Just curious what people prefer - classic DMD style display or a full color LCD.

full LCD can be good or bad based on how they pull if off. You don't want the LCD to over take the game play.

And DMD art is cool a big display kind of takes that away.

personally, I don't care about the display. You don't really see it, until you want to see your objective or what your score currently is. Other than that, who cares. What I want to see if reinvented pinball that you actually interact with on the field. not rehashed crap we've seen for the past 20 years, moved around. Lets see something really new.

You should have specified 'full backbox LCD' - I think the world can afford the extra $400 for a full color DMD and it reminds you that you're playing a pinball game due to the limited colors and limited size, but a full backbox LCD screen sucks IMO and makes you think you're watching a movie or TV or playing a video game - which is going the wrong direction. Manufacturers should want people to play their new game, have a lot of fun with it, and then seek out their other offerings - not steer them out of the pinball market and into the arcade/video console junk. Full backbox LCD screens push them towards other forms of pinball - like virtual pinball machines (hint), or Playstation Pinball translations, rather than their core 'real pinball market' for sales.
Another good question would be, what do you think about having credit cards used for credit purchases in pinball machines? It doesn't prompt you for a PIN code, and then their marketeers can track where you played, how long you played, what you played, and if you were any good or not. It's market research at the point of sale position - who knows what other data they will get from you like the video camera in the establishment for racial profiling or what.

Don't PinCab users use LCD to display DMD? For a real table I'd go with old fashioned DMD but for video game pinball it's full color 'LCD' all the way.

Pincab users traditionally used LCD's only to mimic DMDs - but now that the converter board is available a lot of users are utilizing real DMDs to match the real experience better.

This poll was more intended to get reactions from the community on the preference of a dot matrix style display in a small format as compared to a larger, full color display capable of quality video renderings (analagous to the WOZ machine).

It's interesting the split between people... Personally I'm torn, I can't decide what I like better, I think I'll have to try a WOZ first before I make a call on that one. I did like what Jersey Jack had to say about the video screen - it's not so much as a tool for the person playing the machine, but it's really a strong visual for those waiting to play. Could make it more interesting to stand next to a machine as your buddy plays, espeically if they are good players like my friends that can take a few minutes on each ball...

I disagree that it matches the DMD experience better. I own real games and have the VP cab. And personally, I don't really notice a difference. Only on the electric bill, since it cost considerably less to run the 17" monitor than it does a 180 V display. Unless they are running it similar to gottlieb system 3's, then it would be 60VDC. Either way, it's a lot more than the 5V it takes to fire up a LED display.

Actually on second thought a 7 to 10 inch IPS type display as used on tablets I feel would be a better choice as it would still allow for a full back glass art and possible toys. Also it would much cheaper and availability would be no issue either, best of both worlds really.

and as someone said, the lcd cannot replace the gameplay. just to show cool animations and a cool way to show the scores.

i grew up with the original dmds i LOVE them, love the amount of skill that goes into creating that style of artwork i think it takes far more skill to create original dmd artwork then all the new 3d stuff.

original DMDs is what makes a pinball a pinball!!! what nice warm orange glow with the simple few shades of colour with my cool animations and dmd transition, nothing beats that!!!

Well when I was younger I recall thinking what is this DMD crap and mini video games on a pinball, what a waste of money the old solid state segmented displays were all that was needed, change is the only certainty.

I am confused by your post. Monitors are taking in 120 volts and the current LED DMD's run off 5 volts. In many cases, I believe the new DMD's use the USB for power.

I'm also not sure why anyone is worried about that when 800 watt power supplies and two-three monitor set ups are sucking down the juice.

it is very easy to create art for something like the dmd. but still, Stern is just throwing video footage of the movies into the dmd! it looks horrible.
the way the dmd is being used by pin manufactures i see no reason why we should continue with the dmd...

i miss the 90's dmd animations. art made specially for it.. and it worked.

anyway i say lets move forward.. go LCD!
