I recently finished a project in 3DSmax ans am curious if i can get the same level of detail in FP. I have a video posted of the work here.

I decided to model a Firepower because i used to own one i did a restoration on it so i was very familiar with the game. This was the first pinball machine i have completely modeled and hope i can use this as a good foundation for future table of the same era(and cabinet)   :). Anyway just wanted to introduce myself and share some interests hope you like. I am also a Pinsider a great community. I have a link to my progress in the creation of this bad boy here:

looks great,  but i think you will want unit3d pinball instead of FP, to be able to use all of your work. It has a much more modern 3d engine, and less limitations on your 3d models. For the moment however, it is more complicated to use.

I'll try that. This was more for fun then anything. I couldn't imagine for a second actually playing it. My head might explode.

nice video! I always love those wireframe overlay shots :-)

I had been working on a Firepower recreation for FP many years ago for test purposes and while it certainly did not look as nice as your renders it is possible to get something that at a first quick glance might look somewhat close to it but it will of course not stand a close side-by-side comparision. Tables with a fairly simple single-layer layout work best for that in my opinion - if you create the plastics in a way that have the "print" below the actual plastic and apply a good looking sphere mp to the translucent plastic above it can look quite convincing.

You could put those skills to work modelling 3D objects for use in VP tables! Guys like Dark and Zany are literally changing the game by providing renderings of game-specific toys as well as generic posts and hardware models.

Really awesome work pal, the lighting and reflections are what really make it, once you have the entire table modeled and assembled like that the raytrace reflections work beautiful eye candy magic.  I often struggle to get convincing lighting for individual objects I make for VP tables without exterior sources for reflections and ambient light.  Unity3D is still in alpha stages but I'm sure they could make use of your build in some form or another.  In VP there's no real lighting as of yet so we are usually faking it with texture baking.  There's no shortage of work to be done and by the looks of it you could bring some talent to the 'table'.

I'm going to take a guess based off the ball lights/reflections and say you utilized HDRI lighting for this?

Hey I saw what you were talking about with a VP Version of your fireball, I know what you're trying to do. That's not technically how we build tables, though it's similar to what has been done in the past. Does the way to render an angle of an image allow for transparency?

You'd want to export just the playfield image, without the stuff on top of it, then you'd want to render everything else without the playfield below them, in its place a transparent background. Is that possible? You'd also want to leave out all the animated stuff, like targets, flippers, slingshots, as we can animate those in vp..........

let me know if you're interested in making it playable in vp the way you want, I'd love to try.

And to go with that, if you wanted to do something in FP or VP using the actual 3d objects, it's going to be tedious. Each piece needs to be 1 texture. So you'd export the posts, and they'd have to be 1 texture, the rubbers, 1 texture....so you could end up with hundreds of textures for hundreds of objects. Both options are possible.

@3rdaxis: If you feel like it, please make the 3D objects available here in the download section, so that others could re-use them in VP or FP table builds. The amount of detail you have there is very cool and will be very useful especially in future versions of VP.

please make the 3D objects available here in the download section... I'll consider it but i am not sure how that would work seeing that i sell these models on Turbosquid.

@ fren.. that was my thought then this came to mind.

@3d ..Yeah, that is nice advertising for yourself then. It looks good but I like the free community aspects ... even though most authors here deserve to be paid for their time and efforts they willingly share them for free. Good luck and nice video.

I don't really think my models would apply to VP or FP because of the high poly count, a post by itself is 3664 polygon faces but you are more then welcome to try if you want.

I merely thought i could do a pre-rendered version for VP or FP with my models. To use the mesh's would probably be to taxing.

VP supports static and dynamic meshes. Static primitives can have a couple of thousands polygons but they will be just rendered once and you can't do any dynamic lighting or texture changes on them. These primitives are usefull for static non animated toys or posts ;) Dynamic primitives are rendered every frame but could have a lot of polys too. The only limitation is your hardware and the amount of dynamic elements on a table and ofcourse the limitation of DX9 ;)

On the main page take a look on the left "Site Navigation" and click on "Downloads" then on "VP Development Resources" on the right upper side there is a button "Upload File" and then follow the instructions...
