File Name: Whirlwind 4K

File Submitter: flupper1

File Submitted: 19 Dec 2021

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): Flupper
Rothbauerw
Fleep
Rawd & 3rdaxis
Leojreimroc
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1990
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

Full rebuild of WhirlWind, all prerendered for 4K resolution and VR.
warning: some flashing lights sequences may affect photosensitive viewers

Base version VP9 of Herweh used and some bits and pieces from Walamab's Whirlwind for VPX
Flupper: 3d models, 3d inserts, new flipper bats, photoshop work, rendering, lighting, all scripting related to visuals (except VR)
Rothbauerw: all the physics coding and objects
Fleep: sound engineering, sound scripting
Clark Kent: scanned playfield
Blackmoor: owns actual machine, sound recordings, scanned plastics, reference images, reference videos for the lighting, testing
Cosmic80 for cleaning plastics textures for previous vp9 version
Wrd1972: reference photos for ramps placement
Leojreimroc: scoring displays and backglass lighting in VR
Rawd & 3rdaxis: VR room, cabinet, backbox, topper and VR script added
VPW: testing the prerelease beta

For best performance use these settings:
- use 10.6.2 or later
- no brute-force 4x SSAA (is not necessary), but quality SMAA
- exclusive full screen with 1 for FPS limiter and 1 for maximum prerendered frames
- Ambient occlusion, ball trails, screen space reflections all off
Other remarks:
- the magnasave buttons change the LUT, see script options
- it is advised to keep the POV settings as they are in the download for the full screen mode; all textures have been prerendered for this POV
- don't use day/night slider (leave on table default), it does not do much, use LUT to change contrast/brightness
- If you are experiencing thick lines around the inserts in VR, make sure to have the latest VPVR Shaders from November 2021

This is going to break the internet.  Man...been following this for what...10?  15 years? :D  Really fantastic work here.  Just a dedication to the cause and a recreation beyond recreations.  We have VPE on the fringe and we still have artists pumping out VPx love.  We love this hobby and thank you to ALL the artists.  Geez, are we lucky.

Blackmoor really gave you some great images and audio to make this table pop! Glad this project came out great! Good job! :D

I could have been smart, but I never learned anything by being smart!

Looks incredible thankyou. Unfortunately brought my old laptop's i7 GT650m to it's knees at 1080p (nudging around 50fps on minimal detail, I had to drop the resolution a bit to get it to play at 60fps).... still waiting on Santa to bring me an updated PC but not looking good.

Only 50fps he says

my laptop plays it at 30 fps

at 720p

and that is after changing the tables default graphics settings to the lowest possible

Incredible flupper. Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much! And also everyone else who contributed.

Also thanks for the performance tips. In general most newer tables have started to slow down for me so this is probably applicable to other tables as well.

Epic :)  I can see where all the time went. Thanks Mate and extra thanks for keeping it mainstream with 10.6 - I didn't think I'd be getting to enjoy this beauty just yet. Plays silky smooth on my old rig.

We should meet up and run both our laptops in SLI and we might crack 60fps between us. Since I'm in Australia and you are in the US, let's say we meet in Hawaii. Haha.

Edit: Oh...I just discovered that this table has it's post-proc AA set to Quality_SMAA instead of default. That's why I was having a hard time getting it up to 60FPS as I was trying to adjust AA in Preferences/Video/Graphics options, not realising that my AA changes were not actually sticking. Switching off the SMAA in the table setttings itself allowed me to get it up to 60FPS in 1080p.

WOW :)

But i have to ask: i think i also will get some Performane - Issues; if i do a DownScaling on some Big Images, that would be the Solution ?

I would suggest to play it first and report back if you have issues. Scaling down images should only help if you run out of gpu memory. And see the tip above concerning the SMAA setting in the table defaults.

Texture sizes should be no issue, it loads on my laptop

Other settings he has over ridden with the table properties, you may have to change, IF you have issues
Like on my laptop it overrides a lot of the stuff i have to have turned off to run at all

Like SMAA and occlusion, i had to flip both back to off in the table properties

Yes it doesnt look as nice, but on my laptop NOTHING looks as nice LOL

I put in the table overrides to give most people the best performance, so no ambient occlusion and only SMAA, I deactivated 4x AA (which is very performance intensive and you really dont need it on whirlwind, since all textures are pre-AAed). For low end machines even SMAA is too much it seems.

It is surprising that with all these baking times, the table has not melted .....

looks like the attract is synced to the balance and bpm of the music

spinning disks have very little influence on the trajectory of the ball ; maybe it should spin a lot faster
