gold cartridge: Legend of Zelda for the NES the first with a battery back up; no more passwords!, Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System, Shining force same system,
Doom yup the original for any number or systems but I think it came out first on the NES, FF7 for the PS1 that materia collecting and chocobo racing/raising was great and of course who could forget when Aerith got murdered?) ZORK for the Atari 1040 XL and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy both text games before there was anything like a game with pictures! (video games you newbs) Space Wars (the arcade game) Virtua Fighter (also Arcade) and the first Csstlevania for the PS1 and last but certainly not the least and a blast with 4 people, GAUNTLET the arcade game
oooh I loved that mean bean machine that game rocked! all those beans(pills to you and me) multiplying all over your opponents screen was great and yeah sonic spinball a cool game and a first of its kind...a pinball action rpg thing

Definately one of the best games ever!
