What MAME games are you planning on playing in a vertical orientation?
I had the same idea awhile back, and cut my panel similarly, then realized I would
never play fighters on a vertical cab... thus I only needed to drill 4 buttons, max,
per player (could probably stay happy even with 3).

Good work so far, looking forward to seeing the rest...

Two player games like fighting games, or landscape orientated games like Joust, Robotron etc will be programmed to appear on the backglass (display 2) screen. Vertical games like pac man & donkey kong will be played on the portrait orientated (display 1) screen.

I only wish the Daphne emu could be tweaked to display LD games on the second screen but the only thing Daphne can do so far is to switch to opengl rendering and rotate the screen so it appears (aspect correct) on display 1.

Maybe you can make your second screen the playfield and your first screen the backglass... kinda backwards I know, but can Hyperpin / UltraVP handle it?

That would just make a mess of my Hyperpin setup which is the primary purpose of the cab anyways. Besides, making the landscape orientated games appear on the 4x3 backglass display is waaaaaaaaaaay easier than doing what you are suggesting.

The weather is almost co-operating with me so I was able to sand the first coat of varnish and apply the second coat right before a rain-shower hit.

Depending on the heat & humidity today, if the second coat of varnish feels cured enough, I may add the third coat of varnish sometime around 8.pm EDT.

Best Regards,
Todd.

Really like the look that the stains gives to it! good.gif Gives me ideas for my cab in the near future... haha!

Those cut out letters that they sell in hardware or craft stores stained a lighter color would be neat for the side art.

Actually, there won't be any words on the sides. I have an idea to hand paint two things, one on each side, that are from a movie. The whole cabinet is actually based on this movie. The very last thing to be done will be the painting of those two items on the sides.

Sorry for being vague, but I'm trying to keep it a kind of secret until the end. Not because it's anything special or outrageous. I just believe in keeping a few surprises until the very end.

Best Regards,
Todd.

After spending the day in not-so-sunny downtown Toronto yesterday, I moved the cab indoors and began working on some of the buttons etc...

Dude, that is awesome. You're killing me by holding out on the theme name but I can appreciate you wanting to keep it secret till then end. Keep the updates coming.
Having a cabinet to play full screen pins is awesome! Check out my mini pin cab here on VPForums.

Yes, more pictures will follow - and yes again, it was pictures of Grizz's pinball cab with the MAME controls on it that inspired me to add them to my pin-cab. tup.gif

Last night I was able to get the monitor braces and the front door installed. Tonight I'll work on where to setup the PSU and the PC motherboard. Once I have the motherboard in place, I will have to fabricate a "back brace" for the adapter cards. (video cards and Creative X-Fi sound card)

Looking great Todd - I love the 2-in-1 Pincab/Mamecab concept. That rustic Sinbad table of yours is going to look great in this woodgrained cabinet. Best of luck with the rest of the build.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! Even though I'm kind of worried about the FPLaunch/Hyperpin/VP key mapping bugs I've read about, I'm continuing to make progress.

I have installed the mainboard and the PSU last night. I also stuck the adapter cards in so that I can measure and cut a piece of wood to act as the brace that the adapter cards metal 'L' bracket will screw down into. That way the video cards, sound card, and wifi card won't be flopping around when the pin-cab is nudged.

Todd.

Japanese button layout and an american baseball bat for a joystick. I prefer the JPN button layout, nice. I think yours is a little off but looks nice smile.gif

smile.gif

american button layout = 3 buttons in a straight line and finger cramps
Japanese layout = curved button layout and a ball top stick.
