File Name: Polar Explorer (Taito do Brasil 1983)

File Submitter: jpsalas

File Submitted: 12 Sep 2018

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas
Manufacturer: Taito
Year: 1983
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

Based on the Taito table from 1983 .
Thanks to Carlos Guizzo for all the resources.
Also thanks to 32assassin for making also a VPX version of this table, from were I "borrowed" the wire ramp on the upper floor :)

I built the table from scratch, as always. In this table I have used some primitives on top of the flippers to gave them a nice shape. The normal VPX flippers are still visible and if you want to change their color or the rubber color then you can do it in the editor, no need to change images.

Also if you prefer black rubbers instead of white, then simply load the table in the editor, press SHIFT CTRL E, sort all the objects by type, select all the rubbers and change their material to Rubber Black. Save the table, and you'll have black rubbers.

Thank you again JP and Carlos. I was a bit surprised seeing this arrive being that it existed already. I'm very happy about it though. Gives me extra possibility to compare the work between you guys and learn from you both by comparison !

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Yes, I know 32assassin did a very nice version. But since I made almost all the Taito tables, I had to do this one too :). The table will always be somehow different, since I build it from scratch, so there will always be some small changes. For example the rubbers have different elasticity, the upper playfield is higher, flippers have different parameters, etc.

While playing I noticed something that I do not know if it is normal at the table or not, if a ball goes to the upper playfield and the lower playfield flipper was activated, it will be raised even when the ball of the upper playfield goes down, so that it returns to normal You have to press the corresponding button of the flipper, I do not know if it will have been understood because my English is bad.

If you want you may explain it in Spanish :)

What I saw in the manual (well, not really a manual, but the list of switches/lights/solenoids), that a switch is triggered (number 53) when the ball goes to the upper playfield, and a solenoid fires and the upper flippers gets activated. But what I didn't found was how or what makes the solenoid to fire again and the upper flippers turn off. During game play, I saw the upper flippers going dead while the ball still was on the upper playfield (maybe it is a timer?). So I made that change of flippers manually, until someone can explain how they work. Until then, the table plays fine like it is :)

Another fantastic recreation from JP! Also great work by Carlos Guizzo and 32assassin! Thank you very much! The table is looking awesome.

I know it wouldn't be original anymore, but would it be possible if someone made a translation of the instruction card and a tutorial of how to switch it, for the non-spanish speakers?

I'm kinda confused about the use of 2 languages anyway, as the words on the playfield are all in english, but some words, like Antartida, are not. But it's on the original also, so it's here as well.

That it's simply something I didn't think about that could happen :) I'll fix it in the next revision. There is always a "next revision" :) But as you said it doesn't disturb the gameplay.

Esto es simplemente algo que no se me ocurrió que podría pasar. Lo arreglo en la próxima versión. Ya que siempre hay una "próxima versión" :) pero como dijiste no molesta el juego.

Thank you JP I was just curious, because I never played this table in real life.
The table is very good, I'm playing it since yesterday.

UPDATE

1.0.1 Updated 15.09.2018
- fixed the upper playfield, now using the solenoid, which actually has a timer. I thought there was something wrong and in version 1.0.0 I disabled it. But there is a timer! Then the solenoid was always working fine :)

PS: I'll ask Carlos for a translation in English of the rules card.

UPDATE:

1.0.2 Updated 17.09.2018
- fixed a ball stuck possibility when shooting for the upper playfield.
- Added the rules in English to the table info. Thanks Carlos & Bord for the translation.

I also added a replacement "plastics" image with the English card in case you prefer that, jammit :)
