You stumbled upon something very interesting here. It looks like this chap has done a good job to get as far as he has, and he sounds fired up by the whole thing. And best of all we know this isn't a fake now smile.gif.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

I'm sure everyone would use whatever program worked best. Without knowing how it actually plays or how difficult it is to generate a table using this, or what the real physics capabilities are I know I'm not willing to drop $1300 to 'test' -
perhaps someone will release a table without using roms for it to satisfy curiosities like these.

I think that we can always develop and test on our own. We don't have to cough up $1300 until we release something. I'd be happy to cover the $1300, if it's a one-time payment.

So would the payment of $1300 be for the publishing of one table, or would this pay for a new 'pinball engine' to be shared by a multitude of authors?

I'm pleased that details were discovered to illuminate how an FP table was blended with that VPM startup. I'll be watching to see how this unfolds.

According to louiz, it would/could be one executable with loadable tables. An you only pay the $1300 once, for the right to use the engine to develop with. But it's a per person license, I think. According to their page anyway, it's $1300 per person who wants to code with the engine to be legit -- but if the tables are external/loaded and edited with something else like Blender that wouldn't count.

Louiz said he's going to send me an updated stripped table tomorrow with some of the different physics properties set for different materials and such.

This looks interesting. Is this the engine the slamit guys were building their editor with.
Its ashamed we couldn't get an editor made with this that would play tables like vp.
Or build tables in fp and import them directly to.the engine to play them

i haven't tried the demos yet. Are physics better than fp

This isn't the same thing as slamit, like BigBoss said, they were writing their own stuff.

Louiz was trying to write something to convert FP tables to a format this can understand, but he says there's stuff in the file that must be encrypted or something because it's not easy to just pick apart to see how it's put together.

So far the physics are just ... weird. It'll take some tuning/adjusting to get it closer to what feels right.

If we could get a program that looks as good as Slamit or FP, but plays as good (or better) as VP, I'd start believing in God again. I really hope this works out successfully, 'cause we're long overdue for a modern 3D pinball engine with quality physics.

Louiz sent me an updated version. This one runs rotated & top down for a cabinet view. It's a strange view though because it's REALLY straight down, so it looks strange. It also puts balls back into the shooter lane if they go out the drain. I can't really tell if the physics changed between the two test versions.

You can grab the 'cabinet' version of the test at this link.

LVR would be the one to ask about converting from FP to whatever. He did the companion tools and the FPModel editor progs.

Very interested in this project and I think the best way to go (for now) is to use FP to build the tables and a new engine to run them.

epthegeek, have you invited Louiz to come over and join VPF.org? Seeing he can speak good English, maybe he would enjoy the site and the interest his project is getting here. dblthumb.gif

I did give him the link for the thread, and he's read what's here so far. He's a bit tentative to join the forum and jump in because he's a little worried that his project won't live up to what people might expect and he'd let people down. He doesn't want to get anyones hopes up, or get badgered with "why not just dev for VP" requests.

What's the best way for him to get in touch with LVR?

Here's what he sent me about his importing process & problem:

QUOTE
‪I use a command line tool (called istorage.exe) that can extract structured data from fpt or fpl files‬

‪I give you an example :‬
‪I extract data from badcats.fpl with this tool.‬
I get all subdirectories from the library , i'll take as an exemple the backglass data (wich is a jpeg , i can see it with an hex editor)‬
‪The file is here: http://louizou.fr/FDAT.bin‬
‪If you look at the header's file you can see a bunch of data before the classical JFIF header.so i guess the file is crypted or compressed with kind of LZO compression.

I googled a lot and found nothing on how doing this.‬ ‪That's where i am stuck. I can't read the jpeg. it's the same problem with the 3D models who are MS3D files but with modified header .‬

I just need some command line tool or mono2.0 or c# code that can decrypt or unpak those kind of files‬

Not quite. It's table files from FP, loaded into the Unity 3D engine to actually run it, interfacing with pinmame.

It's still got a long ways to go, but being able to read/load FP table files is HUGE.
