Not sure what you're asking, please clarify. Most of the sound mixes are available directly from Pinsound Community downloads http://pinsound-comm...ndex.php?/files

What is the advantage of Altsound?  The web site doesn't provide much detail about it.

None. Altsound is an older implementation that does not require PinSound Studio software to work. Some people on FB think that not having to run PinSound Studio in the background will somehow give a turbo boost in VP performance. The upshot is that they just can't use any of the pinsound-community.org remixes from the last couple of years.

There obviously should be some advantage of having the altsound support, otherwise it wouldn't be there as a feature... perhaps better sounds than the ROM-based ones in some tables?

Certain ROMs have notoriously bad, distorted sound, if the altsound is of better quality, that'd be beneficial. Also, it seems to be a lot easier using this with support straight from VPinMAME than having to install and run yet more software.

I never tried altsound, so cannot tell how different it is though. And of course, PinSound has more features and the remixes if someone cares for those.

altsound was the initial implementation and pinsound the final implementation. Altsound (Soundmode =1) was never deprecated as it was functional, at least until PinSound encrypted the folder names which originally referenced memory addresses on all their original and community sound mixes..

Now, lucky1 did extend and expand the altsound capability to add Whitestar support and gain, ducking, looping features, etc. So it is the open source solution. It's just that no one that I'm aware of has done any mixes with it outside of muting roms to allow music support from PupPacks. The feature is open source, but then the issue is the vast majority of projects rely on copy-write protected music from other artists, OST, etc. which can be problematic to distribute or even demo on YouTube. Very few people doing these projects are musicians/audio engineers themselves. Current altsound is pretty clever about getting around this in that it can reference tracks on a CD rip that users acquire on their own. Again, I just don't know that anyone has really leveraged the capabilities. If you want to use anything from the last few years it requires PinSound Studio. If you don't use PinSound Studio then there is not much but the old projects from years ago that people have held on to.

In terms of using PinSound Studio, I've never noticed that it is a drag on the system. Can be launched in the background. Can be selectively launched and exit in any modern front-end. Why PinSound Studio is the piece of software that breaks the camel's back after dealing with B2S, DOF, DMDEXT, Pup, etc., I don't understand that position. But whatever.

I've been noticing that there's a few people that are against installing anything that doesn't come with VPX. Freezy, PinUp, SAMBuild, each have detractors, although PinUp adds the whole "I'm not going to pay attention to video on your original table, use the janky UltraDMD that's included and let us get on with pinball" reaction (and I've actually seen it as a criticism of the industry move away from DMD). I'm sure there's some people not liking FlexDMD coming in and adding another wrinkle, even though it's meant to be a compatible replacement for UltraDMD. I don't doubt that PinSound Studio slides into the same area.

I finally tried it once again to run several of the altsound packages from the above link in this thread, and it works well with sound mode 1.

I'm not completely sold on the significantly changed sound sets, but in some cases (like TAF) this is a notable improvement over the crackling ROM sounds. So in those special situations, this is a good enough option while keeping it close to the stock sound set - all without having to run more software in the background, which is a plus in my book.

Lower all the music. To about 15 gain. Open the games altsound folder. Order by size. Logically the largest files are the music. They will now be at the top. Bring up the csv file and edit them all. One by one.
