Hi - the SourceForge page says this is the best place to contact the VPM developers.  I've made some modest tweaks to the VPM code to allow setting the colors for the four DMD intensity levels independently - this lets you achieve a simple colorization effect.  I'm hoping to get the changes integrated into the main code repository - I think they're fairly simple, low-risk, and low-maintenance.  The main modifications are (1) the code in wpc/core.c that initializes the color palette uses some additional option settings to set up the intensity level palette entries directly rather than computing shades of the 100% color, and (2) new features in the options dialog to provide a UI to switch between the standard monochrome (shaded) mode and the colorized mode, and to select the individual colors for the colorized mode.

I based my changes on the r3530 snapshot from the cabinet branch of the SourceForge repository. If anyone wants to look at the code, I posted the changed files here:  https://www.dropbox....md-20140427.zip.  The individual changed/added lines are marked with "// mjr" comments.

If this isn't actually the right place to communicate this kind of request, I'd appreciate any pointers to the right place to go.

I'll look into your changes (hopefully) soon and add them to one of the branches.. I'm currently a bit busy, so could take a while though.. :/

Thanks!  No hurry at all, just wanted to make this available to the community.  Let me know if there are any code changes you want me to make when you have a chance to review it (I'll try to monitor this thread, or you can just PM me if you prefer).

Most of the discussion surrounding this modification is hidden in a hijacked  thread on the cabinet forum dealing with LCD panels, but this adds a feature that is useful to anyone who uses VPinMAME, cabinet or desktop. It basically converts the DMD output to something akin to ColorDMD by allowing separate custom color definitions for each shade.

Some examples begin here:

mjr kindly attached a beta executable in the same thread. Check it out.

Why only the cabinet branch?

Surely this has as much if not more so application to the forgotten desktop branch?

Files I have uploaded here...

look into the VPM alpha/beta thread, there you can download a fully 'combined' version already..

actually mjr was spot on with using the cabinet branch, as this will be easiest for me to backmerge later-on..

Yep, the beta definitely works for desktop tables. Thanks for the great addition.
