I'm planning on taking a newer style Williams shuffle cabinet (Strike Master) and gutting it, except for the pins/lights and playfield (switches), replace the electronics with a PC/VP/PBX and the scoreboard with an LED TV; in an effort to maintain authentic play, but also allow multiple games/tables on a single machine, while improving reliability and lowering maintenance hours and cost.

Been playing with the Hybrid Strike Master table and script (by Rascal), artwork is great and project looks like these old VP9 tables could pull it off with a little updating. Really only need the scoreboard portion, but the original table contains the pins and lights on the pin drawer, but am able to just resize them out.

Since it's a low end table, processing power wise, would be great if a Raspberry Pi could be used, anyone know of VP9 on Pi?

I know these tables are odd balls (not pins and partially real), but why not load them up in the library for tracking?

The plan is to use PBX frontend to eventually select between a dozen+ shuffle tables.

INPUTS - Initial estimations looks like I'll need 44 inputs from the game itself (28 just for playfield rollover switches), there is another 24 standard VP and PBX inputs that just won't be needed (or can be accessed via keyboard for maintenance) and another 8 that can just be used from a BT keyboard (F keys for Pinmame a High Score Reset that I may not want accessible to users) that will stored in cab.

OUTPUTS - Looking like 11 high amp outputs (Pins and Reset Motor) and another 27 min for low amp circuits like the playfield and marquee lights (during flash game mode) and start and select buttons, so need 38 min, might add more leds or button lights on later.

To pull this off and have a little expansion room, I ordered the below:

2 x LED-Wiz 32-port USB (LEDWIZ01) = $48.90
Dev1 & Dev2 w/Pre-Installed Heatsinks

1 x KeyWiz USB Max (KWUSBM10) = $54.95
Screw Terminals and no wires

1 x SainSmart 16-Channel 9-36V USB Relay Module = $39.99

1 x 16 Channel 12V Relay Module Board = $15.99 ebay

2 x Custom 6 Channel 12V Custom PCB Solid State Output Driver Boards (Rev 4)

1 x 5pcs Arcade LED Push Button 12V illuminated Chrome Plated = $11.00 ebay

1 x Continu.us 28” LED HDTV CT-2860 = $150 Marketplace (Open Box)

1 x Sunbeam Advance 7 Outlet Power Strip with Surge Protector & Spaced Outlet 15A = $7.17 Amazon

Plan on using an old free PC with BT keyboard, don't need much cause only really outputting a scoreboard screen and running the rom, will figure out an LED screen size when I find a cabinet. Would love to knock this down to a Raspberry Pi.

*Note - Later learned the SainSmart 16-Channel 9-36V USB Relay Modules are not compatiable with DOF, thus swapped plans over to the SainSmart 16 Channel 12V Relay Module Board which will be controled by another LED-Wiz.

#Note - Later upgraded to two 6 channel custom solid state output driver boards, based off the original factory schematics and a few upgrades, see more info in the 11/30/2022 post.

Got LED-Wiz and KeyWiz easily configed to DOF with the DOF install program, could not get to load manually via many youtube videos and web info, to much crazy stuff to do, found a setup tool (DirectOutput-mjr-20210416) and it simply justed worked, was able to configure as needed via the DOF Config Tool site, dump files from the tool to the DOF config folder and all worked, tested via LED-Wiz with some LEDs on a breadboard.

A day later added the SainSmart 16-Channel USB Relay Module only to find out they are not good with DOF, only the 8-Channel SainSmart boards work with DOF, so decided to switch to another LED-Wiz cause they just auto configure and add a 16 Channel 12V Relay Module Board to control the Pins Solenoids (48VDC) and Pin Reset Motor (20VDC Control, 48VAC  Powered motor), need a total of 11 high voltage outputs.

Plan is to use the factory Williams transformer, using the 48 and 20 VAC sections of it.  The original power supply to create the 48 and 20 VDC was generated in the original Power Driver Board, but since these are expensive, hard to find and not really needed, I decided to build my own rectifer using the original Williams specs from the schematic and build list.  Built a prototype rectifier to test the theory and all worked good.  Will mount of both rectifiers on a PCB with factory header connectors that match up to the power from the transformer adapter cable plug and the output will supply all needed voltage signals to the Pin Drawer disconnect plug.  Will add some LEDs for easy troubleshooting and a few upgraded parts that should make it easy with no factory wiring changes, just plug Dual Rectifier Board to factory plugs and you can ready to use the pins and reset motor, just need to supply grounds from the 16 CH Relay Board via control of the LED-Wiz.

Dual Rectifier Parts List (Marco & The Pinball Wizard):
1 - Capacitor 100 uf 200V radial - $2.09
1 - Capacitor 15,000 uf 35V radial - $2.95
2 - Bridge Rectifier KBPC3504W 35 Amp 400 Volt or upgraded KBPC3506W - $3.25 ea
1 - Connector 0.156" (3.96mm) Locking Header 7 PIN PCB Mount - $0.55
1 - Connector 0.156" (3.96mm) Locking Header 9 PIN PCB Mount - $0.70
10 - Fuse Clip PCB mount 1/4 inch AGC - $.29 ea
2 - FUSE - SLOW BLOW 5 amp (6.3mm x 32mm)
3 - FUSE - SLOW BLOW 3 amp (6.3mm x 32mm)
2 - Resistor - 10K ohms 1/2 watt 5 watt (Later noted on a thermal cam the original factory spec ran hot, upgraded to a higher wattage)
1 - Resistor - 22-30K ohms 1/2 watt 5 watt (Later noted on a thermal cam the original factory spec ran hot, upgraded to a higher wattage)
2 - Green LED's

Hybrid Shuffle Bowling Alley Project - Proto-Type Rectifier Board

Was hoping to replace the bulbs above the pins with LEDs, but no luck finding any 15" T8's, but if you need to replace them, these fit:
Update - I have located an LED replacement that will eliminate the starter and ballast - https://www.amazon.c...F9G3408VZ&psc=1

Update - Pin Drawer all cleaned up and got parts in and built the full dual rectifier board, works perfect, can drop and reset pins by just grounding the pins at the pin drawer connector, this setup is assuming you have the factory Transformer and Pin Motor Triac PCB controler, nice plug and play option.

Thermal of Hot 1/2 Watt Resistors, note they are upgraded to 5 watt now.

Started mapping standard VP/VPX/VPMAME/PBX reserved keys to see what's left for inputs, since I'll need a lot more than the normal table.  I'm trying to to overlap standard keys and use stadard keys where they apply.

Finished up a modular input/output/rectifier board that can be easily removed.

Hybrid Shuffle Bowling Alley Project - Input/Output/Rectifier

Then moved on to the second test of using Visual Pinball (VP) and DOF to control a Williams Strike Master via a Win10 PC.  This is a full 10 Pin Drop Test and full Pin Reset using the actual game rom test utility, followed by a Strike during game play.

This was after some small setbacks from using an old pc power supply for the 12vdc, apparently the built-in protection of a pc power supply is too sensitive for the spike of firing the pins, it kept cutting over after a few pins, installed a regular 12vdc 25A power supply and was good.

Finished up the playfield (rewiring of switches), factory wiring is for a switch matrix logic, will not work with a standard game/keyboard input controler because each switch must me wired individually to ground/return.

Must thank Rascal and Wildman again for original Hybrid Strike Master table and script, artwork is great and project looks like these old VP9 tables pulled it off with a little updating.

Really only need the scoreboard portion, but the original table contains the pins and lights on the pin drawer, but am able to just resize them out at a later time after testing is complete.  Just need to cleanup the installation and get a tv/monitor to fit the cabinet and connect wiring to the lamps and LEDWiz.

Finished up the Playfield and Pin Hood Lightning (rewiring of lights), factory wiring is for a light matrix logic, will not work with a standard game output controller because each switch must me wired individually with common ground to all.  Thus, need to remove or jumper out diodes to get back to standard series type circuitry.  The Pin Hood did require 3 holes to be drilled to thru a few circuit runs to break the circuits up to be able to use the factory header pins. Also, had to add 5 wires to Pin Hood and 1 to the Playfield to complete the conversion.

The factory plugs are pretty much reuseable/reconfigurable, but require a insertion punch tool that's well over $40. Made an easy workaround for free from installing a 1/8" bit in a new lead pencil. Simply drill the bit halfway into the new flat end of the pencil where the lead is and then leave bit installed and remove from drill. With a punch in the center of pin and one on each side, you should get a good wire insertion.

Here's the Test 4 Video link (Sorry, got my head in the way...)

https://youtu.be/3-q8jgl0xmQ

Video goes from full Windows boot up, thru PinballX menus, game play (Visual Pinball w/DOF), built in systems testing (via Game ROM) to a full shutdown.

Just need to cleanup wiring, mount tv screen and prob going to move input/output cards to top cab with pc and screen.

Currently having an issue with DirectOutputTest (RESOLVED - LINK BELOW) not being able to run, would like to run a batch file just prior to shutdown to pop all the pins up for storage, got a seperate thread about this discussion, appreciate any ideas...

UPDATED:  Issue with DirectOutputTest resolved, initially was trying to use LEDBlinky as a workaround for DOF failing, but it was even worse.  DOF Test Utility updated, can now have PBX have DOF run a full Lights Test on PBX startup and PBX commands DOF to to send all the pins up/stowed on exit/shutdown...

Project status, still need to add a few wires to the coin door/box and then cleanup the electrical install and mount PC and TV in cab.

All set on base cabinet rewiring, fully functional and authentic with Rascal's older VP9 hybrid versions. Cab will get a full teardown, paint and recounting of I/O cards back to top cab like original game, currently in the back mid cab where the interconnect board was, seems like a lot of vibration from puck rebounding. Still not sure of where PC will end up, top cab will get busy and hot, may drop to bottom back cab (leg area).

Going to attempt to take the updated VPX versions with the 3D Hand and add options in the script to allow hybrid use via some setting choices at the top of the script, no sense in maintaining two versions. Base version with Hybrid capability options would seem best option, also need to get out of the VP9 days.

Will need hybrid options for authentic playfield rollover switches, no pin reset motor sound, no pin cycling action, zoom into view backglass only, also had an option to allow the PBX Instructions button to be used as a Coin Button for free play type gaming for games without freeplay options in rom.

A good question poped up about why not just control shutdown with VP, since it's a standalone game, why even use PBX...

There are multiple types of shuffle alleys, most built with 5 types of scoring on each. They used a standard 3 to 4 games on most (Regulation, Flash, Strike 90, Double Flash) for scoring and the other 1 or 2 were special to the machine or era. So there is reason to have PBX to allow different shuffle games to be played. The neat thing is they never changed the playfield switch wiring, so the cabinet is compatible with every williams and united shuffle games ever built.

Plan was to test run a blank table with just script, then use the backglass files to the full single screen.  Unfortunately with this setup, the BG looks great, but there is no way to get the input keys to be recognized wih the table running in the background, thus the Backglass/ROM sit there in attract mode until the blank table is brought to the front, then you have DMD over a blank table and BG hidden.  Looks like no way to run a game with a single screen with just the BG/DMD on it, must have a table in the for front.

Would be great, then no table or graphics adjustments needed, the BG would autosize and the script would take care of the input/output mapping, but no joy…

Looks like back to running no backglass files, just running a table zoomed into the scoreboard area with DMD over the top...
