Not sure if I am posting in the right place, and please forgive me if this has been answered before.  My installation of VPX seems to have gone smooth and I've downloaded a few tables.  However, when I launch a table it will load just fine, and I can use the coin in buttons but I can't "start."  It was originally mapped to "1," but I have since mapped it several other places and still can't get tables to start.  I loaded the nudge table to see if my other keys were working fine and they seem to be.  Can't figure out what the problem is.  Please help!

Hi Steve,

Check in preferences > keys in VP and see what it's currently set to. Make changes there.

Also, many times, when you first start a table using a ROM, you have to press F3 to restart the ROM after first start.

Hope that helps. If not, just let me know.

Thanks for the response Noah.  I have tried remapping the start button in Preferences > Keys several times to no effect.  I have also tried to press F3 at the start of a table to no effect.  I've been scouring the net trying to find any possibility.  I have unselected and reselected run as admin, I've tried multiple tables.  Feeling pretty stuck.

Check preferences > keys to see if you have the start button mapped to two different functions.

Thanks for the response!  In preferences > keys I don't see how I could have the start button mapped to two functions...Under the subheading "Button Assignments" I have the Start button mapped to 1 currently, and not to any external button.  I have tried remapping it to enter, and to arbitrary keys but nothing seems to be working.  Sorry my responses are slow, I have very limited time to work on setting up my system without raising suspicions from my partner for whom I am building this machine!

This may sound silly to you but do you have the ROM for the table? I remember when I was first starting out if I didnt have the ROM the table would usually load correctly but hitting start had no effect at all. The same symptoms as you describe and like you I had no idea what the problem was.
Have you tried playing the table through VPX (the editor)....if youre missing the ROM when you load the table from there it will tell you what rom you are missing to play the table.

Thanks for the response John, I'm reasonably certain that I have the ROMs...I've tried several different tables and seem to get the same behavior from all.  I have them in the pinMame > roms folder, zipped as they were when downloaded.  I have encountered an issue where I had a ROM in the wrong place and I believe the script popped up with an error that the game was not found.  My VPX machine is at home so I won't be able to test things out until I'm done at work for the day but I'll take a look at how things are organized.  I'm considering just starting over from scratch, completely uninstalling and reinstalling.  Maybe something was set up incorrectly from the outset.

Sounds like you are having the same problem I have. I can't start any gottlieb games on my newer windows 10 computer. You know how you can cycle through the game menus (hit 8 or 6 one of those) and eventually you'll get to a place in the rom where it says to install english. I can't get to that point because my rom hangs up and doesnt cycle there. I tried installing the bally 6803 script but no dice. I believe its a windows 10 glitch or I'm just dumb (I hope not!!) cause everything works fine in my windows 8.1 installation. Best part about it is I copied one vp installation to the other. I'm stuck. Been stuck for a few months, scratching my head on this one. If anyone has any info it's appreciated.

Just as a quick update, EM machines seem to play just fine but I still haven't been able to play any table that requires a rom yet.  I feel like maybe I'm going crazy and it's just some simple, obvious thing that I'm missing.  I just ordered an SSD, which I had been planning on using as a clone of my current drive, but now I'm thinking if I can't get this up and running I might just do a completely clean install and start over from scratch.  Not my first choice, but gotta do what I gotta do.  Anybody have any more ideas?

From rom based games, are the lights animating? When you insert coin does the coin count increase?

Make sure you are using the proper rom. The error normally tells you what rom the table wants. Do not unzip the rom. Place it in the Pinmame rom folder

Make sure Force exclusive Fullscreen mode is unticked if using VPX did it for me.

Usually if a table requires a rom, it will have a rom download link on the tables download page.

You can find link to roms, on right side of table download page. (As seen in pic.)

You must place these zipped roms in your "roms" folder located where Visual Pinball is installed.
