I can't get the music to play, only hear the flippers and ball effects. Turned the volume to max and don't see any additional music / sound files.

Same thing, no sounds other than mechanical sounds.

EDIT: Updated VPx to most recent version, installed ROM L1 (I had L7) and sounds popped up.
