here's an example.... how and why would we want every one of these named the same?

lol... oh and i am a HUGE table hoarder , you never know when the VP apocalypse might happen  

 

I'll believe in the never say never, when its more than just some random dude frustrated about the having to use Ctrl+C>Ctrl+V

 

this is one search one table name.... were going to name all these the same?? this is only 3 pages worth, there were more...

I did not say they would have the same name. I said they would have a standardized naming convention, there would be a whole lot of the same words in each file name and in a standardized order.  If it was done correctly, b2s would work just fine with 1 file and media would work just fine with the names as well.

Make sure that all the 20 downloads that Replay needs are included in the zip example. We might as well do this correctly

You might want to check if he has a 2 or 3 monitor setup and which version or versions of the table he prefers so the media he gets from the download will match the table he plays.

Oooh, I really like that last wheel image so please include that one for my download. I think VPCabs probably went with the first wheel, so include that one in Replay's download. Hauntfreaks do you have a preferred wheel image Mike should include for you?

Don't forget to include the AFM table audio and table launch audio files from gstav and the AFM backglasses from wildman, and the AFM real color DMD videos from sigma415 if Replay has a color rgb DMD display...

Hello Mike, i perfectly understand and agree your point. No technology involve, no performance issue. I personaly search hard sometimes. Is it the fun part, no ! The fun part is build the cab,play, talk with authors. Yes.

uhm... yeah.  I don't know what you are going on about.  

I talked about a standardized naming convention for files you download from this site.  I said nothing about a bulk pack download. Nor did I talk about removing peoples ability to choose whatever files they want to download or use.

I specifically mentioned THIS site.  Careful Joe, I don't want you banned for mentioning other sites.

Paul has many posts and instructions out there suggesting the same thing when uploading files, but its not currently validated or enforced.

 

lets give an example

Table - mfg - year - mod type - description - author - version .whatever

 

table - chosen from a dropdown of previously validated names (ipdb?)

mfg - auto-populated from validated source

year - same

mod type - drop down list of common mod types (including 'original')

description - the only free text field that would be used in the file name to expand on Mod type

author - taken from the uploader (maybe editable?)

version - predefined by upload, 1st upload of the file, 2nd, 3rd etc.

 

The spaces and/or delimiters in the name would be generated by the site and be consistent. 

 

That would be for recreations. Original creations would have to have the same fields but different selection methods when filling out the upload.

This isn't about $6000 pincabs and I don't even have a pinball cab myself, but that doesn't exclude myself from wanting to enjoy playing tables and have artwork shine in a front-end.

 

After a few days worth of posting my ideas and trying to get feedback for improvement, I understand now why so many people simply resort to parting with cash and buying pre-built drives or pre-loaded cabs. I'm trying to do things the right way here and yet I'm being attacked with profanity and insults.

 

You guys are also over complicating all of this. The average person or new users to the site looking to get into VP because they've seen it in action at a friends house won't be concerned about having every table in existence, so the argument about 10 different tables that are yet the same in some ways is completely invalid.

 

I sincerely hope you guys are smart enough to backup your data because if your drive all of a sudden fails, I'm sure you'll be back at the forums downloading files one by one right?

You'll see how ridiculous starting from scratch actually is right? Of course the reality is in the event you didn't backup, you just PM a friend or an author buddy that supplies you an entire setup privately to practically get you back to where you were and that's OK in your eyes because no money is being exchanged or you're a VIP/author right?

 

HyperSpin and other sites have sync tools that automatically sync artwork collections in the background and some sort of system like this makes the most sense when dealing with the amount of artwork on this scale that resides in many different folders. Tables and ROMs are a non factor here because tables can be downloaded one by one and the majority know how to get entire ROM packs.

 

The issue here or major roadblock is getting all the artwork in it's proper expected folders that match the description naming in a XML file.

I'm happy to take suggestions and work with them to make this place better and easier for new members. I have a lot in the works, at the moment, to do just that. Our frontend, for example, will navigate the site and download all required files once it's finished. It'll be a HUGE step in making things easier, for sure.

My personal feelings are:
The VPX installer has been a great addition to the site, and it allows new people to set up the software an awful lot easier.

I am now on cab no2.  I took the files from my first cab and everything still needed reconfiguring.

Also - do you really want what one person considers is the best AFM/MM/STTNG etc.... ?   I try an awful lot of tables and end up only putting maybe 10% into my cabinet.  Will always try a new version, but if I think the old version is better - I will delete the new one.

I would say to everyone dont assume a VPX table is better than say a VP phy mod, in my practice the VP9 mod tables play the best!  But that is my opinion having played most of the original pinball tables these games are based on.

But if someone came to my home in the hobby and asked me for my table files, I would let them have them.  At the end of the day they are free here and on other sites.

This I agree with although I haven't personally used the installer because my setup has been going since VPX itself was already released, however, the rest of your post makes no sense as to what's being discussed and proposed here. Um, what? Would you care to elaborate? This sounds like instead of shipping a cab with VP and tables you are going to ship it with a front-end which will then install it all???

Nope. It's a frontend that navigates the site and loads table by table. While loading,the user will see all the credited authors and be invited to join the community.

You won't have to buy a cabinet to use it. It'll be free for everyone.

I get so MAD when I see this, and it really does not effect me ,I make FP tables. I just hate to see the developers here get screwed over like that.

 

I sent a more detailed letter..Maybe something will happen, but probably not.

He has MAME roms, VP tables, FP tables for sell,they all have the same time limit, and he's only sold one of each..They claim.
