This is the former Time Out build. But BorgDog convinced me to restore the JP theme. Glad he did.

 

Got the donor cab off a great Pinsider named Greg, and bought the missing Gottlieb System 1 hardware (lockdown, mech, shooter, and coin door) from Hillbilly Pinball. going to use as much native hardware as possible.

 

I started thinking I could do for $700. (This all started when I saw Mr. Geneloader's YT video.) But I was wrong. When someone offered to give me a GTX 1060 Founders Edition, the whole thing changed. The Optiplex tower was not compatible. The processor, PSU, GPU, and hard drive all needed to be replaced. So I ended up with ... 

 

Dell Vostro 260 tower, used i5-2500K, new Seasonic 500w PSU. New GTX1060 GPU. Samsung 128GB SSD. 

(One of those) Seiki 39" 4K TV running at 1920x1080 120hz (bummed I can't get 3840 at 120), Element 28" TV for BG, looking for a suitable 15" screen for DMD (the VGA one I had didn't work with the 1060. BG jumped from 28" to 15")

 

This will be an mjr's Pinscape with Rusty's Poor Man's DOF (PMD) cab.

Good luck with the build.  I had one of those Seiki's, and loved it until the back-light blew.  I would consider lowering the back-light strength a bit in hopes it has a positive effect on longevity.  I had a lot of screen blanking following flashing, which could have spelled the demise of mine.

I used Evapo-rust on all hardware, including a complete teardown and rebuild on the coin door. Still need to clean up the wiring harness.

 

I had created Illustrator files of the cab art based on online images for making stencils, but decided to trace all art for accuracy. I'll transfer the pattern onto plastic sheeting and use spray tack. 

 

And I plan to reuse as much hardware as I can, including the original flipper buttons.

Sanded the cab down and started Bondo work. Sanding off the original art was a hit of a downer, felt like I was erasing the history. Uncovered some writing that was painted over.

Also made a new Loading screen for PInballX. I feel like I'm building a time machine. Would love to make it where the current date and the year of the pinball machine would show up in the photo.

Well, I've been busy, just not with my cab. Finally had a good day to haul my power tools outside for a day of work. Trying to keep dust to a minimum in my workshop with components everywhere. Also discovered by 15" DMD LED screen wouldn't work cause it only had VGA. Finally found another 15" Dell with a DVI port at Goodwill for $5. Works great.

 

I wanted to figure out how it all fits before painting. I've got the backbox outfitted BB (no need to decase) and DMD (decased) screens, along with coax speakers. Next, I need to get the framing for a 22" topper screen in place.

 

I also got my 39" TV decased (so, so nervous) and mounted to the plywood "sled" and positioned it in the cab. Fits great. The add-in panel at the back of the TV shows a gap but I lowered it before screwing it in place. Was going to make the screen parallel to the tops of the sides, but changed my mind.

 

Hope to be painting next week with the Joker Poker stencils I made.

 

In the pics, you'll notice subwoofer holes in the back for ROM sounds, and front, pointing to lockdown bar for mech sounds. I'm doing PMD for mech sounds with exciters at the flipper buttons, and subwoofer for added thump. The shelf below the forward subwoofer panel is for amps, or the Pinscape expansion/KL25Z. Not sure which. Trying to plan best position of the KL25Z for nudging effect. The big shelf will be for the computer tower and power distribution for 12v and 5v from a second salvaged PSU.

 

The linear CCD came in and a guy I know is making a 3D print of the holder.  The plunger will go below the start button hole on the front. 

Blue screen = whew!

 

Really happy with how (one of those) 39" Seiki Tvs fits in the JP cab. I mounted it to a large piece of 3/4" ply, mainly to protect the back components and make it easy to tilt up and/or remove. The sled is resting on metal standoffs I scavenged from a old work project. I hope to use the prop stick that came with the JP.

A little progress. After seeing the game list with 4 flipper buttons , I decided to change course and go with that below the side rail, worried I'd mess up my original JP side rails. Drilled the button holes on the front. My GTB coin door has another button I'll use. Then a couple coats of Kilz2 to seal the wood. Hopefully tomorrow: sand and start with the Rustoleum Heirloom

I have to decide how I will add my magna save buttons too. I am not keen on drilling the side rails either,

Rustoleum painters touch heirloom white for cab, black collar. A couple days of curing before stenciling, so I'll work on secondary power supply.

The Gottlieb spatter effect. Used a brush I picked up a dollar store that had longer bristles. Better spatter than a toothbrush, I found.

Looking at getting Gottlieb logo cut out of wood and painted to help fill space under LCD DMD and speakers. Trying to decide if I should paint this panel same as cab with off white paint and black spatter, then do logo in joker poker red. Or paint black to make the back box face all black, and do offwhite logo.

Stenciling requires more finesse than I thought. Looks like I'll be doing some touch up before a shot of clear coat. Sigh.

My paint job had a lot of bleed under my stencils. Maybe shouldn't have been so cheap and bought good ones, and gotten a redder red. I was going to do over, but after sleeping on it, decided to let it ride for the time being. Maybe one day, I'll sand down and do again. Cab probably going between wall and another pin, so art wouldn't be overly noticeable anyway. But, again, the lousy positioning of the black stencil on the left side, hits my "how could I be so stupid" nerve.

 

Do love how my Start button is in the heart!

Cutoff part of the Joker Poker PF bracket to support propping up the PF TV when working inside. Used a scrap of wood to get both sides aligned.

70s GTB coin door is awesome. the coin door button will be "coin in." Will be drilling for plunger in area of the diamond.

Remote CPU button in original power switch location.

Not that I haven't made enough suggestions on this build but I would use the red button on the coin door for start as that was it's original use, and rig up a switch so the coin return plunger triggers it for the "coin in".  I used a older Gottlieb 70s coin door that has 3 coin return plunger rods and have those setup for exit, coin, and launch (in case my plunger launch malfunctions or doesn't work on a particular table), and I also have a red start button.  I think I did have to rig up a mounting bracket for the switches though.

I like your suggestions. Always helpful. I was thinking that start and exit should be close to each other for PBX. Hmmm.
