So, since Unit3D is so awesome, I'm building a cabinet for it. It was going to be a mini, and I still might build one, but I'm picking this up this weekend for $100, as you see it. No legs, no Backboard.

Here's my question.

i see some people use a 3rd monitor for the DMD. In Unit3D, the DMD is part of the backglass graphics. If I was to use a 3rd monitor, where do the indicators like RANSOM in BK2000 and THING in Adams Family go? Will I still be able to see them if I go with a 3rd monitor for the DMD?

Thanks!

3rd screen seems to be quite common in cab owner and used a lot under VP.

Currently, we have limitations in UP: there is only one render window. We cheat by scaling this render window across all the desktops and adding 2 virtual windows.

Virtual windows (that you see in cabinet mode) are currently in the number of 2: Playfield and Backglass. These are easily extendable and had been though to be limitless and user customizable: in future releases,we planned to give full control about it. The user would then be able to set a dedicated window for the dmd, another for the backglass, and why not a fourth for specific tables like thing in TAF or ransom in BK2K.

But of course, there is MAJOR drawback: performances. If your PC is strong enough, maybe this will be doable. In the meantime, I am talking with hervew to include B2S server in UP: this will dispatch drawings accross multiple cpu/gpu, but, IMO, not as good looking (just my opinion and it largely depends on backglass designs).

So, to be short: it WILL be possible in UP in different manners. But if I where to build a real size cab, I think I'd go for a real DMD, driven by pindmd (now beta supported directly in VPM).

Up to you ;). And thanks for supporting UP :).

Hope you can easily make the 2nd screen fullscreen without grill for pindmd users, no need for a third screen or whatever :)

+1

But presumably if B2S integration occurs as mentioned above this will be a moot issue?

I don't think I'll be going for a real DMD, All the used machines that have them are to expensive to tear apart. I like the DMD in Unity Pinball (PinMame?) so I'll likely use that and I think I can change the color of it for each game. I'm still new to this so some of what you said went over my head but I get the general idea. And I'm unwilling to go without my RANSOM :D

Are there DMD "clones"?

I looked through like 1000 pics on google and discovered that I'm getting an Aztec by Williams for the donor cabinet (it was hard to tell from that 1 picture unless you know the playfield). I'm going to pic it up this week, already paid for it.

Anyone know of any builds that use this cabinet or similar?

Anyone know if it's the same cabinet size as black knight 2000?

Thanks for the responses.

Hint: you don't have to gut a machine to get a real DMD.  For instance, the company that hosts this forum (VirtuaPin) sells brand new DMDs and the other required parts (power supply and PinDMD interface)...

I'm really sorry, I ended up here by a UNIT3D video that was posted on a newsgroup, I didn't know it was a company forum. I'll be sure to check out the products and support VirtuaPin as best as I can.

I have a question about force feedback. I was thinking about taking some of the bumpers, flippers and other components off the playfield and mounting them inside the cabinet to get the 'feel' of a real pinball machine, is it possible to activate these components from the game ROM somehow?

Thanks

No apology needed.  We all started as noobs...  :)

Force feedback is definintely an option.  I have it on my cabinet and it is fantastic.  However, you're starting to venture into areas that really are beyond the intended scope of this particular forum section (Unit3D).  My suggestion would be for you to go the the 'Virtual Pinball Cabinets' section, where all of these type questions have been and can be answered.

Indeed, go to dedicated sections. But be sure that forcefeedback will be (is here) available for UP.

As I am building a cab, I also can tell you to use contactors instead or real pinball parts, because, in the end, it will be cheaper ;).

Good luck!

I have a question also. I have a two monitor set up where only enough of the top of the second monitor is visible to show a dmd. I would like to raise the backglass way above off screen so the DMD portion shows here. What's the easiest way to do this?

U can set the b2s resolution in screenresolution.txt file under the tables folder.
Try to lower the y hight so u have space left to place the dmd unders the backglass file.
I think should work

I was asking in regards to unit3d. It doesn't use b2s right?

Not yet. Moreover, il will be quite hard to integrate it in next release...
