Time to retire the FX6350 and the HD6950/RX470 which served me very well until lately with the ever increasing details and quality of beautifully stunning tables, installed a I7 5960 and a RTX3060TI which should give me a lot more horsepower than what I had. Question is with so many versions of VPX , B2S server, DMD extensions, I am perplexed as to what will meet in the middle as most reliable. Does anyone have a software version set that's treating them well, or should I just go trial and error . Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you dont want to be a beta tester, stick with vpx 10.7.3 for now
10.8 will be coming soon but not just yet

 

DMD extensions, take freezys latest public NON BETA release, though the Beta 1 release does work just fine
FLex DMD is version 1.9

 

B2S server is kind of not really in beta, so the latest build from github actions should be fine

 

Same with VpinMAME

Easiest path is to use the Baller Installer.  Then for FP follow TerryRed's latest instructions for updates.  From there you can update to VPX 10.8 beta, latest pinmame, latest B2S server, etc.  Most of the online how to guides or videos are a little out of date but that is the life of a virtual pinballer.  You have to stay active...read all the post...and constantly update.

 

From this point after everything is updated you can decide on a front end.  The Baller Installer includes Popper but you don't have to use it.  I prefer PinballY.

Id probably not use the baller installer, if you don't use popper or pup.
It's great if you use those, and want to go with it's config, but if you aren't and don't you are better off sticking with how how have been doing it.

Probably thinking too far ahead, one step at a time.

is the PC a vpin only cab?

 

if it does not need update, then just turn updates off and it wont ever get them (no doesnt need a single piece of 3rd party hardware)
Vpins dont really need updates.

 

and if it doesnt do web browsing, disable internet on it also (yes it can be on your lan and have no internet) and then you can disable antivirus
You just shove new tables on it from another PC.

 

If you already used the baller installer, then remain with it, and just wait until it update, for you to get updates.

If you go manually mucking about, you can mess up the baller install, so i am told by those guys.

Windows 10 updates are less likely to break something now that they will no longer contain any new function. Probably still best to disconnect the PC from the internet, if you can.

Do what you need to do and then
Open services.msc

Disable background intelligent transfer service
Disable windows update

 

Windows updates is now off

 

 

 

Open control panel, click network and sharing center.
on left click change adapter settings

double click the network adapter you connect the cab with

click properties

 

double click internet protocol version 4
Change obtain IP automatically to use the following.
Give cab an IP address at the end of your home IP block
If your home IP's are 192.168.1.x, then set cab to like 192.168.1.254, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.254
You can point DNS back to itself.

Cab will be on network now, but will have no internet

Other pc in house can talk to cab, cant RDP into cab, can connect to a shared folder etc
cab cannot see internet, but cab can see a pc in house or a NAS drive.

So you can grab tables, test them out on whatever pc, and if you like them, send them to the cab, by sharing its pinball folders.

 

To disable windows defender, 1st turn off tamper protection

 

 

 

1. Press Win + S and type Windows Security. Click on the Open option to launch the app.
2. Click on the Virus and threat protection option on the home page.
3. Find the Virus and threat protection settings section and click on the Manage settings option.
4. Scroll down and click on the Tamper Protection toggle to disable it

 

then in an admin command prompt window paste
 

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Microsoft Defender" /v DisableAntiSpyware /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

reboot machine, windows defender is off

NAS drive, hmmmmmmmmmmm the wheels are turnin! I Made a NAS with a raspberrypi and a few harddrives with openmedia vault a few years ago, its a great free linux program. Thanks, now my scratch disk is full lol

I have a fairly crappy and slow old laptop.
It's only real use is, File server, Media server, Ebook server and it serves a printer that has no network capabilities.
So i dont want it updating, i dont need AV running on it and i dont need it to see outside the house, just talk to machines in the house.

Anything can be a NAS really.
Remember those 8 and 10 inch netbooks that were all the rage about 12 years ago?
Yea they suck balls with their tiny screens and anemic cpu's, throw a couple 4tb HDD's in a couple USB cases
and plug them in.
Instant low power NAS, fast enough for most home use.

I turned two old Dell towers and a collection of old hard drives into two NAS servers using Unraid.  One NAS is 13 TB and the other is 6.5 TB.  They perform great and the only cost was the Unraid license.

ok heres the latest dilemma, with the rtx3060ti it has 1 hdmi, 3 gameport connections. I cannot get playfield to stick as monitor 1 and my smaller 4:3 monitor as monitor 2 even going into regedit and renaming the connectivity and configuration files so on restart with the monitor I want as #1 playfield only plugged in then plugging in the one I want as #2 the 4:3 monitor, it always goes back to the 4:3 as #1. The 4:3 monitor does have a vga to hdmi adapter but it worked fine on my ATI cards. Any clue I've searched and havent found much on changing monitor numbers other than the registry trick and making monitor #2 as primary does not work.

You don't and it doesnt matter enumeration wise

 

1st save this as a batfile and then run as admin, to undo all the jacking around you've been doing

 

reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\ScaleFactors
pause
shutdown /r /t 5

When PC reboots
Set Playfield as PRIMARY DESKTOP
and put it to the LEFT of the backglass
and make sure the tops are perfectly inline.

 

Then set VPX video prefs appropriately

I just found out that making monitor#2 playfield as primary did work and I changed the values in b2s server to  2 cause back glass was on top of playfield and it is working. LOL BUT im going change it all back and  do it the way you just said to , many thanks wiesshund your knowledge and willingness to help the novices is just awesome thank you very much.

 

 

edit: there isnt a scalefactor value in the registry in that location, any ideas?
It is working fine with the  screentxt changes though maybe should leave well enough alone ?
