Well I picked up this stand-up Sega Outrun cab a few weeks back for $50.00.  I've wanted to build a small driving emulator cab for a while and couldn't pass up the Outrun cab for that price.  I haven't even cleaned up the cab as of yet, just removed the CRT monitor, PCB, transformers, etc..  Well tonight I decided to see if I could make a shifter from a Sega Scud Race (Ketz 4 speed with resting neutral) and here is the result.  The mounting holes for the Ketz shifter actually line up with the holes for the riser mounts that held the old Hi-Lo shifter.  I had to cut out the control panel a bit and trim about .75" from the steel mounting plate for the steering wheel assembly.

I'll make some sort of bezel to go over the shifter and flush over the trimmed control panel bezel this weekend.  I'm also going to cut down the main cabinet so it's about half as deep.  Too much wasted depth with an LCD monitor and I'd rather it take up less floor space.

Here's some starting pics :)

Ok well I'm done for today.  I managed to get the cab's depth cut down to a reasonable size and got the monitor area modified to accept a 24" LCD with a snug fit.  I still need to get a back on the cab (going to use some lighter material instead of reusing the existing door and panels to keep the weight down) and sand/fill/paint.

I happen to have an extra haswell i7-4770 processor and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM for this guy.  just need a motherboard.  Already have an a-pac as well to interface the steering wheel and pedal pots as well as the shifter.  Should be a fun toy when it's done!

Quick update - managed to squeeze in some more work on the driving cab last night and got the steering wheel and pedal pots wired up to the A-pac and got the computer installed in the machine (four speed shifter not wired up yet).  I'm really shocked to report that both the Sega Model 2 emulator and Supermodel3 (Sega Model 3 emulator) run GREAT with just integrated Intel graphics on my i7-4770 Haswel processor.  It's crappy Intel 4600 graphics.  It's not just playable, it works GREAT.  Buttery smooth.  I'm still going to install a dedicated graphics card as I want to install a few PC driving games as well but I figured I would share that expirience... not what I was expecting.

Gonna try the PC version of Outrun 2 Coast to Coast on the integrated graphics tonight for shits & giggles.

Actually I did recently learn about that on another forum and I'm definitely going to install that tonight!! I owe it to the history of the cab to actually have Outrun installed :dblthumb:   I'm going to check that out as well.  For this cab I'm not going to fall into the trap I've fallen into with other MAME cabs.... that is painstakingly downloading every available useless ROM just because I can.  For this, only hand-picked good driving games..... and of course, light-gun games to use with my new Aimtrack lightgun I should receive tomorrow :)  Lots of late nights of gaming ahead :)

Yes...have a look at it. I have it, but never tried with my FF wheel.
True...many wants everything, but since thisone is a dedicated driving can(and lightgun), hand picked games is the best.
I will buy a Aimtrak aswell.....and use it on my Mame cab, but also on the backglass of the my pincap that i'm building at the moment. Using it on the back glass gives you the perfect distance.
For calibrating your gun....this may be helpful...start looking at 4:20. Ok this is Arcadeguns, but they are the same, just different casing.

Damn I don't know why I didn't think of the lightgun for use on pincab backglass screen!!  That's a great idea and definitely a good upgrade for a pincab.  You make a good point about the distance.  I'm sure the airmtrack has a minimum distance that it needs to be back from the monitor.  I'll make a good video once I get it all setup this weekend.  I have obtained a chip (HD74LS138P) that when wired to the three microswitches of the 4 speed shifter, it gives a separate output for each gear including neutral so that is what I will be working on tonight most likely.

I've also seen some posts around various forums where people use the internal parts of an aimtrack in an actual arcade gun housing which looked pretty cool.  I also saw this custom "steam punk" gun which you have to be super-nerdy to appreciate most lilkely :)

Here is the steampunk nerf gun that could be modded to hold the aimtrack:

Looks awesome! I've been thinking about a lightgun too for my little MAME setup but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Wow guys, I'm very stoked about this thread.  These are two types of controllers  (Driving and light guns ) that I have always wanted but never tried. Especially the Light Gun as those were always my favorite arcade games and every home system I ever bought I got the gun and all gun game for it. Including NES, Amiga, Dreamcast, PlayStation, and PlayStation move.

I've got a working Lethal Enforcers cab, plus dead LE 2 and Judged Dredd boards, would love to get a working gun game cab going with all the shooters available. :lusty:

Unfortunately I have been out of the MAME update and build loop since about 98' so I might have to hit someone up for some advise and pointers.

I wasted a few quarters on Outrun. :D

I modded the AimTrack mod kit into a real housing + original coil of a Namco gun. Super sweet! :D

Though it alwas fires the solenoid when point and trigger on the screen even if you don't have ammo in the game it think it's worth the effect of a working recoil.
(Also, no automatic function build in either!)

....and yes, it's really a shower cord  :dblthumb:

Received the aimtrack lightgun today!!  Pretty nice size and feel to it.  Can't wait to get home and try this bad-boy out.  stupid work is cutting into my playing time :)

I may have made the wrong choice with the Ultimarc A-pac.  It shows up as two different joysticks to the PC and some games do not allow that in the settings (as far as picking one axis from one joystick and another axis from another joystick).  Although the PC version of Outrun 2 Coast to Coast plays sooo good, I can't set it up with my stupid A-pac.  I'm researching an option called the U-HID to see if it can fit my needs.  Will report back.

Haha shadow, my last actual mame cab build was in '04 so I'm with ya.  I can share my settings once I get it all setup and looking pretty with hyperspin ;)

Cool!!  I like the shower cord... that's my kind of re-use!  How are you attaching that cord to the actual cab?  And on your gun, did you have to work with some funky voltages for the stock namco solenoid?  I would probably just find a similar 12v solenoid if I do that.... and I probably will do that now :)  I wonder if I can just use the "guts" of my gun to do what you did or if it's different components than the aimtrack "kit".  Need to crack mine open and have a look at its guts

hehe! Yes, i thought I should go as arcade like that I could. Have not yet finished the attatching part as of yet, just used black duch tape to teh gun and the other ends up free atm.

Just want to say that cutting the USB cord and thread that and the 24v cables in to that mother was a real pain (had the inner tube intact)

If I remeber the NAMCO should have 36V or something, but I have a 24V power supply. Have a link to a ebay solenoid which someone at the BYOAC forums linkt me some time ago. (not at home atm)

the components is the same, you just buy the Recoil Kit from Ultimarc. You will recieve a solenoid as well, but it's a bit weaker than the Namcos.

You should try it though. Guess it would be a little more work to have the actual gun top move with the solenoid though, but I don't see why it could'nt be done if cut along the profile and with a use of some slinding parts attatched :console:
