That's an interesting question, I would say that there is no such thing as a "right" to make the tables and if so, it wouldn't be held by the forums itself. The setup is that you can make anything with the editor (although scanning playfields or even redrawing them could also be infringing on certain rights and/or artistic ownership), it's the ROMs that are the main issue. And that's why the program asks if you "own" the ROM (or rather the machine in which it resides) when you first start the table. That said, I think the remaining pinball manufacturers/holders of the rights to the ROM's themselves are happy with the existence of these forums because of the potential customers that roam around here. A lot of members also own real tables and/or interested in buying new ones. And there has been a strict enforcement of the gentleman's agreement to not emulate tables that are current now. They only can be emulated when the manufacturer switches to new technology and I have also read somewhere that there is a 5 year grace period, but that may well be Stern's production cycle regarding upgrading the existing technology. Well, this is how I understand it, but people, feel free to correct/fill in etcetera!

Did you know that "playing pinball" is called "flipperen" in Dutch? Now you know and may your life be enriched by this arcane knowledge....

I'd be very shocked if they don't try to remove all re-creations.. PC release is coming.. no way they'll allow freebies out there..

If the manufacturers are OK with what we do, as they are, it seems to me that that is all that matters. There seems to be a lot of evidence that what we do increases sales for manufacturers. People like me would never consider buying a real machine if it were not for the exposure and excitement VP and these forums provide.
Edit: Also I wanted to mention that Farsight will get tons of customers (if tables are as good as they seem) from us, that they wouldn't have otherwise had. I don't think it would be wise of them to piss us off.

When I first read they were getting licenses from everyone, I also thought about this, but if they make a superior product, then this community will be on it like flies on dung. We are really fans of video pinball, not really VP fanboys. I am hoping they make a great product and if so, also release lots of tables.

You have discovered an Easter egg. Pat yourself on the back.

Does anyone know if you can have a fixed camera view on this?
It looks excellent except for the constantly moving view - one of things I love about VP is the fixed view. I've always hated moving views on pinball games...when playing real pinball, I tend to look at where the ball is going to be rather than exactly where it is right now. I find it annoying in the same way as watching a "3D" film - they're showing you where they think you should be looking, rather than where you might want to be looking - for films this destorys the illusion of 3D for me, for pinball it ruins the game if I can't line up my next shot until the ball is actually at the flipper.
Also the moving camera views can be so unrealistic...for those here that have every played a real Black Hole - have you ever played the bottom playfield with that kind of view? I know I haven't.
Regards,
Dan.

If you check out the same youtube channel you will see a static view - the moving views also drive me nuts as well. They have also hinted at a cabinet mode with multi screen support so it is looking promising. They also mentioned a free roaming camera mode - imagine if this option would allow us to select a view a lock it (like a user definable static view) then that would be awesome. Fingers crossed.
Edit: I just posted the above suggestion on their youtube channel as they see open to feedback and suggestions

In the williams collection you had 5 static angles and 5 moving angles to choose from. I sometimes like the moving angles so I can see up at the top of the table in more detail. It's nice on games like Black Knight and Sorcerer. During multiball it zooms out to a static view.

To be superior they need full setting menu + home rom's + swear rom's.
Pro pinball had a good setting menu that looked alot like the ones on real games.

Here's a new version of Tales of the arabian nights, it looks much better then the pinball hall of fame: the williams collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
I dunno, im still concered over the lack of lighting being used on the tables ive seen so far, nothing 'flashes' or has refelective lighting it just seems very bland on the whole lighting front really.
Just look at this gameplay of a real TOTAN (in 1080p) and you'll see the wonderful lighting, surely they can recreate this??..........

The ramps don't look that great either, I think JP's alpha ramps on TOTAN look much better.
I do like how the ball rolls down the ramp and also how it comes off the flippers.

TOM video just added.....
TOM
I agree with lettuce that many more reflections are needed - other than that the physics look ok to me and the new ball really makes a world of difference.

The colors look a little cartoonish as opposed to realistic and I agree that the contrast is such that the great lighting on these tables is not depicted. It could be the low resolution youtube video. Even if it isn't, thats probably not going to stop me from buying it especially if the physics are there.
