Hello,

I have been having a heck of a time resetting high scores on Williams games like High Speed. I can get into the menu and reset them to 0 but when I play again, it doesn't let me input my initials. What am I doing wrong? Please help. :bye2:

Go into your nvram folder where you installed Visual Pinball and delete the nvram for that particular table. Next time you start table after the nvram has been deleted, it will start as if it was Factory Start Up. All scores will be wiped away.

For High Speed made by Williams, the nvram file will look like this.. hs_l4.nv

Simply delete hs_l4.nv from you nvram folder located where you installed Visual Pinball.

Now when table starts up, it will say factory settings, and you will have to press the number 9 on keyboard to initialize start of DMD.

Hope this helps you.

One thing you want to check before you delete the nvram file:

Go back into the ROM menu and check adjustment 13 - if this setting is set to OFF it will not record the four highest scores to date (i.e. this is deactivated).  Setting this option to ON will activate it again. (Default for this table is ON)

Hope this helps.

In VPMKeys.vbs you have this :

keyHiScoreReset  = 7   '(6)    Reset Hiscores

Never tried and haven't seen it used in any table either.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Anyone know how to reset high scores for a custom UltraDMD tables? (Like not emulated like a Williams table), these don't have NVRAM entries since it's not technically MAME and I can't find where to do that anywhere.

Sure. It is kind of buried inside the end of this wiki - about resetting a table to default.

https://vpinball.com...ble-to-default/

The program that is mentioned can edit a file that contains scores and other info that authors can use to store value into the VPReg.stg file.

BUT, authors also can choose to create basic text files. You will most probably find it in users folder and named something like the table. Look at Losermans tables, he often has a line in the script like this

Const HSFileName="LoveBug_71VPX.txt"

It defines the filename where to record the highscore. And these lines makes the records in the file.

  Set ScoreFile=FileObj.CreateTextFile(UserDirectory & HSFileName,True)
    ScoreFile.WriteLine 1
    ScoreFile.WriteLine Credits
    scorefile.writeline BallsPerGame
    ScoreFile.WriteLine ReplayLevel
    ScoreFile.WriteLine ReplayBalls
    ScoreFile.WriteLine ExtraBallFlag

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Older thread but I'm trying to find out how to delete high scores on non-EM tables. For EM tables I go into the User folder and can change them there. For others w/DMD's I've seen some scores in the script of some tables but if I edit those script errors happen.

The link in your post, as you know, is now DOA so I'm trying to find out how I change the high scores (cuz I want them to be realistic for most and I want my initials and other family members to have them).

Thanks!

If by non-EM tables you mean ROM based tables, then to reset the highscore you need to delete the nvram file of that rom. Remember some roms need to be initialized before they can run, so keep that zip file with all Bally and Gottlieb nvram files at hand :) (the file is in the menu "Getting started" )

I did that for a table and it reset them back to whatever their default ones are. Those are the ones I'm trying to change since I don't know who those people are and want to either start them at '0' or, drop at least one digit off the end. So instead of the High Scores 1, 2, 3 being 3M, 2M and 1M they either become all 0's or become 300K, 200K, 100K.

Pinball machines has in almost all cases (maybe all ?) a default high-score value. So, if you reset, they fall back to default. This default, can in some cases be set/adjusted, like you want them to. But, it requires knowing how to get into the rom menu and adjust the values. This is different from machine to machine. This is why ta2686 wrote the guides that you find in the menu of these forums. In theory though, you could use a hex editor, and edit the nvram files; but, also this will require different approaches pr. machine. Conclusion : Learn to play better.

Unfortunately we all can't be pinball experts so having the ability to change them is appreciated for "normal" players. I can see that it take an effort to change them so I'll approach it table by table for those that I really have an 'issue' with.

I guess those highscores are coded in the ROM, so if there isn't a setting in the rom's service menu, then you will need to live with them.

look up manual for said table

IF said table has the ability to change the default high score
then follow instructions in manual
if said table has no means to do that, you are stuck outside of making an attempt to hex edit the nvram

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways
