Sorry for such an ignorant post, but what is the proper way to upgrade from 10.6 to this beta? Everything in my setup is working perfectly, so I do not want to screw anything up. But there are some awesome tables are coming out as 10.7 beta only, so I want to update. Thanks!

if using Popper front-end you can watch this and use 10.7 optionally on certain tables.. https://youtu.be/8hHtfLLt2dc?t=1954

Great option in your software, but I need instructions for non-frontend update. I am not using the Popper system. Thanks though
Is it not safe to upgrade to 10.7 for all tables yet?

I see a Scripts folder in the update... do I delete my old Scripts folder, or merge the two?
I assume I need to merge the new Tables folder with my current, or is this not needed?
I see a bunch of misc files in the new 10.7 folder where the VPinballX.exe is located... do I just copy those into my root folder, or do i need to delete some of my old ones?

FYI - I'm currently on the latest 10.6

What I do as developing and not playing is always have the builds separate. I grab the releases from github now so they go into directories like that, so I have a few.

In your case though I would keep them just VP10-6 - VP10-7. If you save a game into 10.7 then stuck to that version, that's all you have to worry about to be fair but you can always play the 10.6 in 10.7.

Sometimes I opened up older tables to VP10-6 which were looking good at the time, now look like ass, so there is that to consider when making big version jumps.

Latest rev of VPX won't start. Help please!

Did you try re downloading Because it worked fine for me

Yes I did, but nothing happens.

Install 10.6 and then overwrite with 10.7 should work.
Run vpinmame setup and make sure the paths are correct
especially if you don't have it installed on disk c:

Although I'm not the most expert here, maybe I'll help you

Still nothing happens,

What I did was backup my entire Visual Pinball folder and then copy the latest 10.7 beta over my visual pinball install.  Make sure to use 7zip so when you unzip the files nothing is blocked.  Once I did that I have been running all 10.6 tables for the last several weeks with no issues on the latest 10.7 beta.  As chepas points out, if you open a 10.6 table in 10.7 and then save it (say adjusting POV), it is saved as 10.7 and there is no going back for that table file.

I think you could always do the manual version of the Pinup Popper suggestion above and just install 10.7, but rename the exe to VPinballX107.exe and put your 10.6 executable in the visual pinball folder with the default name (VPinballX.exe). If you want to open a 10.7 table you will just need to launch the exe first and load the table from the program.

I was in the same boat as you and wanted to try the new tables from JP and others so I made the leap.  I have had no issues with 10.7, but YMMV.  Its still beta after all. I think it was worth it, but I'm not right in the head and think half the fun is getting everything working and playing with all the updates. ;)

Rename the VP10.6.exe as you want, for example "VPinballX62", and then overwrite everything in your VPinball folder with the last VP10.7 beta

Then you can play your VP10.6 tables using VPinballX62.exe and only your VP10.7 tables using VPinballX.exe

Good info guys, thanks. I think I will just sit by and wait for VPX to develop a bit more, hopefully to the point it doesn't screw up old tables when saved in 10.7. I see a comment a few above that mention 10.7 screwing up Mata Hari; which is one of my favorite tables, so that would suck. Plus, I would rather keep all my tables opening with one default exe. Simpler for my setup with the front end I am using - BigBox.

I do the same as Batch.

I rename the 10.6.exe

Then I overwrite when asked.

Now I start tables with the 10.6.exe that I am working on. (Only until Beta is out of beta phase)

and play the rest with the beta.

If I double click a table, it opens with the new beta.

Download 10.7 beta

Unzip to a temp folder

rename VPinballX.exe to VPinballX 10.7.exe

Now copy contents of temp folder to visual pinball folder

say yes to overwrite 89 files

vpx 10.6.1 is now still the default

and you can choose to run 10.7 as you wish

editing a table in 10.7 will most likely always make said table look like a white on white on white stanley kubric version, if played in 10.6, WHEN EDITED AND SAVED IN 10.7 due to changes in file structure and how the graphics are addressed.
10.7 wont do anything to the table from just playing it in it.

Here comes my dumb question. Does anyone know if VPX-v7 or future version can support the insertion of a flat 3d object (square/rectangle) then project a mp4 video clip on to it without using pup-pack technology to do it? (Like the mini TV in Batman 66 or the Wonkavision in W.W., or the Crystal ball in WOZ)

flexDMD can display a DMD scene on a flasher on the playfield

in fact it can display 1 video on the DMD and a totally different video on a playfield flasher

I was a little confused by this... the video just shows adding a vpinball107.exe to your vpinball folder, and setting up popper to launch with an alt exe; but what about all the other files that are coming as part of the 10.7 install?  I'm not seeing how you're letting popper know where to find and use them.

For tables you want to run with the 10.7 version you put vpinball107.exe in the alternate launcher parameter for the game in Pinup Popper.  Once this is done and you have the current launch script setup for Pinup Popper for Visual Pinball you are good to go.  Basically, the launch script checks to see if you have something entered in the alternate launch parameter for the game.  If not, it just runs the default vpinballx.exe. If you have something entered into the alternate launcher parameter it uses that value instead (in this case the vpinball107.exe).  Its a pretty simple way to get the flexibility if you want to run both side by side.

Keep in mind that when you setup the visual pinball directory to run 10.6 and 10.7 all the supporting files other than the exe have been updated to 10.7. 10.6 will run fine with these, so your visual pinball directory has all the updated files with both the 10.6 exe (labeled as the default vpinballx.exe) and the 10.7 exe (labeled as vpinball107.exe).  So which version of pinball you run is a simple matter of just running the correct exe file.

Yeah, that's the part I understand.  What I don't understand is all the updated scripts and dlls that come with 10.7, that non-popper people are being told to overwrite over the existing 10.6 files.  If popper people are just copying over the exe, does that mean you can run 10.7 tables without any of those new scripts and dlls?

Edit: nm, I just saw your edit.  What you say is what I've assumed, but in the video, I'm not seeing the new supporting files in the folder that he's pasting the new 10.7 exe into.  That's what I'm confused about.

Clone bug material, if I clone a material and rename it with a name in previous alphabetical order, a dozen extra materials with the same name are created.

In the official version VPX06 if I do the same test, the cloning of the material enters an infinite loop of cloning.

An alphabetical reordering of the material, before cloning the material, makes the cloning work correctly.
