BAM uses a plugin system for head tracking, and FreeTrack is one of the supported methods. It also supports the microsoft kinect and a single IR led tracking (with wimotes or PS eye on your pinball backbox).

Ravarcade did a really nice job on that. A simple webcam with the freetrack plugin is very nice on tracking my head, and the predict filter should even improve these results.

Thanks Rav! Steps 1-3 are as I imagined, but I didn't know there's such an easy way to do step 4! So BAM uses FreeTrack for head tracking?

BAM uses one math (almost of from openCV). FreeTrack is just one of supported "devices".

I mention FreeTrack, because i like FreeTrack comunication solution. With shared memory (memory-mapped file) user don't need copy/install dlls. Just run tracker first, then program will find data in RAM with memory-maped-file.

. Would having mm make things much easier for table authors, or is it only a minor convenience?

I think it would only be a minor convenience even though mm just feels a lot more natural but if it would really break stuff it's just not worth it I'd say.

Personally I'd like to see walls with a given thickness that can be shaped using only one control point (like in the FP editor), (shapeable) rubber object like in FP and wire guides just like in FP.

I think when it comes to the editor FP is a lot more convenient to work with so getting VP closer to that would be nice.

+1

I wrote at the first page of this thread a list of wishes, ones more important than others, but I think those ones are very important when you're building a table (I'm wasting hours in every table making the guides and rubbers look right with ramps and walls)

VP editor needs an approach to the FP editor.

melon I have a test table if you want it, with rubbers made out of primitives.. It saves a bunch of time and they look really nice.. I'd be more than happy to share with you.. Let me know and I can sent it to you.. :-)

It'd certainly add a degree of seriousness to the editor. Arbitrary units is rather silly when you consider that VP has a whole lot of real table emulation going on.

If this suggestion breaks something (I didn't know backwards compatibility was planned for vp10) then could you consider adding support for displaying units in mm just to the UI, and leave the internals and old tables running the vp units? So for example, somewhere in preferences, I could select mm as units, and have all UI measurements be automatically converted prior to display in the UI?

While we're at it, some rulers around the edges of the PF, and perhaps a way to draw an arbitrary straight line on the PF to measure the distance between two points would be very nice. If VP is to step up it's game in version 10 then making the editor that little bit more of a serious CAD tool would certainly get my vote.

I hate manually tweaking tables for the Controller Settings i.e. Hidden, Location, and things of this such. Since starting with 10 lots of tables will be recoded by authors can we implement a master controller for these settings?

It's really hard at the moment to select objects, especially if they are underneath another one. And it's also hard to right click a small selected object (or if it's selected but underneath another one) to select an option (like rotate, assign to, etc.). And if the area is magnified the editor become THAT slow. Would be nice to have this fixed for VP10! :)

a better soundmanager where you can select multiple tables out your tablefolder to edit the sound of all that tables in one time ,maybe make a dof option that dissable all sounds out tables that is not needed ..

also make sliders to adjust table dimensions

Thinking today not about the impossible to do, but the hard to do.

It would be nice for the editor, especially the backdrop editor to have a setting for 4/3 16/9 16/10 etc. and portrait/landscape.

It would be nice to be able to hold the mouse buttons to adjust the table angle, POV, layback, etc. and maybe shift key and mouse (throw in cursor keys too) for offsets. With visual feedback. Maybe spikes that would show the result of layback. This is a great deal of trial and error for me as it is now.

The plunger needs as high of resolution as you could give it. Count the pixels of an average plunger on the screen. 256? 230 of motion? The plunger needs to be ideal for it to become a standard.

Rubber bands. It's time for VP to get rubbers. A few nice beveled posts thrown in just because.

Isdropped = true and false as the start of a motion, not an end result. As an option of course, with a user defined time, if they don't like your default.

That's my two cents for now, but I have a couple of bucks if you want more.

Since vp10 will have the new physics. I suggest you create a new registry location other than the currently new VP9 location that will be for the latest compability release for main use.

If you have analog nudging enabled you have to reset the x and y gain settings to approx one tenth of the VP9.9.0 settings for the physmod versions.

This makes switching between the two versions inconveinent since they both currently share this registery sub folder. This has also been mentioned by slashbot in the physics thread.

If the orientation, scaling, and viewing angle where handled by the renderer, would just one table work for both desktop and FS?  That would be great!

My wishlist:

  • #1 request by a mile is full polygonal display with ortho/perspective toggle. One table can then work for ANY view angle/cab/desktop.
  • The editor could have a sideways "elevation" view alongside, and aligned with, the standard top-down view (for Blender users, the "Right Ortho" view, but rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise). In this elevation view you could drag any item to adjust its verticality.
  • In tandem with this elevation view, the ability to adjust the verticality (and perhaps width) of each point on a ramp. (I've been out of the VP scene for a while. Maybe 3D meshes fulfill this now?)
  • Others have already suggested it: tubular rubbers (no more fake stacks of walls or ramps to make rubbers look dimensional)
  • No more storing music in a common folder. It should be with the table itself.
  • This has also been suggested elsewhere: modular file format.
  • Commonsense and trivial ergonomic things like making the "Manager" dialog boxes resizable.

I'm sure I will think of other things later.

Head tracking like in BAM would be awesome! Having those visuals with VP's physics would be a dream come true for me.

That said, I just upgraded to 9.9 over the weekend, and it's great!

Grouping objects would be nice! At the moment, if I select a screw that is made up of several objects, it can happen that not all are selected. If they can be grouped, the whole group will be selected by simply clicking a part of it.

Reshape the flippers.

Use light bulbs instead of bumpers and lights to make those. Flat top and round top.

Spinning lights.

Sideway spinners.

Better sling shots. More real looking.

Better kickers and drains. More real looking as well.

Better ramps.
