Keep in mind it may be my set up. On my more powerful VR PC I can't get the SOB to recognise my USB3 ports as ... USB3 so that's a bummer right there. I am going to inquire on getting a USB-C pciexpress adapter since that would should work I think. Also it's very much in beta, so they may work out some bugs. I love my quest, wireless VR is the future for sure and even though it's not PC level, I think it does a great job overall!
Now onto the main news, yes, I did install and try my valve index.
The install did not go smoothly got steam vr saying one of my basestations was acting up, to unplug and replug it. it kept acting up until I updated everything (HMD, controllers and both basestations). Now everything seems to be working ok
Previously with the Rift S, I had decent success, resolution was now in the "playable" range (didn't think it was enough with the Vive/Rift previously). I still found some of the table elements in the back of the table were a little low resolution but overall can't complain. With the Quest via link, it was overall a poor experience but as I indicated, the device is not being recognized on my more powerful dedicated VR PC so I don't think that's fair to rate the Quest/Link/VPVR combo. In saying that, even if I can get it to work well, there is compression for the Quest/Link to work so it may have better blacks then the Rift S but the resolution won't be as good.
So onto the Index. The Valve index has a larger FOV, much larger than I expected and that is nice to have with the nice VR ROOM versions of the tables. It's an LCD panel so blacks aren't as deep as people would like so on initial load of Rawd's Triple Strike I went "holy crap, the blacks are disgusting". To be honest I was TOTALLY bummed out. Played it for a bit and was so taken aback I would say the experience was poor, much worse than the Rift S which doesn't make sense since the panels are similar. Then I noticed when I quite the table the blacks got better all of a sudden as the tables quit. Ok that's odd, so I exited, checked the settings, all looked good. WTF? Tried again and then I noticed I still had the steam Vr panel to the left. So I closed it and then BOOM! Blacks are there and more than "good enough". So everything looked good.
And then I loaded TOTAN and holy cow was I ever blown away. Now I haven't tested this with the Rift S but I can saw on the Index I was blown away. Running in VPX with the SS at 1.5 (and possibly even higher not sure what Steam VR set itself to) everything was very clear, whether I'm looking at the treasure room, the hulking Genie above the table, the table itself, everything looked really good. Yes, its not perfect resolution, we aren't there yet but it's certainly good enough with the elements at the back of the table staying very clear. There's a bit of shimmering going on but it's not that distracting and could be an artifact on how my settings are set to. Great design in making this "VR room" version of TOTAN, A1 experience. People who aren't into VR or VP but are into pinball should try this out and if there jaw doesn't drop, I'm taking a pulse to ensure they are indeed alive!
