Built a new cabinet and had this working for a day or two.  But suddenly my pinDMDv3 is simply coming up as "PinDMD not found".

Here's the backstory - I had been trying to get Pinball X working as a front end.  I got the paths screwed up for my Visual Pin directory (don't ask) so I decided to simply install VPX from scratch.

After trying to load VPX on the machine again, it has been failing ever since.  I have tried to go in and remove the registry entries for the individual games - I also found another article recommending simply resetting the "showpindmd"=dword:00000001 with "showpindmd"=dword:00000000 for all the tables, but that hasn't worked either.

I've copied the Bass.dll, pinDMD.dll and VpinMAME.dll back over and re-run the vpinmame setup to re-apply them, but still not showing up in any tables I try to launch and enable the pinDMD in.  I've also rebooted and reseated the USB cable in the pinDMD itself just to make sure and nothing seems to change.

Any help would be great.  At this point I'd be okay completely blowing away my VPX folders and starting over, but am unsure if there's anything I need to manually remove in the registry that might be screwing this up.

Thanks.

Nevermind, fixed it.  I ran the uninstaller in the couple visual pinball folders I had lingering around, removed all the directories, deleted everything from the registry related to visual pinball, ultradmd, b2s, etc.  Then reloaded VPX from scratch and the DMD suddenly started working again.  Pretty sure something was still tying it up in the registry, but since I'd removed all the game entries I really have no clue what it would have been.

Using the rom test in the pinMame setup tool is a good place to start with this sort of issue :)

I just reloaded my cab because I ran out of space on my old hard drive.  When PinballX loads the DMD lights up and looks great.  As soon as I launch a game, the table loads, the back glass loads, but nothing on the DMD.  I get the error PinDMD not found.  I have 2 tables(Medieval Madness, No Good Gofers) I downloaded fresh when I reinstalled everything, and 2 tables(Fish Tales and Flintstones) from my old hard drive that I knew the DMD worked with. I do have a check marks in: Use PinDMD and Cabinet mode in the default options of Vpinmame.  If I put the old hard drive back in, the DMD works. I ran the VPX installer 10.2 and followed the tutorial by GTXJoe which was great and much easier then the last time I setup my cab. Any ideas what I could have done wrong or what I need to check?  Any help would be great

If you used the one-in-all installer you should have been asked during installation what kind of dmd you have in your cabinet. Use it - install to the same place where you already have installed the old version. After that you may do a 10.2.1 update if you find a need for it.

ok thank you I will try that tonight, I was never asked if I had a DMD.  All of the visual pinballs ran silently, I never did anything except download the direct X and followed the prompts to install it.  So should I just reinstall the latest Visual pinball 9.93 instead of the all in one installer?

I believe that your 9.93 is from the the installer. Toxie ( one of the main developers ) have done this new installer. And, if you don't have "crud" as I like to call it - meaning, having *.vbs files laying in tables folder from old installations. There is very little that can go wrong. Well, it exists tables that need those files in weird places. But, the better solution in the long run is not to complain about why these tables don't work correctly after an upgrade and instead fix the "error" done by the author.

This is a community where everyone can submit tables, and thank god for that really. All are not following the "rules" to 100%, and no wonder - the "rules" change over time. So older tables might tell you to install this and that. Don't. Ask around - maybe change a line or two in the script you download instead of getting yourself in trouble down the line.

Eg. Xenonph nice post explaining a workaround recently in this unrelated thread ...

Thank you I am up and running with Pinmame 2.6 and the DMD works great.  Now if I replace my Pinmame with ver. 2.8 or 2.8b I get no DMD found.  Do I need to do anything special when going to the latest version of Pinmame?

Larog88,

Assuming you are using a monitor as a DMD, I had a similar issue when I rebuilt my cab with Windows 10.  For some reason I kept getting no DMD found errors although I had set the Pinmame default to cabinet mode.  When I used the setup function in pinmame, I would see some tables were not defaulted to cab mode.  I then used the setup tool to ensure cab mode was selected and also to resize and position my DMD for various games.

I'm not sure where your problem lies now. But, have you noticed that you have a folder named PinDMD3 inside "Visual Pinball\Pinmame" ? Copy those files and paste them into "Visual Pinball\Pinmame". I believe that should do it for you.

I copied the PinDMD3 to Pinmame folder, didn't help.  I tried the other suggestion of making sure cabinet mode was check in the settings page, no luck there either.  I am thinking starting over on another hard drive from the beginning.  If I use VPinmame 2.6 most of the games work great, I just can't run any of the new games. The good news is I have learned a lot about my cab and how to load games.  This is the best my cab has worked since I got it a year and half ago.  Thank you for the suggestions, I will post when I figure it out.  In the meantime I have a working hard drive with 2.6 and enjoying it very much.

I uninstalled everything and started over again.  This solved the dmd problems and I can now load the latest Pinmame and Stern files.  The games like avengers, dale jr, Indiana jones that would not load before all load now and look great, but avengers and Indiana Jones wont shoot the ball more then 2 inches so I cant play the games yet.  But games like Big Buck, iron man ,Xmen all work fine.  So I am making good progress, any ideas why the balls wont shoot I have about 5 games doing this?

If its a Physmod or PM5 table, you need to make sure you use the Physmod 5 exe and not the regular VP9 exe

or

You have a analog joystick or nudge device connected via USB and the joysitck is not centered so it is constantly nudging the ball.  Try unplugging any unnecessary usb devices

I’m having the same problem as the original poster.

Just installed the latest version and I have also installed the drivers for my pindmd however it will not work in Visual pinball. Mgetting the msg “pindmd not found”. However I can get it to work when in VPinmame test mode. It loads and works.
I have the latest pindmd3 from Virtuapin.
Had it working on my last computer but not on the new one I’ve built.
Pretty sure I had this problem before. Myers I have it checked in the options as external dmd amd also cabinet mode. And also copied the files from pindmd3 directory into VPinmame but no luck.
Can’t remember how I fixed this issue previously as it does seem familiar.
Any help?

A newbie I know... finally got Virtual Pinball working in cabinet mode with a backglass TV and pinDMD3 in Windblows 10 and after a recent Windblows update my pinDMD3 is not recognized in the device manager, giving me … er this guy I know... an error saying ;

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
A request for the USB device descriptor failed.

needless to say this really messed the fruitful tolling that had Virtual Pinball working properly....  at least I think it was

trying to install the usb driver(s) just tells me "nothing to do, best driver already installed."

if anybody has any ideas , I'm open for help... no.. begging for help :)

First of all. If the machine is dedicated to Pinball. Don't run automatic Windows updates !! Especially so if it is Win10.

Since I don't run that myself, this is kind of guessing. Have you tried to roll back that update ?

If that doesn't work. What about safe mode and delete the device ?

Thanks Thalamus, Good advice . I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to try and remove the Windblows update before...so I tried it but it didn’t work :(

Windblows had done the damage and removing the update didn’t help to restore the driver (or clear the error).

I should have turned off the automatic updates because it is a dedicated pinball machine, I tried removing the device in safe mode and rebooting but alas the damage had been done and wasn’t going away.

Device descriptor not found.

This is really a scary one. What I've seen happen not only once is that if you revert to a previous date, if you haven't disabled that feature and yes, I don't know how well it works on win10 then you might have a better chance. Why I say scary is that I've seen numerous times that winblows can decide that *.vpx files needs to be deleted. So, make very sure you have all your tables on backup before doing this. If that doesn't help. Unfortunately, I can't think of any good solution without reverting to disk images or some kind of low level backup. Doesn't sound like you have any.

You might have to re-install - or maybe someone else have better suggestions ?

Do you know what the. VID and PID (vendor id and product id) for pinDMD3. are ?
These are missing in the device manager , would it be advisable to use a program like zadig to force an installation of the USB driver?

Or do I need new firmware for the pinDMD3 , which I would only be able to do by connecting it another computer or through the USB port on the back of the pinDMD3 ?

The DMD shows me : REV-vPin-01013 not sure if this is the firmware ver. or not.

I have a bad feeling that if I reinstall windblows 10 that it won’t solve the problem unless maybe I don’t do any updates at all but it was only the last windblows update that has caused the issue.

I can lookup the VID and PID later on when I get home from work. Never had to use zadig so that is new for me.

New firmware ? No, quite sure you have the firmware the rest of us want. Or is my memory playing tricks on me ? I believe I have 01008. Pretty new - eh ?

I fear your right about your win10 and re-install. Do you run UEFI and Secure-boot ? Any chance to boot the machine on a live linux to get to the windows files ?
