File Name: The Web (Pro Pinball) The_Web VP9.9

File Submitter: mfuegemann

File Submitted: 23 Dec 2015

File Category: VP 9.x Originals

Author(s): mfuegemann
Zany (3D models)
Permission to MOD?: No

This is "The Web" by the Pro Pinball Team, made originally in 1996 as a computer game.

This PC pinball game was my first real simulation at that time. It got me hooked instantly and I remember placing a paper sheet with the main insert texts in front of my monitor, as the screen resolution did not allow readable insert texts on the playfield.
This summer I wrote an e-mail to the Pro Pinball team to ask for their opinion about a Visual Pinball remake of that table. Adrian Barrit replied soon and gave me permission to proceed with the VPin version. Unfortunately he was not able to contribute any material. So I searched the web for "The Web". I found a decent playfield image, I started a redraw with and detailed table rules and strategies by Erik Mooney and Jonas Martinsson.
I still have the game CD, so I recorded the table callouts, the main music and used UltraPeepi's UltraDMD for the DMD display and animations.

Zany created the 3D models and textures of the space ships and some playfield details as Flippers, Bumper caps, Flashers.

PinballWiz45b did a great job testing the table and pointing out several bugs and issues.

The table needs Ultrapeepi's DMD module to run. So please install it first and place the folder "The Web.UltraDMD" in the same directory as the table file.
http://www.vpforums....602&hl=ultradmd

The music tracks must be unzipped and copied to Yout "Visual Pinball\Music" folder.

If You have a previous version, please replace the folder "The Web.UltraDMD", as quit a lot new animations have been added.

Thanks again to Adrian Barritt for his permission to proceed.

Have fun and please use the support topic to post any findings and suggestions
Michael

One remark: please do not enable the Ball rolling sound at the moment. This will be included in version 1.0

Help!----I downloaded the UltraDMD . Not sure if I donwloaded everything I need. I have a folder called TheWeb,UltraDMD which I placed in the Tables folder (everything left IN the folder)--and I have the UltraDMD.exe which I placed in the tables folder. When I clik on the exe it gives me the error message that it has to close--encountered a problem blah blah. What am I missing ? I'm really anxious to get this up an running. Big fan of Pro Pinball. Thanks

I meant to post this in the cabinet part---not the desktop

After playing this for one game: Great work!

Issues that I've noticed:

  • Many animations are not in yet. Are they going to be included in later builds?
  • If you get a High Score, play the Fast Frenzy music instead.
  • If you have the 2nd ball Docked, have the Main Play music play the one in the Attract Mode instead.
  • Video Mode is too slow. Should keep speeding up every time you collect one of those Energy objects.
  • Ball Save time for Space Station Frenzy is too short.
  • Space Station Frenzy: The red inlane needs to be turned off. Can't lock balls for the next Space Station Frenzy ;)
  • Space Station Frenzy: Any event lights other than the Jackpot (or extra ball) at the center scoop need to be turned off. They should be returned to their normal states when multiball ends.
  • Lighting Super Jets: Should be hitting that rollover first, followed by a Jet bumper hit. Also: the ball is going through the area when that shot is made.
  • Explosion: Should play the animation first. When that finishes, the award should follow.
  • Combos: The first combo voice clip should be reversed.
  • Combo Mania: Subsequent Combos give compliments, such as "Outstanding!", "Superb!", "Nice one!", etc.
  • I'll have to check the ruling on Super Launcher. Is it 5 shots to the Upper Ramp for completion?
  • Reactor Core's timer should be on 50.
  • Docking balls: The ball orbiting the planet should be the first animation when it goes on the ramp. Actually Docking a ball starts a new animation, showing the dock in progress.
  • After Video Mode ends, go directly to Lock (options/Lock/Fast Frenzy if all balls are locked) if it is lit.
  • Every side ramp shot increases the Jackpot by 1 million, no matter what. It doesn't disable at any time, even during Space Station Frenzy.

I'll add others when I can come up with them.

EDIT: Found something that might be of use:

From what I understand, UltraDMD runs with XDMD...check here..http://www.vpforums....showtopic=25800

"UltraDMD is an ActiveX control that is built around XDMD.  Most of the rocket science is in XDMD."

UltraDMD redistributable consists of a single file UltraDMD.exe.  But it does rely on functionality provided by XDMD.

Table authors will also want the UltraDMD Scene Builder.  It provides an easy way to preview scenes, transitions, and animations.  The script builder feature will provide Visual Basic code which can be copy-pasted into a Visual Pinball table script, reducing the amount of actual coding necessary to incorporate your DMD scenes.

Installation (minimal install)

  • First, if you are running Windows XP, you will need .Net 2.0
  • Install XDMD from XDMD.info (Beta 0.3 or later).
  • Download UltraDMD.exe and place it in the same folder as XDMD (XDMD.dll).
  • Open a command window with administrator privilege.
  • Change directories to the folder with UltraDMD.exe.
  • Run

Info found here..https://ultradmd.wor.../documentation/

Hope this helps.

Hi Pinballwiz,

Your remarks are most welcome. I will try to implement the fixes in version 1.0.

For the video mode, I had the same impression but I used the current setting for a start. The speed is increasing both after each atom and for the next video mode. I will increase the counters. I also will include fewer lifes for the later video modes.

Capturing the animations is quite a bit of work, so not all of the animations will be implemented. In addition it is sometimes hard to decide to which animation I have to come back when an "on top" animation ends. So I try to keep those parallel animations to a minimum.

Last time I had the XDMD program working was for an original Tron table and was probably over 6 years ago. Not even sure if that Tron table is available anymore. But after seeing this table I feel the need to try and get it working again!!

This Table looks great!!!

Thanks for all the hard work put into this!!

Wow, this is so cool!

Thank you very much for this table! Love how it even has the proper insert lettering that the original only showed on the still-image gallery :-)

Also a big thanks to Ade for allowing this to happen!

Hi,

I just uploaded a small fix. I forgot to remove the Super Launcher activation on GameStart. This was still in there from the final tests. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Help. I'm stuck. I've downloaded the table and followed instructions to the letter. I downloaded the B2S backglass and placed it in the tables folder. The table fires up,..... action, sounds, but no DMD of any kind. Backglass settings are Grill: standard, DMD: Standard, B2SDMD: Visible. (Actually, I've tried all combos without success). I'm running VP9.90, Admin privileges and compatibility set as directed. What am I missing?

Hi Greynurse,

did You install UltraDMD? The DMD animations need this program.

I've solved it. I hadn't registered ultradmd.exe. Have done so and now The Web is playing beautifully. It also solved a similar problem I had with America's Most Haunted. Thanks for your fast reply all the same, Michael. Now I can go back to having some fun!
