Windows 7 Home Premium x64 user here.

I'm trying to get the VPX version of Data East's TOMMY table working with VPinMAME, and I've been met with what I can only figure are the usual issues when trying to run VPinMAME for the first time.

I've tried reinstalling VPinMAME using the setup file, used the same file to point towards the correct directories, grabbed the correct rom file and despite all of these and running everything in Administrator mode, I'm still getting the usual "Machine 'tomy_400' (Tommy(4.0)) terminated before initialized, check the rom path or rom file!" error dialog before booting me to a completely dark table.

Here's the thing however; while the setup file is throwing up the same problem when trying to start the rom and telling me the zipfile is full of 0-byte length files with blank checksums (patently false), when booting the file through PinMAME32 which is included in the Visual Pinball package install, the rom works fine. It tells me that I'm missing literally all the balls but it boots and responds to key presses and credits.

I can't even begin to make any assumptions as to what went wrong for me, so anything I may be missing I would be willing to try.

Maybe try downloading the ROM again. Maybe your download was interupted and it produced a corrupt zip file.

The site was experiencing some problems earlier this week.

I just tried both ROMS from here and IPDB and they both work.

tomy_400.zip here..http://www.vpforums....ds&showfile=863

and if that doesn't work try downloading ROM from IPDB, here is direct link..http://mirror2.ipdb....79/tomy_400.zip

Hope this helps you.

Ah, that I didn't know.

What I do know is that I'm getting an identical file from IPDB and neither the Test nor VPX accept it as working, while PinMAME32 runs it just fine.

So the rom file is okay.

Check the table script to ensure your using the same rom as what the table is looking for?  Or change to the rom you want to use.....maybe try another rom?

Another version of Tommy or another game entirely?

Alright, eliminated the potential problem with the tomy_400 rom file by trying to run both Fathom and Eight Ball Deluxe, both tables and romsets producing the same dialogs.

Explain what you downloaded, where you installed it. Did you use the one-in-one installer ? Where did you install it c:\program files\visual pinball ? etc.

The more info we have, the better chance we have to help you.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

I used the all-in-one installer from this website and followed the installation guide, it went in C:\Visual Pinball, I've got everything running with Administrator priveliges and incompatability mode for Windows XP SP2. What else would help to tell?

Hmm. I believe the thing to do is to start with clean sheets. So, run the uninstaller. After that. Download the one-in-all installer from here :

http://www.vpforums....&showfile=11573 - choose : VPX2setup.zip - run the containing installer. Install it to a "new folder".

Eg. choose c:\visual_pinball

After this, don't follow any guide - we need to see to that the base-line is working. Now, download this file http://www.vpforums....&showfile=11618

Open the *.zip file - and put both the containing files into c:\visual_pinball\tables folder - once there you can try to start the table by double clicking the VPX file.

If that works. Well, then do the same for other tables, but if the other tables requires a rom file - put the rom file (named xxxxx.zip ) without opening it into.

c:\visual_pinball\vpinmame\roms folder.

Lets see if this get you somewhere.

If however the first table doesn't work - try to start c:\visual_pinball\vpinballx.exe as administrator and open the table by going to the "recent" file menu inside the program.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

i have personally ran into this myself and could not find any help,  i did eventually figure it out. basically your computer is not fast engouh, probably not enough ram, the fault you get doesn't make any sense but the computer is trying to load the table, rom, b2s possibly, etc. and it kinda crashes.  i tried lowering textures and settings, blah blah blah, nothing worked, finally the table was re-uploaded with much less polygons and it worked fine,

you can try lowering all your video settings down to lowest settings for testing to see if the table will load.
