I'm sorry, MTPPC, but I chuckled a little when I watched the IMDB.com trailer for Atlantic Rim. Sorry that someone fooled you. I remember when one of the Transformer movies came out and a coworker wasn't paying close enough attention and watched a movie called Transmorphers. Completely different.
I saw Pacific Rim the other day and enjoyed it. I am not a "monster movie" kind of guy, but the action and fight scenes were great. The acting was good, etc. My only real complaint is that there was nothing, absolutely nothing unique or unexpected (as in it was predictable) with the movie. Everything has been done so many times before. I still enjoyed it, and I am sure that some of the clips will show up on one of my future blu-ray demo discs, but I won't buy it.
***Potential spoiler alert. Do not read any more if you plan to watch the film***
The pieces that I am talking about that are re-hashes or predictible are things like:
Top pilot has tragic event, runs away, hiding from his past, gets found doing manual labor that nobody else wants to do (3 guys just died, we have 3 new job openings like was cliche), gets found by the government, goes back into service, is called an old man by a guy who is about his age that happens to be a pilot with his father, has people competing to be his co-pilot, the asian girl (who we knew all along was the "adopted" daughter of the head military character) competes, is clearly the best, told she will NOT be it, but is it, test happens, bond (despite being the "strongest bond ever") fails, fight ensues, everyone is angry with them and they are outcasts, the biggest monster event happens, and they bench a critical chunk of the team, other Jagers get destroyed and thus thrusts the benched team into action, who manage to kick butt. Oh don't forget that they "seal up" the robots before going to the bottom of the ocean, but the main character Jager has an arm ripped off, and a leg almost gone, and yet there is just a little spray of water on the pilots. And when the monster body-part broker guy gets killed, it was so obvious that it was going to happen. Back to the predictable story line, Mako's life support is failing as O2 is dropping fast... REALLY fast, as in it would only drop that fast if there was a leak in her suit, but our hero give her his oxygen and life boats her. Why couldn't the "son" and "general" life boat away? I mean, it is fairly easy to do, and they still had power. OK, so one of them needs to push the button, fine, lifeboat the son and let the dying general die. OK, back on target, then they drop into the tunnel, and while the instructions were to blow up INSIDE the tunnel, because on either end wouldn't work, they wait until they are face to face with the aliens on the other side, and blow the nuclear core. If it didn't work on earth, it wouldn't have collasped the tunnel/bridge. Of course, no pulse, but that was expected, and then magically "poof" he is breathing again, but not out of breath. They are now heros, and there isn't a tear shed for anyone lost... Son, dad, friend...nothing.
Anyway, I focused on the predictable from the main character's perspective, been there, done that, part of the film. It still was enjoyable. Just not original.
