File Name: Playboy 35th Anniversary (Data East 1989)

File Submitter: jpsalas

File Submitted: 21 Mar 2023

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas
Manufacturer: Data East
Year: 1989
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

Based on the table by Data East from 1989

Thanks to Pancake for the plastic scans.
Thanks to HiRez00 for the pictures of the real table and for the wheel image.

The playfield's layout should be as close as I can make it to the real one, even if I made the playfield myself by redrawing and copying/pasting a lot :)

Notes about the table:

* The RAMPS: they are blue by default, but use the F12 menu to change the color. I simply don't like plastic ramps, I feel they make the tables feel cheap :)

* The Darker Levels: again, use the F12 menu to select the dark level you prefer. There are 10 normal levels and 10 warmer levels, if you prefer that look.

* There is a nice directb2s at vpuniverse made by Wildman.

Enjoy! :)

Another stunner thankyou JP... never fails to amaze me how you manage to make these high quality tables so well optimised for low end PCs and minimal download.

I love all the little arcade game sounds in the gameplay as well, I think I recognise Pacman and Galaxian or Galaga in there, what other sounds do people recognise?

Well after a few games I must say this must be the most brutal table you have ever released. I also noticed some weird stuff but that is not something to blame on you. I think the stuff on the displays is emulated too slow. Noticable during bonus during the sequence is that sound that hits at each bonus multilpier and the text moves much too slow. This makes the sequence fall into silence for a long time. And at game over song the text doesn't follow the song because it shows the lyrics to the song

I'll need to test the table on my portable as I didn't noticed those slow downs. But I did notice the table took quite a long time to eject a new ball, I thought maybe the emulation isn't perfect for this game, but all the Data East tables I have tried before were perfect :)

I'll do some more testing tomorrow. I just wanted to upload the table so many of you could play it and report any findings :)

Yes that was also my first thought. But no problem because it plays good. Fast and brutal but good. I must say I am playing on 64 bit versions since last week but I doubt this is why it's a bit slow in the emulation

I'm seeing the score refresh very slowly on the segment display, like a downwards wipe on the score about 2 times a second but only for the score itself, not the other info on the display (this is in desktop mode). Edit: Seems the real machine refreshes the score in a similar way.

Also noticed the slow ball ejection after ball loss, although this video seems to show something similar however I notice that in your table the tune that plays before the next ball release is cut off after about a second or two and should play for longer:

I'm afraid I can't do much about the slow count down of the bonus and the release of the next ball, as that is done in the emulation in vpinmame. There is no script involved in that. I have tried all the vpinmame versions available for download and they all do the same. The oldest available vpinmame is from 2015, so I haven't tried any version older than that. I have also tried changing the vpinmame timers, but there is no difference.

The table is maybe a little to fast and in the next revision I'll reduce a little the table's slope, but I guess it will still be brutal :)

This table looks nice (especially with the lighting turned down a bit) and plays well despite intermittent problems with the left kickback.

One area of attention is the mechanical sound though; I think this table is let down by the use of vanilla VP sound effects for the flippers and bumpers.

This is easy to change in the editor, but could leave a sub-optimal impression on players that are new to Visual Pinball.

Thank you so much JP for another beautiful table.

Some "copy paste thing", the lights connected to the solenoids are wired as Flashers, instead they are lamps.

Thank you very much JP again a great table. To change the color of the ramps I use the "Q" key. Have a good day and thanks again. :dblthumb:

I haven't noticed as much of a delay that others have been experiencing. Slightly, maybe for the ball release, but I use this time to admire the beauty of the table and the effort that went into creating it! The table plays fast, so the brief 'rest period' between each ball is a welcome relief.

I consider it an honor to have had a small part in just the collaboration with you JP!

BTW, in cycling through the color options for the ramps, the red really stands out in my opinion and compliments the atmosphere of my game room. So additional kudos for the ambient options.

Cheers!

UPDATE

1.0.1 Updated 22.03.2023
- adjusted tables inclination to slow down a little the table.
- adjusted the scores in the desktop version so you can see the off digits too.
- Thanks to Hirezz00 for the new apron cards, nvram with higher ROM volume and new wheel.
- Changed to my other set of mechanical sounds
- adjusted a little the kickback, maybe it behaves a little better now.

And that should be the needed update. I don't think the table will need any more updates :)

Thank you so much JP for another beautiful table.

Some "copy paste thing", the lights connected to the solenoids are wired as Flashers, instead they are lamps.

Mmmm, could you explain that a little better, I don't understand what you mean. I know some of the solenoid flashers are lamps, but they are right in the script

You do not have write access to the USER folder inside the VP folder. That happens mostly when you install VP in the C:Program Files folder.

You may try to give yourself access to the folder.
