hi all-
I was wondering if anyone had any tricks for making realistic looking *unlit* insert lights. I've had intermittent luck using stuff like multiply and darken, but would really appreciate feedback from the masters on this one. Thanks!

Not really a master, but on my BK2000 WIP i used unlit inserts (googled and edited with photoshop). On top of that I put the text inserts (also googled). VPX is very good at lighting up unlit insert images. In photoshop I darkened the inserts if necessary with a hue/saturation layer and then decreasing the lightness. I judge the outcome visually, it should look "right".
I used something like this: http://www.pinball.c...age_62362_1.jpg

I tried putting the inserts on a second layer and lighting them with 'bulb' lights under the playfield, just using the material to darken the inserts, and that worked too. No idea what the performance hit is like, though.
Appropriate for rings of inserts like Funhouse, BK2K or Tales from the Crypt since the bulb light from very close inserts can bleed into each other.

It also looks really pretty when the light reflects off the ball

That looks so absurdly good!
