Pulling my hair out. I have Visual Pinball running perfect on my main computer. Downloaded a bunch of games, b2s, roms and tested each one to confirm they all worked. I finally just set up a new computer just for Pinball, installed everything, and then copied over all the tables/roms etc.

Whenever I try to launch a table it gives me the standard error about rom being terminated before start, check rom path/file name. The roms exist in the roms folder, are the correct filename (launch perfect on my main machine), paths are 100% correct in setup. I can even open the roms directly by running PinMame32.exe or by testing one in the Setup screen. So the roms work, are there, and named correctly.

I've already tried completely uninstalling Visual Pinball, deleted everything and reinstalled, and recopied the files over. Same exact problem. I'm not sure what else to try at this point. I'm not sure if it matters at all, but the Pinball computer has 3 monitors. Playfield, backglass, and separate monitor for the DMD. (where as my main computer where everything works only has 2 monitors)

Any one have any ideas?

Sounds like you’re trying to run tables in true full screen mode, without setting ddraw values to zero in regedit. Quick fix is to use windowed full screen mode. Select that under video options in VPX. Hope this is a fix for you!

Ben, you ROCK! Thank you so so much.

Seriously I spent probably close to 6 hours trying to figure out what the heck was wrong and why things didn't work. I simply checked that option and everything instantly worked!!

Question.. Is there any benefit to doing it one way or the other? I would think full screen mode would give better performance, no? If so, what is this ddraw hack thing you are talking about? Is it wortwhile to try going that route, or should I just leave it in windowed full screen?

That's correct. Fullscreen is better performance wise. What I have done is to export the registry end did a search/replace for all ddraw to 0. I also made sure way back then to set a entry for default with a ddraw value of 0. So, if I open a new rom. Ddraw will be correct right away.

Still, I run with it windowed. Reason is that I very often start/stop tables and change things. Full screen can be a beatard if you get errors and other stuff in that it hides messages that you else be able to see. I kind of can afford the performance hit - running a nvidia 1080.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely look into it. That also explains why previously when I'd pull up menus in the game I couldn't see/interact with any of the dialog boxes properly. Really appreciate the help. For now I may just leave it in Windowed FullScreen as I have a 1070 in there and it seems to run everything fine so far.

Thanks guys !

Had some tables that I need to run from the "internal" DMD instead of my external DMD and gives this error.

I also pulled a lot of hears out. Even reinstalled VPX including pinmame.

Thanks to this it is working fine.

Although I have a 2070 Video cars running all in 4k, I wanted to runin full screen mode (just a very smooth performance)

Again, Thanks for this post !
