Hello all,

 

So, first off. I am an idiot!

 

I am building a virtual pinball cabinet and have come quite far with it. I am not that well off, so I buy things on a monthly basis, as my income allow.

 

This past weekend I finally got to working on the back box. Playfield screen and second monitor have been installed for a while, and this weekend I got to install the third monitor (the full dmd). While doing that I dropped a screwdriver onto the playfield screen, and when I fired the whole thing on to test the new monitor installation, reality hit....

 

I HAD BROKEN MY PLAYFIELD MONITOR!!!

 

Long story short. I have to replace it, and this is my thinking:

 

I know everyone recommends OLEDs, 120 hz and pc monitors over tv's. But my reality is that I don't have that kind of budget. I am still not sure how much play this cab will get in the future, so I rather want a complete setup with budget components, than the best setup that WAY exceeds my budget.

 

So to my question:

 

My (now broken) playfield was an LG 43UP8100. This is an IPS panel, chosen because I wanted the best viewing angels compared to a VA panel. The 43 is the size, UP is the series and year (the new one is called UQ) and the 8100 is the model. I could chose the new 43UQ8000 (the 8000 compared to the 8100 is only relating to the stand, which is not in use) since the dimensions is the same and it will fit 1:1 in the cabinet.

 

What I am questioning is, should I go with a VA panel in the same price range? My own thinking says no, since the viewing angles are way worse. But the black levels and brightness is way better, and people (like way of the wrench) seems to find the VA panel quite good.

 

So if you DON'T go OLED, and don't have the money to go for the best, what modern budget panel do you chose, and why?

Just stick with the IPS panel i guess.
As for viewing angles, i can see my IPS from an angle that is so stupid that no one should have the right to try to play pinball like that
You'd have to kneel down with your chin on the lockbar, and then you deserve to be smacked.

 

Know someone that was going to buy an OLED, it was 2nd hand but was not old

Guess what?

It had burn in, and it was noticeable
so guess what he did not buy.
Vpins potentially have may static objects on the screen that just sit there.

 

Best panel would probably be a 43" asus rog strix

but go ahead and get the 43UQ8000  is if fits your budget
SHame the cost of replacing the LCD panel exceeds replacing the entire unit

 

May i suggest, in future, when doing anything that entails not having plate glass over the playfield, cover it with a thick blanket
or a cheap chunk of 4" foam rubber

Thanks wiesshund for your thoughts. And your final suggestion is exactly why I started stating I am an idiot I know better.

I think I just might go with the IPS panel.

The reason for me asking you fine folks about your experiences, is because I did get good viewing angles but it all was a bit washed out. I missed how the VA panels seem to have the colors pop quite a bit more with better contrast. And if an IPS give ridiculous viewing angles, perhaps there would be room for less ridiculous viewing angles like the VA panel have? I am just not sure if a VA panels viewing angles are so narrow that back of the playfield gets totally washed out? Every VA panel review mention horrible viewing angles, but are we within the sweetspot in a cab? Any VA panel owners?

By the way. Funny thing is, the asus rog strix is actually a VA panel. Hmmm.
