Do you think plywood is better than MDF for cabinet built ?

Pro: Plywood is lighter, less damage "fumes" when cutting

Con: More difficult "straight" cuts or less malleable, need sanding for better "look"

IMO it's just preference.

Do you think plywood is better than MDF for cabinet built ?

I think you can go either way and get good results, but for what it's worth, I went with plywood, and I'm very happy with the end product.

One data point that might or might not matter to you is that the real Williams and Bally machines from the 80s and 90s had plywood cabinets.  If you're super compulsive about authenticity, that might tip things toward plywood, but I'm not sure anyone would be able to tell the difference once you have it assembled.

Plywood has a considerable weight advantage.  That's not insignificant; these beasts are heavy enough as it is.

I think MDF is cheaper, especially compared to a high-quality 3/4" plywood with a good veneer.  That difference won't amount to a major fraction of the overall build cost, though.

The main reason I went with plywood is just that it's what the VirtuaPin flat pack uses.  If MDF had been the only option for a pre-cut kit, I'm sure I could have lived with that.  But in the end I'm really glad they use plywood - the finished product is really nice and feels very authentic.  And  it would have been a *lot* harder to wrestle the cabinet around in the build process if it weighed twice as much. :)

Thank you both.  I built couple years ago a Arcade cabinet in MDF.  It's very very heavy.  My choice is made, I will use plywood.  I will save money other place :)

Thanks again.

I can agree with your comments about materials. My arcadecab is made in MDF, it looks good an easy to work with, but weight a TON!!!
So for the pincab, we did go for plywood.

Yesterday we did some woodwork, and now all the pieces is done for three pincabs! :)

Hey,

Three pincabs waiting to be born!! :otvclap:

Waiting to see these builds!

Any news of the solenoid testing? I got 7 Siemens contactors, but for this price i should order the missing ones from china for the complete set.

Should be good to mix them, no?

Thank you  for all the infos.

We have to wait to order the solenoids until we tested them inside the boxes, just to hear how they sound.
I think it can be a great idea to mix contactors and solenoids....they sound different, and so do flippers, slingshots and bumpers aswell! :D

I only have 8, I will buy 2 more for full DOF, I can buy Siemens from as low as $10 to $15 each, but I think I will buy 2 of those chinese ones and use them for the flippers :D

But meanwhile I'll be using different "materials" between the solenoids and the wood ... just to give them some "characters"

Oh and I found some with a more aggressive power N

I did some tests with these solenoids inside my arcade cabinet, and to me they sound very good. I'm no expert when it comes to how pinball machines sound, but for the price they are hard to beat :) Im going to be using them in my cab. Damn i thought 7 solenoids was enough, 2 for flippers, 2 for slingshots and 3 for bumpers and what are the remaining 3 used for?

10 will be a firework ;-)

Should be good to mix, as well as different surfaces to the contactors. Thanks to the location pic as well.
