I would have felt better about this idea....if it wasn't branded with the end-state ultimatum...

Don't get me wrong... I get it... he puts in a tonne of time making these tables. More than 98% of the people out there will ever know. I know better than probably anybody, because I need to reverse engineer those tables to add DOFLinx / SSF / PuP to them. So I get him wanting others to help out to spread the word instead of him taking time to do that. He said himself he's not the most sociable guy there is. I also get that he wants some kind of feedback on his work on YT when he sees other channels related to VP that do very little, if any work to create anything getting way more views. My channel only thrives because of the work I do in sharing links to my videos in various sites and FB groups.... and also the tutorials I do.

If he wants more people to see his channel...then he really needs to NAME the channel SLAM's Pinball Emporium to match his site.

In addition to his editorials, which at this point are humorous, his work does not get recognition for one very simple reason: Future Pinball. He is swimming upstream and does not want to quit and move to VP. There is no mystery here... he could very well embrace VPX, originals, and PUP and make some of those “never seem in Pinball” ideas work in VP... and stop blaming it on VPM as a restriction to creativity. There is work hard, and work smart... also, teasing to share tables and rarely do does not seem to create the effect he is looking for.

He's an expert at FP table creation, so he's hardly swimming upstream or if he is he finds it inspirimg...us FP geeks are happy to have him :)

Rav just added Ball and Flipper Shadows to BAM menu as a new option in a beta version so that will make SLAMs stuff even better

Sorry but I cannot disagree more with this statement, and one that is too often said and actually sounds more and more elitist to me the more I read it.  Yes I love VP, (my favorite table is Attack from Mars) but VP also has it's flaws.  Not everything has to be in VP only to be acceptable.  To say that he swims upstream is humorous indeed.  A software that he knows, is comfortable in and knows it's flaws, bugs, limitations and how to work around them.

I do not spit on other pinball software, nor insult someone else's work ethic, aka "Working Hard but not smart".  I am perfectly fine continuing using Future Pinball with BAM.

also, teasing to share tables and rarely do does not seem to create the effect he is looking for.

Well, that is true but he is currently doing the opposite at the moment.  Because of this, I will continue to support him and enjoy his releases for as long as this will last.  He is doing this for free after all, so nobody has a right to complain how many he releases nor for how long he remains active imo.

Quick update from Slam:

** Quick update before I sod off to bed.  I was just about to release Xenon when another great idea popped into my head so I had to put it into the game...a unique feature never seen in pinball before (AFAIK).  it's actually a variation of something I created in Iron Man, only more fleshed out.  Sorry about the delay but it's worth it.  Xenon and Flash Gordon will be ready for download tomorrow **

You miss understood me. He is certainly an expert on FP, but now he is on a mission of recognition (ie get YouTube likes), and FP will just not give him the numbers. Moving to a more popular platform, one that has not been left for dead, would serve him better.

In any case, this is my last note on the subject as folks are starting to get a bit emotional... cheers.

You miss understood me. He is certainly an expert on FP, but now he is on a mission of recognition (ie get YouTube likes). With that goal, programming in FP will be much harder than doing so on a platform that is not left for dead.

In any case, this is my last note on the subject as folks are starting to get a bit emotional... cheers.

I like your gracious demeanor, thanks.
Are you meaning by promoting his tables he may be inspiring people to take up programming in FP ?

My understanding through people like Shiva (AKA blue), who I think is one of the early contributors to vp and virtual pinball , that FP is actually a pretty good place to start coding and table creating, especially on original non ROM - based tables.

So with vpx and BAM-FP it should be "both/and" not "either/or"

If you understand what Ravarcade can do, you will see FP is far from dead.

BAM integrates with FP , it is no longer an "add on" and FP clearly doesn't require the original author to move forward, but admittedly having the source code would be nice.

If you play one of SLAMs new tables, I think you will see FP in many ways is improving and has changed for the better.
Hopefully this will gradually melt people's preconceptions.

SLAM is implementing more BAM features than anyone else...but it has many more features that haven't been explored yet.

Just as an example BAM allows scriptable lighting effects, 3d model animations , scriptable camera views, normal maps to name a few. BAM can monitor ball physics in real time and these parameters can be used to code unlimited creative table events ...

Cheers

I wonder if the Future Pinballers, ever actively told people just how bad Visual Pinball was, and discouraged others from using it to build tables, back when FP was better than VP?

Future Pinball was way better than VP8. And VP9's physics weren't exactly ground breaking. And which pinball program had VR first? Which one looked more 3D even without VR? Which one was able to play video? PupPlayer wasn't always around. Future Pinball mostly led the way in all those areas, and that is a fact.

Now that VPX is leading in most areas, are we to now shun all other virtual pinball simulations?

Do we actively brow beat anyone who even talks about using Future Pinball, or makes FP tables?

Future Pinball is not going to go away, no matter how many people discourage its usage, or tell us just how bad it is.

There are people actively working to make Future Pinball and FP Tables even better than before.

Is wanting subscribers on YouTube any different than people uploading tables only to Facebook to get Likes?

I think we all should show a little more respect, as Future Pinball has earned its place in the totem pole of Pinball Simulation.

Like it or not. Future Pinball is an important part of this Virtual Pinball community.

Even though VP and FP are seperate Pinball programs, we are all in this together.

Carry on.

With all due respect... many would say the same about VPX as well. Does that make them right? No. Does it make them wrong? No. It's all subjective to what the user likes. So what?

Bottom line is.... if someone likes or enjoys Future Pinball.... doesn't make them wrong for promoting it or wanting to improve it. It's clearly not going away, and it's definitely not dead.

It's certainly not hurting the VPX community in anyway. In fact FP has helped the VPX community WAY more than many out there want to admit.

Do you go on to Zen's FX3 forums to tell them their program isn't as good a VPX...or is not pinball? Do you go onto Zaccaria Pinball's support threads? Do you go on to GoPinball's forums to "right the wrong of the injustices of people claiming FP is great and they love it".

Why anyone (this not aimed at you are anyone in particular, just in general), who is determined to not like FP no matter what would even bother to read or post in FP topics is beyond me. This is the very attitude that drives people AWAY from places like vpforums.... even of they like both VPX and FP.

I think both Gimli and Xenonph summed it up very nicely. Let us have our fun.

Carry On.

If by that you mean "VP only" specific topics and posts, or VP tables downloads,etc... that's fair.

I'll be the first to admit, that sometimes I bring up a FP reference on occasion in a VP topic and it was probably not needed (or wanted).

I certainly won't post about my new Jaws Ultimate Pro 1.06 DOFLinx / Pup-pack update in the VPX Jaws thread (I'm testing a new update to the VPX version as we speak).

In a general topic like Front-ends, or for a FP to VPX conversion topic for example....well I will post something if it's helpful (like I did with Javier and his Goonies conversion WIP).

I started as a FP fanboy years ago...and I still love it...and I am super stoked about the many recent changes that allow me to update many classic FP tables to look and play so much better than they used to...and in a way that I will enjoy.

Thank god I opened up to other emulators and I didn't just stick to FP....as I would have missed out on some truly stunning VPX experiences out there....and it wouldn't have led me to DOF for VPX, SSF, PuP, DOFLinx, etc.

You obviously are passionate about pinball so please post but why not step into the team process a little more instead cat calling from the balcony like those old crumudgeons on the muppets :)

Truth be told, I am an old crumudgeon , whatever that is...

I will tell you...if there is someone who contributes a lot on the VPX side... it's him. Anyone who enjoys SSF can attest to that.

Moving onward though... I'm REALLY liking Ravarcade's automatic Ball and Flipper shadows for all tables. Sounds like a simple thing...but combined with a table updated to newer BAM standards (not using older methods of multiple playfield surfaces, so you can see reflections, etc again), it really makes the table not only look much better...but it doesn't have that old floaty ball look either. Using a better Ball texture, shadows, and newer (heavier gravity) physics really makes a huge difference.

Gimli has shown many proofs of concept using new features of BAM that we haven't seen much of... it's just a matter of time before they are understood better and used to do some cool stuff!
