(much of this post is in quotes for a reason that will become apparent once you read the whole thing - PLEASE do not skip!)

"So, I've been setting up my own vpin table, using VPX on a miniPC running Batocera. It was going very well until today, just I was pretty sure I was finished. All my tables were functioning without ANY issues whatsoever. Then I went back to do one more verification, and ALL of them were rotated 90 degrees and shoved up to the top of the screen.

I literally changed NO settings before this began. I verified my tables were working, turned everything off, then booted it up again a few hours later for a verification and it was like this.

I cannot access any VPX menu - if I hit Escape to bring up the VPX menus, the entire system freezes and I have to hard reset the PC. I can only change things in the Batocera settings(or by going into the file manager) because of this

I wanted to post a photo, but the forum won't let me do so. Best way I can describe is that the main playfield is rotated 90 degrees and shoved up to the top of the screen, but the DMD is in the spot I originally set it to(covering much of the table now), and it runs and accepts inputs like nothing was ever wrong. Like I said, I've no idea what changed - I altered no settings, and even trying to clear the existing settings did nothing.

Things I have tried which have failed:

Renaming the .ini files for both vpin itself AND each individual table.

Tweaking various Batocera video setting(including screen orientation).

And yes, I rebooted after EVERY tweak to make sure the changes should be applied.

I have no idea what to do from here or what's gone wrong. Any and all (actual) advice would be helpful."

The above is what I had written out for a help request to try and fix the issue, however before I posting I opted to turn the unit back on and give things a try to see if I can notice any details that might tip someone off to the root cause and/or solution. And lo and behold.... THE ISSUE HAD FIXED ITSELF.

I kid you not, I again did NOTHING between what I outlined above and this double-check, and everything is now running fine. So my question now is: Does anyone have idea idea what might have happened so that I can PREVENT a recurrence?

I tried that, it kept giving me an error about the file extension not being allowed. Even though its just a jpg. I'll give it another go when I get home from work on the off chance it might tip someone off to the potential issue better than my explanation - forum software was probably just glitching.

Formula, I wouldn't sweat this, I've seen plenty of weird occurrences on my cab that fixed themselves or could be fixed by rebooting/replugging or similar. I've had all VPX settings wiped out and reset to default as well so I recommend you do regular backups of VPX, Pinupplayer and front end folder + registry entries for VPinMAME so you can easily revert in case something screws itself up.

The thing that's got me all freaked out about everything is that it survived multiple reboots and poweroffs before fixing itself.

I have no idea how to back up registry entries in Batocera. I'll have to look into that.

That's what I though, but I'm no expert on the matter.
