Is there a way to lower the ROM sound volume? it's so loud and piercing, easily double the loudness of my other tables. I checked the Sound Manager in VPX but it seems that's only the ball roll/collision and solenoid sounds. Tried lowering via the VPX User Properties to no avail, and didn't see any obviously defined variables in the script for volume adjustment.

Open the table script and on Line 66 you will see this...
.Hidden = VarHidden
Change it to this...
.Hidden = 0
Now start the table in DT Mode, and the DMD window will show.
Try left clicking on the DMD with mouse and hit the Tilde key.
(If you have problems clicking on the DMD with mouse, try running the rom from PinMAME32.exe located in your VPinMAME folder.)
This will bring up volume options on the DMD.
Use your left and right arrow keys to adjust volume.
Press the down arrow key to find more volume settings.
When you are finished with adjustments, hit your Tilde key.

Second: How do I start the table in DT mode? I'm not sure what that stands for. Debug Test?
DT Mode = DeskTop Mode
FS Mode = FullScreen Mode
Are you using a cabinet? If so that is FS or Fullscreen mode and usually the screen is rotated for cabinet use.
If the table in pic above looks like yours, then you are already in Desktop Mode.

Yes, I am using a cabinet.
I tried making the change in both DT and FS modes. I successfully brought up the ~ menu and lowered the ROM volume (confirmed lower volume while testing in VPX directly), but as soon as I close the table and reopen it, the ROM volume is back to 100%. I confirmed that the NVRAM file is being written to because the "last modified" value is reflecting the last time I tried to modify the volume.
Isn't it the case that EM machines don't store volume data in NVRam? I thought I had read that somewhere... It would explain why I can use pinmame32.exe to edit this table's ROM volume directly and it still doesn't make a difference to the volume level heard after opening....
I promise I'm not a complete n00b like I appear to be on this subject... I'm just at a loss with this table and a couple others that have drastically louder ROM sounds relative to all my other tables. I've had my cab for almost 2 years and have dozens of tables I've added myself including PuP packs, mods, audio patches, alt color and alt sound patches etc... For some reason, the audio settings on these few tables are eluding me...
Edit: I ended up finding a better solution elsewhere. It turns out that pressing F12 after loading a table is the quickest and easiest way to change ROM volume for older non-DMD tables with backglass scoring. No need to go into DT mode, no modifying scripts, no loading pinmame32 and modifying values. Seems to work for majority of older tables. Pressing F12 brings up a pop-up window where the entry of a number between -32 and 0 lowers the ROM volume. Pressing F3 reloads the ROM and applies the change. Adjust as necessary and that's it. No fuss, no muss.

These types of changes (rom related) are stored in "rom-name".nv
My advice: for changing Rom settings,I always use pinmame32.exe.
Start pinmame32.exe, click test, search/choose the Rom,
Set 'show dmd' in config and click start. The Rom's internal DMD should shown.
Do your changes. The necessary keys are different and depends on Rom manufacturer or Rom generation.
When all done, click on stop. Maybe change back the temp. 'show dmd' to former value.
Close pinmame32.exe. All changes are stored in the related .nv file
Hmmmm I tried doing this, couldn't find "Test". Scrolled through the list of ROMs, found "maiden" and edited the volume properties to lower the volume. Confirmed it apparently wrote to the NV because when I checked the details of the ROM after closing and reopening pinmame32.exe, the lower volume remained. Unfortunately, when I load the table to play it, the ROM volume is all the way back up to 100% and way too loud relative to the 180+ other tables I have.
Am I doing something wrong? Is it necessary to go to "Test" for the steps to work? Or does this method not work on this table because it has backglass scoring and not a DMD that can be used to store modified settings in NVram? I didn't think EMs saved volume settings on a chip.
EDIT: Opening pinmame32.exe doesn't appear to have a "Test" option, but Setup.exe within the VPINMAME folder does. Even using that method, I had no luck because the change would revert the next time the table loaded.
I fixed it by following different recommendations. Pressing F12 after opening a table (either front end or directly in VPX) loads a popup for ROM volume attenuation. Enter a number between -32 and 0, OK and close. F3 to restart ROM and test the lowered volume. It saves on closure with no further messing around, no script changing etc...
