How come not matter what settings i use - I can not get 'colour' versions of SAM Stern tables.  I can change the 'basic' colour but nothing else.

That is correct. PinMAME only supports color for 4 shade DMds.  The newer Stern machines are 16 shade.  You can select the color of your choice and you will get 16 shades of that.

Ran into another problem. Sometimes when starting a table through PinballX the DMD doesnt display, have to exit and restart, so far it seems to happen on Who Dunnit? and 24 the most. 95% of the time it loads perfect but sometimes have to exit and restart table.

 

Seem to have fixed the issue by removing the DMD videos.

Tom found a memory leak with the pinDMD.dll if sending video too fast which he thinks is the cause of this problem. Latest version of pinballx should correct it. (and I will look into the memory leak problem)

I have the same problem, from time to time.

Normally it is enough to simply press F3 to restart the B2S Backglass Server. That restarts the DMD, too. It's much faster than exit the table and come back in again.

I got my DMD 3 couple days ago. The package was damaged in the mail but the device itself looks to be ok. However! I can't get it to work. I'm running windows 10 and I'm unable to install drivers for it. When I plug the device I can hear the bling sound and new device is added to comports USB Serial device (COM7). But when I try to install drivers it says no can dosville :|

 

Windows 10 is in test mode but that doesn't help. Any ideas what to try next

Have you tried running the dpinsta.exe files? (for correct cpu type)

With windows in test mode (following exact instructions in the install guide) it will not have a problem with unsigned drivers

Yes, I first tried to follow the method in the guide pdf - no luck with that one

Looks like its installed a default driver for you. Find the comport in device manager and right click uninstall drivers. Then run the dxinst.exe to force on the pinDMD drivers

Tried that too already. It'll give the same warning as in screenshot above again :|

Its saying no device present is the pinDMD3 plugged into the pc and powered?

Yes, it's plugged in and powered. I can see it cycling through the colour palette. I tried few different USB ports too but with no success.

What is the comport windows is assigning it called?

If all fails we can hardcode a .ini file to use that comport number but rather not go down that route.


Can you try pulling the Ethernet cable. Unstall the comport again (so its removed) restart pc with pinDMD plugged in / turned on. Try running dpinst again.

Thanks for helping me Russ! Unfortunately it still fails to find the device. It is assigned to port 7 (USB Serial Device COM7).

 

Like I said earlier the package was damaged in transport.

Do you think the problem is in Windows and there isn't anything broken with the DMD (It looks good and bright for my eyes at least)

Its a windows 10 driver problem if the board was damaged the pc would not even see it. Yeah one or two had a bit if a rough time by the sounds of it

Just to get you up an running while we try and figure out why windows 10 is playing up. If you download this file

Set debug to 0. Set log_frames to 0 and under debug add "comport=COM7". Add this file next to pinDMD.dll


pinDMD3 just installs it self as a comport serial device only difference between the driver windows has assigned and the pinDMD3 driver ini is the pinDMD3 one adds some text to the port name so the .dll can find the comport by it self. But we can override all that using the .ini
