I want to try and make an original unit3d Pinball machine. I know all the tools aren't in place just yet but I want to get started.

Where should I start? Should I begin with the Future Pinball editor or Visual Pinball editor?

Does anyone have any good links to reference material so I can learn what's involved in making a table?

I already have a theme in mind. Part of my theme idea will have the playfield, plastics and backglass art change when the game enters different modes, For example, imagine a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde pinball where you start as Dr. Jekyll and when you reach the point where you turn into Mr. Hyde, the theme of the game changes, but all the geometry stays the same. Is this possible?

Thanks!

Hi! great to hear that you want to contribute and make a new table!

Well, you can already start looking at scripts in tables. I hope you know a bit of c# because you will need it ;).

To really begin scripting your table, wait for the next release: I made an "orginial table" script for Abra Ca Dabra and greatly improved the C# API for that (all basics mecanisms, like tilts, scores, players, etc...).

But you cna already start by making your table using teh FP editor.

If I understand what you want to do, you need to create two sets of textures for your 3D objects, am I right?

Later, by script, you will be able to change the lighting and textures in realtime to swap between "moods"...

You'll be able to do a lot of things supported by Unity!

Good luck, and post your work in WIP section ;).

Cheers!

not only can one switch out a theme but you can also make the entire play field different

with stuff put into collections then you just drop the entire collection of objects

to create a whole new play field like I tried to do with my Rocky Horror Picture Show pin

that one uses walls in collections to come up and drop with certain events

as well as flippers that change out with the various tables too

How could you miss the opportunity to call it the Rocky Horror Pinball Show?  ;)

So will all FP tables be converted to Unit3D? I would like to see a "getting started" on that. I want to have a go at making or converting a table but I have to problem too that all information seems to be fragmented all over the place, and if you have not followed this thing over the last year it's pretty hard to find all the information.

So will all FP tables be converted to Unit3D?

There is a fair amount of work to convert an already made table. Most notable is the fact 90% of tables are incorrect sizes, so starting tables from scratch makes more sense.

Start a build and when you get stuck with script just ask.

Can you explain how this is a problem? I mean when they have an incorrect size in FP and are playable , why do you want them to have a correct size in Unit3D?  I mean most playfields are wrong because a screen has a different size then a playfield, how do you want to correct such a thing?

You could make a 10" x 3" table, stick a play-field in and it would be playable. It's not specific to Unit3D, I'm just saying if you're going to start "converting", check the sizes out and if they're out I would recommend just making from scratch.

If 'x' playfield is supposed to translate 46" long & and it's made at 44.6".  Width is supposed to be 20" but made 18.75". Do you not see problems?

If you look around you'll see dimensions for all playfields. If you open Visual Pinball and go to dimensions they're also there for reference. There really is no excuse not to do it.

how do you want to correct such a thing?

I wouldn't bother , I would start from scratch because it's going to take you the same amount of time than it would correcting the table.

Create a new table but also load up the one you'd like to convert. There's a lot of std stuff you could copy/paste over here & resize/move into place. This way when you start from a clean table you leave out all the unnecessary assets you don't need. (dmd/imagelists/sounds/music) - Will make your job faster loading in Unit3D for testing.

Models/objects can be resized inside of Unit3D, so wouldn't worry too much there.

After you finished doing the above and you don't need to add anymore objects to the table, push play with FP, quit back to editor and then go through and delete unused on anything you can, will also improve loading times for testing.

OK i understand what you mean, you want to start over with a playfield that has the correct dimensions and resize items accordingly. But what i mean is , what is the correct size? It Will never fit exactly on a tv screen because a playfield has a different aspect ratio. So there is always problem with it too small or too big.....?

Well , you can actually have real size in the cabinet view but if TV's too small you'd never play it like that.

So there is always problem with it too small or too big.....?

The views not a problem when it comes down to playing it, desktop or cabinet. It's not like you would say "yeah, that inserts 28mm".

Just putting it out there for you or anyone that is going to start converting already made FP tables, get the dimensions correct before you start.
