I finally had some time to spend on VPVR on the Valve Index and have had pretty good success, but am still struggling with a few things that I hope somebody can help me out with. I've got the latest versions of VPX and VPVR installed, and I'm using the settings that Gear323 posted recently. I have SteamVR set to 100% supersampling and VPVR to 133% or 150% (am switching between them). PC hardware is a 1080ti and Ryzen 3600X. I'm pretty VR performance savvy, as I've owned a VIVE since release. I'm also using fpsVR to monitor frame times / FPS.
I have Pinmame setup to NOT use external DMD dll (more on this later) and not to show DMD. Color is turned off.
First of all the good: TOTAN VR and TAF VR look incredible and run at a solid 90+ fps. Loading a standard VPX table runs fantastic, obviously without any DMD showing. My troubles are mostly around getting DMDs to appear properly.
1) I've tried multiple FSS tables (created by Arconovum and posted on vpinball.com) and they all work fine, but they appear to be EXTREMELY low resolution. Lots of shimmering and very difficult to see any detail on the playfield or backless. This seems like a setting issue, because I can export the image assets from those tables and they look very high resolution. I'd love to get these tables working, especially for the non-DMD tables. Most recent ones I tried and had issues with: Fathom, Pinbot.
2) I've also used the Clean Room VR posted by drhotwings and have used that to copy the room/cabinet assets into a standard table (e.g. Getaway II) and it all works well, apart from having an AC/DC backless (I could change the image I know) but still either no DMD showing, or sometimes showing but it is half height. In fact, the AC/DC VR room also has this half height DMD issue out of the box. DMDs work great on TOTAN and TAF, but I'm struggling outside of those two.
3) I also tried using Freezy DLL (tried 1.7.1 and recent 1.7.3 builds) to render color DMD in TOTAN. This was working fine, but the performance hit was horrible (similar to what Gear323 reported). I noticed that GPU frame time took a 35% performance hit, and CPU frame time went through the roof - like 3x the non-color frame time. Overall fps dropped below 70 so it was unplayable. We have similar hardware (1080ti, Valve Index) so maybe it is something related to that. Would love to get this working as I really enjoyed color DMDs on my P 2 DMD in my full size cabinet.
4) This is more of an annoyance, but whenever I launch a table for the second time without exiting VPVR, it doesn't show up in the headset. I gather this is somehow related to auto VR detection, which apparently doesn't work in some scenarios. Makes experimenting even more difficult.
5) B2S. I realize this is not fully supported but if they do exist I understand that a static image of the backless will be shown. This does work for me, but obviously not when you create a VR version since you've got a rendered cabinet in there that is going to fight with the B2S. Curious how people are creating standalone VR tables w/ proper back glasses. I was thinking perhaps a VR cabinet without a backbox or at least the front. Need to experiment more with this.
I have read through this entire thread and I understand the basics of how the Flasher dmd works, but for some reason it just isn't working properly for me. I wonder if it has to do with the PinMame settings (could somebody post what their settings look like?). Of course, I'm using the same Pinmame settings for the TOTAN and TAF roms and those work fine, which is why I'm scratching my head.
If anybody would be willing to create some simple instructions on JUST adding a DMD to a non-VR table, that would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and by the way, I cannot say how AMAZING VPVR is. Even without DMDs I'm playing tables that I spent a good amount of time on in my cabinet, and it is an entirely new experience. I cannot imagine ever playing flat screen VPX again. Looking forward to building my PinSim later this month.
