ok screw it i'm not gonna use glass in the bg anyway tongue.gif

anyway i was thinking of changing the hdd to a ssd i was thinking of getting a Corsair Force Series 60GB but there's mixed feelings about ssd exsp on whirpool they say they tend to break down a lot is it really worth getting ssd for vp/hp?

I've heard the same thing about SSD's and was told to wait until the technology improved.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary, anyway. If you mount your PC toward the back, the shock/jolt/overall movement of your HDD is minimal at best.

Never had a problem with HDD's yet.

So, bladexdsl, are you still planning on selling these with HyperPin and table setups?

No, it's not cool, neither is flaming a member of the board.

Guys, I think he's figured out it's not a good idea, and he wants to build a cab for himself.

Let it go.

I am hoping to get an SSD for my birthday so I can install it in my cabinet. The HD has been fine, but I think the SSD should run Hyperpin and load the tables a bit quicker.

What the heck Wildman?

He had all of his computer stuff in the first thread... Then later in the thread he shows his setup with no cabinet. Then he ordered a hardware kit from Paul, and now he has ordered and is waiting for his flat pack cabinet to arrive.

I don't want to drag this out further, but I think that your response was messed up. Why would someone bullshit about building a cabinet? When did he ask everyone to do his build? He doesn't have a clue and bothers people with all of his bullshit? Did I miss something?

You seem like a real nice guy in the chat room. Maybe I don't know the full story, but if you posted that response in one of my threads, I would be pretty hurt.

TBH I wouldn't trust SSDs with important stuff...like tables. biggrin.gif

I wouldn't trust any hard drive, SSD or otherwise, with anything important. Throw a second drive into the machine and back up to it, so you don't have to reconfigure everything from the ground up if there's a failure.

In terms of SSDs, the newer ones are better than the older ones. In my experience (which is reasonably extensive - I own a small IT company, and use a fair number of SSD and spinning drives for desktops and servers), newer SSDs have been proving reliable enough to trust. Over the last year or so, they've gotten much better. When I've experienced a failure on older SSDs, they tended to not just die, but start to lag and return timeouts. I was still able to retrieve all of the data from them and move it to a new SSD.

Still - backups are the answer. Or RAID, if you're a fanatic (use RAID class drives, not desktop drives, though - desktop drives wander off for several seconds when they have problems, which will cause the whole machine to stop in it's tracks while it does it, and often cause a blue screen. RAID class drives don't waste time on problem data - they just mark the sector bad, report the error to the RAID controller, and move on. Something like the Western Digital RE4 is a good choice for RAID).

What I've done with the build I'm working on is put an accessible USB on the cabinet, then if I add a table or change something, I plug in an external USB hard drive and image the entire SSD to it so I have a complete copy of the entire install, Windows and all. That's as safe as safe gets *grin*. I could just as easily connect a network cable to the cabinet and image to a machine on the network, too. I could even automate the process to happen at 3am or something, too, if I wanted to go bananas - lots of desktop backup tools have that ability. Acronis comes to mind right off.

So, there's some ideas to protect your hard work. Setting up the perfect configuration is a fair amount of effort - it's worth backing it up.

...Paul

I have been using my OCZ - Vertex2 for 7 months and it is doing great. It is a small 40G SSD that I currently have 300 tables loaded on. 200 of the tables have a HyperPin video so it is a fair indicator of how little space a full pinball cab takes up. Now I did have space issues when using Windows 7. I switched to TinyXP and saved myself 16G of hard drive space. Something to consider if you are looking at a smaller gig SSD. But you have been sparing no expense bladexdsl so go get a 100G SSD. biggrin.gif

I backup my cab using an external HD connected via the USB hub I mounted on the underside of my cab. You can just backup all of the folders and registry and you are covered. Doing a full image would be nicer though. I may look into that.

Having a cabinet to play full screen pins is awesome! Check out my mini pin cab here on VPForums.
