I’ve been asked a bit recently about arcade effects and thought I’d share the information below.

In game effects ( IGFX ),  also known as arcade effects ( AFX ), or Retro Game Effects ( RGFX ) are a key part of what DOFLinx does with both Mame and FBNeo game emulators.  This means it delivers live scores and effects based on game progress for both Windows and Linux platforms.  DOFLinx supports all retro arcade games, but currently has game specific support for nearly 1000 retro arcade games.

DOFLinx “polls” the emulator and gets triggers from the game being played in that emulator.  It then links (hence the play on words, linx) those triggers to actions.  Actions are when an output, sometimes called toys by the pinball cabinet community are run.  DOFLinx runs all of the standard arcade and pinball toys such as RGB buttons, mono buttons, knocker, flashers, solenoids, addressable LEDs, shaker and gear motors, chimes, bell, etc,  plus the full range of Pixelcade devices, and the freeware DOF2DMD tool.  Custom actions can be setup to drive almost anything.

DOFLinx started life in July 2016 and has had many additions, platform and integration expansions since that time.  Integration to get live scores and other in game events was added for Mame in 2017 and FBNeo in 2024.  As such, it is the most mature in its class and continues with ongoing development for the arcade and pinball community.

DOFLinx is free and available to all, although I do appreciate donations to cover some ongoing costs.  The main aim is for everyone to enjoy their gaming and have fun.
