Amazon Hunt

Version: 1.0.1
Category: VPinMAME 9.x Recreations

Author(s): rob046, Destruk

Description:
v1.01 fixed ball release gate some were having issues with. Use included nvram for optimal default settings. Table NOT angle independent. This table uses the JP & Noah nudge system, & it WILL TILT! Best played at 1600x1200.
Amazon Hunt, Gottlieb 1983

MPU: Gottlieb System 80A
Type: Solid State Electronic (SS)
Production: 1,515 units (confirmed)
Notable Features: Compare playfield layout to Gottlieb's 1975 'Fast Draw'.
Design by: Ed Krynski
Art by: Larry Day
IPDB Rating: 8/10

A very interesting table. Hard to find in real life, especially in the united states. Layout is simple yet still fun, based off an EM game, but has a deeper rule set. Bottom half of the table is more controlled & requires skill with the drop targets. Aim carefully or pay dearly!

Top half of the table is a bit more complex & chaotic, like a jungle!
Good, fitting sounds, a colorful artistic playfield & backglass, a generous flipper gap & no nonsense gameplay combine to make this a solid & challenging all around game.

As for this recreation. Started building this table in '06, so parts of it were getting outdated & maybe still are. I updated what I could to make it at least respectable for VP9 without spending a ton of time on updating it. Maybe I'll spend more time with it in the future.

Keep "Render Shadows" enabled because parts of the table were rendered with them enabled.
Table is NOT angle independent.
Use nvram included in zip for optimal default game settings.
There are a few ball images included to choose from.
This table WILL tilt if you nudge any more than you would in real life, so be careful!

A big thanks to joke0 who helped me a lot at the time of building by providing me with a manual, so that for the 1st time this table could work properly & get all the lamps, switch, & solenoid numbers correctly identified.
So if the table seems to play a bit different than older versions, that would be why.

joke0 also provided some gameplay advice & was familiar with the real table & did playtesting.
Hopefully the conversion to VP9 didn't throw off gameplay/physics too much. & I'm still open to feedback on anyone else who has knocked this old pin around a few times.

Thanks to destruk, as parts of the code are based off his original table & I also liked & kept his displays.
Also thanks to Nico193 & LuvThatApex for their previous work with Amazon Hunt.
Thanks to JP & Noah as I added in their VP9 nudging system last minute, now its hard to cheat on nudging & this is gonna be a tough table! More realistic gameplay!
& thanks to Inkochnito for his great work on creating a dip switch menu for this table & hundreds of others!

It seems Gate1 is a tad too short to allow the ball through. Changing its length to 70 worked for me.

2,257,690 was my hiscore on my first play through. Changing the length of Gate1 to 70 worked for me Noah but I still had to nudge the Ball out of the gate to get it in the plunger lane.

Thanks Rob046, it plays great.

Thanks.

It's not in the script. Open the table & look on the left and click on select, then look for gate1, click on it & on the right you will see where to change the length.

Its fixed & updated. Thanks for the feedback, guys.
VP is tough in that I must have launched this table 100 times in VP9 & never had a ball getting stuck issue. So how in the world are other people having issues?
I'm using the same VP9 as everybody else, I'm sure.
I'd really like some answers as to how that can happen, just weird.

Also, as I updated the table I see I got my first rating! 1 out of 5 from Tripcore (a guy who rates but has never posted on the forum a day in his life! Come on, a little feedback on why?). Could of been unhappy about the gate problem, but again, it never happened here & I couldn't have predicted that people were gonna have problems with it. I can only work with & tweak things that I see, so, oh well, fixed it quickly & hope there is no other issues. People can rate 1 out of 5, but if you do so I'd really appreciate you following it up with a short explanation of what is the problem (which maybe did happen) or if its a preference thing, then what I could do better.
I'm open to feedback to make tables better. & I admit I may be rusty with some things as its been a while since I released a table, so let me hear it if you have comments.

I'll fix & upload. But I really wish I knew how this can only happen to some people & not others, that one is gonna drive me nutty!

yeah even though i changed it to 70 i still have to nudge it out. Though 70 was just fine for Noah. I think maybe it has to do with Resolution settings????

You are probably right about resolution, because 70 worked perfect for me. I play all tables in 1024 x 768 resolution.

Did you update to latest version? 1.01?
Cuz that sucker should be popping out of there easily now. I both moved the kicker (ball release) to a better spot (so that it fired out cleaner & quicker) as well as lengthen the gate to 70.
It should be good now.
Could screen resolution really impact physics?
Is anybody playing in 1600x1200 (my rez & the rez I built table at) getting the ball stuck? Anybody not on that rez getting stuck? Just curious.

Maybe beginners luck! I don't think even my high score is much more than that, all time. Though I guess I'm not always playing to beat my high score. You using the nvram included? I think due to the tables nature, I've found that I may have a real good game followed by like 4 bad ones.
A little tip. Especially in 3 ball where each ball is very important, it also makes the extra ball that much more important. If you notice you have 2 of the ABC rollovers lit, that might be a good time to take focus off the drop targets & go after that extra ball. If at the lower part of the table see if you can flip or nudge into the desired lane somehow.
Sure, 3 balls may seem kinda harsh to some, it may seem like this table should be 5 ball. But a comment from people who have played the table, they said what I pretty much just did. 3 ball is nicer (& is the manual default I think) & makes the EB more valuable for high scores than in 5 ball.

I havent updated to 1.01 yet i'll do that now. Maybe it was beginners luck but the extra ball is pretty easy to get on this table I got 2 of them on my first play, i haven't played it since though. I'm using the NVRAM included with the file. I hate 5 ball tables, a good pinball player only needs 1. I'm glad this table is not 5 balls.
