I am getting ready to build my cabinet and after some searching, it seems that some people have good luck with Hyperpin and some have good luck with PinballX.  It also seems that some people have some nasty problems, while others do not.  It is nice that PinballX is actively maintained but it still seems to have a lot of quirks from what I have read.  Is it just "one of those things" or does the OS choice cause issues? I am hoping some of you can tell me your experiences between the frontends and OS of choice.  I am on the fence between Hyperpin and PinballX.  I will be running one of them on WIndows 7 64-bit, just not sure which one. Which one seems to have less problems?  Or should I go with 32-bit or even downgrade to Windows XP?

Thanks!

Rich

you gotta come over and I'll tell you and show you everthing you'll need to know about VP cabs.  I really have spent hundreds of hours on cab related hardware/software tweaking.  Although leaning is part of the fun, but I have wasted countless time on old technologies (xp vs win7, mobos, power, lcds,

Slydog43, this weekend is shot for me, big race weekend!  Maybe sometime next week though!  :)  I plan to start the cabinet build next week so it would be good to check out the cabs you got and to pick your brain!

I used to use Hyperpin and it is fine once you get it setup right, but it can take quite a bit to get it running right. I switched over to PinballX because it seemed easier to use and it has been. It is easy to add games, it has great Real DMD interaction and I have not had any focus issues or crashes using it.

I love the look of hyperpin a bit more than pinballx but IMHO Hyperpin seems to work better in win XP while it seems to have slower loading of tables on win 7 and pinballx works great on win7 and ... I have win7 so the decision was made easier for me. There was talk of an update to hyperpin that would fix these Win7 issues but that was over a year so maybe it's coming, maybe it's not.

At any rate, my point is the OS you use probably dictates to some extent the one you want to use.

I've gone through a few builds and am now using Win7-64 and PinballX. I had a lot of focus issues with HyperPin and some problems that I could never work out.

Im using windows7 32 with pinballx no problems at all everything runs smooth.
U only need 64 bit if u have more then 4gb ram into your pc, no vp table need so much memory,
So a pc with win7 and 32 bit and pinbx should do the job.

windows 7 x64 here and switched over to Pinballx a few months back.  Hyperspin kept having a wierd issue where it would lose focus when existing some tables and I could never work out a permanent fix for that.  Pinballx seems much more solid for me.

WinXP and PinballX here... works perfectly.

I used to be a HyperPin user, but switched over to PinballX and never looked back.

Did you do anything special to fix the crash on exit with XP?

PinballX is the way to go if you want future updates and new features. It's also faster, looks better, and is easier to install and maintain.

Crash? I'm not aware of such a problem... can you explain?

I use hyperpin on my arcade cab but have opted for pbx on my pin cab. Pbx is so much quicker and easier to setup, no need to manually rename and place files, just point and click and pbx does it all for you.

It was a known issue at one time. I haven't setup an XP system on a VirtuaPin since January, so I haven't tested PinballX on XP since then. Maybe it's fixed?

I haven't tried out PinballX yet. For me this tutorial about the modified FPlaunch for hyperpin did the trick.

Wow!  I was expecting most people to be on Windows 7 64-bit but was not expecting the landslide for PinballX.  Maybe because I hang on the Hyperspin forums some and so it is my head that I used Hyperspin in my arcade, I should use Hyperpin in my pincab.  I was all set prior to this poll but I am going to set up PinballX and check it out.  Thank you everyone!

I had Hyperpin "running" on my cab, but I was always getting VP/FP crashes and a variety of issues. Running PinballX has fixed at least 95% of the issues I was encountering. I still get the occasional crash, but it's MUCH, much less frequent. I have 249 tables running on my cab now and they run pretty decent as well with a lot less stuttering and slowdown like I was experiencing with Hyperpin.

I've encountered a couple odd menu issues with Future Pinball, but overall PinballX runs much better for me.

I haven't really kept up with PBX does it use FPLaunch as well or is it all handled internally?

I believe it does use FPLaunch. You see the standard FP loading screens.

With VP/VPM the load screens are semi-hidden and all you see is "Loading"

on screen.

For me:

Hyperpin + XP = Great
Hyperpin + Win7 = Slow exiting tables, intermittent focus problems
Hyperpin + Win8 = Slow initial start, but exits tables as fast as XP and no focus issues

Tried PinballX but I absolutely hated the launch menu that pops up when you pick a table. Tom just added one click launch, so I will try it again. Most likely PinballX will become my new front end.
