File Name: Diner VPX

File Submitter: flupper1

File Submitted: 12 Mar 2017

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): Flupper

Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1990
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

Diner for VPX. Many thanks to: Tamoore, Bodydump, Ben Logan, George and Clark Kent.

Tips:
Contrast can be changed in-game with MagnaSave keys
table is angle-dependent to some degree, so in both FS and DT view, perspective changes result in artefacts on the transparent ramps
use day/night slider with care, due to many unlit primitives (better use ContrastSetting variable in script)
When using GlowBats and GlowBall, you can lower the day/night slider a lot
Many options in the beginning of the script

For best performance and stutter free experience, these are my settings:
- FPS limiter/sync 1 and Maximum pre-rendered frames 1
- Force exclusive fullscreen (otherwise I get ball stutter with a directb2s)

Requires VPX 10.2, Please let me know if there are any issues.
In the permission to MOD I ask that you contact me first, as I am really curious what you want to change. If I like the changes, I will ofcourse add them to this release.

Layback: 54

XY Rotation: 270
X Scale: 1.27
Y Scale: 1.63
Z Scale: 1
X Offset: -275
Y Offset: 0

Z Offset: -200

Is there a way to turn the brightness of the glow balls down a little in the script?

I'm stuck with VPX 10.1 but have got it working to satisfaction. I had to reduce elasticity overall quite a bit and also reduce flipper strength, but I like how I can hit the left drop targets by rebounding off the center ones. Only drawback is weak saucer shots, so not a bad compromise. This is superb work and the effort spent really shows. Agreed probably the best looking table yet.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but this is one hell of a good looking table and I wonder if the following will help maximise those good looks and minimise artifacting ?...... Table scaling and the need to keep them as low as possible, so as to maximise image quality was once a point of discussion here.

The idea was to set the X Scale to 1 and reduce the Y Scale to restore the format. This means zero X interpolation and minimal Y interpolation is needed to be carried out by VPX and this results in an increased visual quality.

Naturally, the table is reduced in size when doing this, so a greater negative Z Offset is used to restore the size to fit the screen.

Does anybody follow this and if so, is the improvement (if any) visible?

Really tasty, how good is this, all the options, the works, makes me want a kebab right now...Long ago Diner,Taxi and Pool Sharks where in the go to after the beers kebab shop and always had a game or three on those machines after I lined my stomach with kebab. :)

My take on the desktop daytime look for perhaps a few pixels more and a better look at the backend of the table...

dinerdt_t.jpg

* no visible ramp artefacts here with those changes unless I'm not just seeing it somehow?

Thanks flupper1!

Yes, you can do this in the script; there are RGB settings for each ball, you can lower them. For instance, green is 100,255,100; lower that to 50,128,50
