Hi. I am having a problem with UltraDMD (latest version 1.4xxx), and am looking for some suggestions on how to fix it. I am running Windows 10 on a new computer purchased a few months ago. I have a real DMD  (pinDMD v3). I have no problem with the DMD for game recreations that use a ROM and a DMD. However, I have a couple of original games, "America's Most Haunted", and "Champion's League", that have no ROM and use UltraDMD, and I am having problems with both of these.

The problem is that nothing will show on the DMD unless, before I launch the game, I do either of the  following:

1. Right click on UltraDMD and select "Run as Administrator", or

2. Right click on UltraDMD and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility" (and walk through the troubleshooting compatibility steps).

Either of these will let me run an Ultra DMD table once and the DMD will then display, but only for the duration of playing that particular table. If I stop the table and try to run it again, or try to play another table that uses UltraDMD, nothing shows on the DMD. I must then right click on UltraDMD and repeat either step 1 or 2 to get it to work.

I have right clicked on UltraDMD and opened the properties page for it and made sure that "Run as Administrator" is permanently checked, but that does not fix the problem. So whatever the right-click method of setting "Run as Administrator" is doing seems to be different than setting the "Run as Administrator" property for UltraDMD from its properties settings. This is a problem for me when I want to launch tables from PinballX, as it isn't very user friendly to first have to pause PinballX and reset the "Run as Administrator" property or walk through the "Troubleshoot Compatibility" steps via the "right-click" methods.

After I've made the temporary fix to UltraDMD which lets me run a table once, I've examined the registry settings for all registry entries with "UltraDMD" in their name and compared those registry settings to their values after running an UltraDMD table and found no differences. So it doesn't appear that the one-time fixes from methods 1 or 2 above are changing any relevant registry entries.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I may do to fix this issue.

http://vpinball.com/...-dmddevice-dll/

You could also re-register the dll ... open cmd prompt - go to where it is installed

run it  with a /i parameter. Eg.

ultradmd.exe /i

and you can configure it again with

ultradmd.exe /c

Hope this helps.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I skipped the line when reading this topic, I didn't realize his problem was with an actual DMD display, I am currently running a 3 monitor setup, but am having issues like he is (have to open ultradmd before launching a table in order to get ultradmd running) I'm just dumbfounded right now trying to get this to work. Overall, if I don't get this working, I'll just stick to dmd images for the meantime. But if anyone could point me in the right direction, that would really be appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time to reply and help solve issues.

Hi kenneumann,

I am the poster of the original message that started the thread. In answer to your question, I haven't found a solution to the problem yet. I kind of gave up on trying to solve it for the time being, and moved on to other issues in the hopes that I could come back to this later. So my memory is a little fuzzy on where I left off with this issue. But, I do seem to recall that after my original post, I discovered that either of the two methods that I described in the post for getting things to show on the DMD with Ultra DMD resulted in Ultra DMD actually running before I tried to launch a table. i.e., After either the "run as administrator" or the "troubleshoot compatibility" step, but before I launched a table, Ultra DMD showed up as running in the list of running processes. So I wonder if this is some sort of permissions problem, where a table running under Visual Pinball doesn't have the proper permissions to launch Ultra DMD, but if I launch Ultra DMD manually before I launch the table, it works. This is just a theory, and I am not familiar with Windows 10 permissions, so I don't know if it is true.

Thalamus - I believe I had tried the suggestions you gave in your thread, but I don't recall for sure. I will try that tonight when I'm home from work, and report back tomorrow.

Well, actually. Since VP 2.9 was just released I would advice you both to run the one-in-all installer. You get updated and it re-installs ultradmd for you. Ofc, if you run with SAM, you'll have to head over to universe and install that update as well.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Yeah, that was the first install I did. Nothing worked, so I tried older versions but still nothing worked. Then I uninstalled everything and went with the latest install again. Still having issues, so I gave up on this for now. I did however got help from another thread about moving my dmd to the third monitor(which is what I originally wanted). As of right now, I'm very happy with it! So Ultradmd is really not a concern for me as of yet. Thanks for your comment.

I tried an installation of 10.3, as well as the "ultradmd.exe /i" and "ultradmd.exe /c" suggestions from Thalamus last night. Unfortunately, neither one solved my problem.

Hmm. Look in installed programs, if you find ultradmd there, uninstall it - then, rerun the all-in-one installer. Normally, when running VP you need to set all the exe files to run as administrator. However, a few users has had problems BECAUSE they did ... in combination with Win10. If this isn't working. I'm out of suggestions.

I had this exact problem.  I solved it by taking the pinDMD.dll that was in the vpinmame folder and copying it to the XDMD folder and replace the XDMD pinDMD.dll since it was outdated.  I noticed that the size of the files were different.  The one in the XDMD folder was 12k and the one in the vpinmame folder was 68k.  Maybe this helps?

I would go further and say that pindmd.dll is outdated.

So I am tagging along on this now. I have done everything in this thread 10x. My ultradmd works once in a while. Some tables will work and others give me the ultradmd not found. I also can't hide teh virtual without the pindmd3 not working as well.  PBX also does not play any files.

When a table runs an ultradmd the ultradmd never shuts down in the task view.

Please help

When you say you've done everything x10 - do you mean you've followed my dmddevice guide ? I kind of need to know where your status are exactly and in which direction you are trying to get to. Example of a table that works vs one that don't would be nice as well.

I have done your DMV guide at least twice I even reinstalled my entire computer and did it once on top of that far as I can tell I have the most up-to-date pinDMD

A table that works the best so far is America's most haunted but it doesn't work every time xdmd seems to crash as well as Ultra DMD. As soon as I hide Ultra DMD the display quits working and it doesn't work every time either I have to open Task Manager close out multiple Ultra DMD threads and then it'll work again but it won't work back to back

Damn, thats the second time I've come across this. I had the same problem as you - but, I can't for the life of me remember how I resolved it. I do however for PBX use a post script that makes sure that the xdmd dies. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure I don't need it. In PBX my problem was - like you say, xdmd doesn't quit, so the display is occupied when I'm back at the menus. I've made some "real dmd videos" that I use while browsing tables.

You could at least try to put this in a script ....

c:\windows\system32\Taskkill /IM "UltraDMD.exe" /F

Can you tell me, on Championsl-eague table - do you have to use the fix or can you play it without doing anything to the table script ?
