Phantom of the opera had very tricy hole on the right side of the table, that was positioned so, that correctly aimed shot just made the ball run over the hole, futhermore the (cursed)hole lacked the sloping to help catching the ball. You needed alot of luck to get the ball drop into the hole.(I never had such a "stroke of luck"

That one LOTR I played in Florida - I've probably mentioned it quite a few times - with the permanently tilted playfield. Wow, was that one a pain in the neck to play.
Aside from that, I can't seem to get a decent game out of the local Mousin' Around - I've stopped playing it when the BOP and the TAF rolled in for that very reason.

It would have to be Space Invaders, this thing was solid and heavy, I recall once or twice actually throwing myself to the floor trying to nudge this beast of a machine, mind you I was only a little tyke back then.

I am rather surprised that there has been no mention of Pinbot. Even though I have had only a few chances to play a real version of the machine, it is an absolute drain monster. With the minimal nudging skills I possess putting up high scores on that machine is more based on luck than skill. Many times I would have a great ball, but the next would go down the left out-lane only seconds after getting the ball in play.

yeah fish tales is the first one that comes to mind.
the captive ball in the center of the boat is a drain magnet, and the jackpot isn't exactly easy to get what with the time limit and all.
sure the locks are easy to obtain, but after all three of them come flying at you it's difficult to lock one of them (forget two of them) then hit that far left orbit hard enough to hit the ball catcher in the given time limit.
great/unique/fun pin but i don't think i've ever gotten a full tackle box in a legit game.

The last real machines I've played were Stern's SAM-based Spiderman, Pirates Of The Caribbean and Wheel Of Fortune (@ Funhouse Arcade, Renesse Holland). WOF and POTC gave me hard times keeping the ball in play. Also the Marvel DLC tables for Pinball FX2 are quite difficult to achieve ingame goals in (as well as the achievements, not real machines, I know). Same for the Earth Defense DLC table for this game. Overall the game lacks clear rulesheets an most of the tables have some difficult shots when it comes to aiming for it. But if you have a good LCD-tv, this game is eye-candy.

Super Mario Brothers by Gottlieb is a drain monster. I played that table at a Kid o Robics when I was growing up in the 90's. Damn machine... I loved it because it was Super Mario and lemme tell you, although the shots aren't difficult to make, but man was it tough covering all the bonus scores.

No Fear = No Fun, nothing but habitrails pushed all the way to the top of the playfield and a huge open bottom pf. 1 false shot and you're done.
Very bad game IMO.

For me, the hardest game I ever played was Hercules.
At least the one I played. Under-powered flippers trying to hit that cue ball would never allow the ball to get up the lanes or spin the spinner. And this was when the game was NEW!!!

But the most challenging is one that you'll marvel at if you ever have the chance to play it in person. Gottlieb's 1934 Flying Trapeze Senior has two diamond shaped sections where your balls can land, and if you hit the top most kicker, any balls in the 2 diamond sections will move down the table to the next position. Of course there are other saucers to grab your ball , but if you land a few in the diamonds, and then hit that top spot, the ball movement would amaze you. There was even a yellow ball offering double points if you made that impossible shot.
I can't believe I've missed that Flying Trapeze in the searches I've done of bagatelles. Sounds wonderful and I just downloaded it. I figure my chances of seeing this in real life are pretty much nil.

Hmm, I played this at a Chicago show, and while it was obviously pretty slow, the flippers had enough strength to make all the required shots. I wonder if the owners put stronger solenoids in there or something.
And just a few suggestions for the topic creator:
Alien Poker was the first to come to mind. It's not the hardest table out there, but it's very precise and definitely can make you a better player. Gotta hit the drop targets right-to-left in order, and it's just full of neat shots and strategy. Kristian's VPM version is excellent if you want to give it a try.
Scorpion is a cool widebody with tight shots, especially to get multiball.
F-14 Tomcat is a fave but yeah it's pretty tough.
Seawitch kept me coming back 'cause it's so fun, but it's tough too, particularly because of its speed. Of these I listed I play it the least, but it's popular.
Sinbad is NOT a hard table - I pwn it in real life and on VP - but it came to mind because the flipper design makes you concentrate on making quick shots instead of trapping the ball (I'm definitely a ball-trapping player). If you can think of more difficult tables with similar flipper design they'd fit your bill.
Satin Doll (and her sis, Pat Hand) are extremely underrated games and are some of the most difficult EMs I've played. For difficulty, I'd go with the Satin Doll because of the double flippers on the right. I owned a Satin Doll for 3 years, and still very rarely got a replay on it. I can't say it was unfairly difficult - at least after I balanced it a bit better to prevent an STDM about once every 3 plunger shots when I first got it
And part of the reason I suggested all of these: none of them are outrageously expensive.
*edit* whoa I just remembered the very cool Barracora. Neat artwork, TWO banks of drop targets that you have to hit in order, tough shots, and an addictive quality.
