What are some of the hardest games you have ever played. I'm talking games that have kicked your ass over and over again and still kick your ass when you play them again.

Most of the hardest games I have ever played were on the NES and SNES. Now my list isn't in order from hard to hardest, but here are some games that I think were just impossible to complete even w/ a game genie.

1. Battletoads
2. Ninja Gaiden series
3. Castlevainia series
4. Mega Man series
5. Gradius series
6. Zelda II - The Adventure of Link
7. Final Fantasy II (aka Final Fantasy IV in japan)
8. Contra
9. Ghoust N' Goblins series
10. Resident Evil

I know I've played more but I think these 10 rank up there as being some of the most difficult games of all-time.

So what are some of your hardest games you have ever played

For me, and these would force me to get up and walk away for awhile:

Street Fighter 2010
Flashback: The Quest For Identity
Baseball Simulator (You could have a 10 run lead in the first seven innings, then the game would come back and beat you by 10.)
NES Rygar (I hated it because it was NOWHERE near the original)
SNES Samurai Showdown (They made Amakusa HELLA hard to defeat)

The Terminator on NES. I can never get past the underground levels.

Also Trash Panic for PS3. Getting trophies on that is really difficult, as well as trying to get SSS Rank.

I don't finish many games. I love game technology, and try a bunch, but finish very few. Just don't have the time, and I got my real pinball machines to mess with these days.
BUT I WILL be playing Final Fantasy 13, bought it on release day & its still in the plastic.

One game I did try that just killed me to where I had to quit due to difficulty...
Devil May Cry 3 (the original edition).

They later put out a special edition that I think had an option for an easier difficulty, I think.
But mastering that game with all its combo's and such, my brain just doesn't work like that.
My brain is more designed toward turn based RPG's (like Final Fantasy) and probably strategy games. I don't like to feel rushed!
And I can get into some of the FPS games. Though not the fully traditional stuff, games like Bioshock, Oblivion, Fallout 3....more my cup of tea. I also don't play online.
I just like single player campaigns (like the good ol' days) where I can play & not be bothered.

3: The End
4: Satan's Hollow
5: Tron (unless you know the cheats)
6: Ghosts and Goblins (this is one game that I would willingly destroy the original programming to remove this abomination from the world! Insanely hard!)
7: Defender
8: Mystic Marathon
9: Bubbles
10: Robotron 2084 (but in a good way biggrin.gif )

Hehe! But to be fair it depends on which chipset was in the particular machine you played. I think they released harder chipsets in later Pacman versions.

Dungeon Master emulator for the pc ( I used to own this game way back in the late 80's for my home computer at that time Atari 1040St with 1 meg memory! yeah you read it right 1 meg! hey that was big back then.) anyhow the game plays out in real time first person. You are responsible for keeping your 4 party members fed, rested, healed. i have never beaten this game even over these numerous decades. i got it again last month for my pc and am still constantly getting killed, or starving to death, yet I persevere, why? because i am a Masochist! You must look out for food or kill creatures for their flesh which you can eat.
anyhow, final fantasy ANYTHING was tough! out of all the ff series I only beat numbers 7, 9, 10 and 11. The earlier ones were so tough to beat i gave up. using cheats when i could. But ff7 I got thru even raising those goddam chocobos till I got the gold one (then racing it constantly!) and all that Materia gathering what memories you have brought back up. just when I thought it was safe to go back into...

Wow, your top 5 are some of my easiest games. Battletoads I can beat, right now, with no continues. At one time I could beat it with no cheats and on a single life. Same goes with Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Mega Man, Contra, Gradius series (especially Life Force) and Ghosts N' Goblins. I had all of these games down to an artwork back in the day... Of course I've lost my touch on a couple of them, but back then my goal was to master a game to where I could beat it on a single life. To this day I can still beat many NES & SNES games on a single life.

The one game that I've been working on lately is Silver Surfer on NES. A friend of mine come to me the other night saying that it's rated as one of the hardest games and he bet I couldn't even beat the first level... I took him on and beat the first level after a couple trys and now I'm working on beating the game.

"Y"'s for the sega master sytem as well as Phantasy Star, while not exactly a tough game it was long and took forever to complete. "Empire of the Sun" (tales of the Sun? something like that) this game came out for the PS1 way back when and it sucked! you had to wander a mostly empty planet for odd things. (rocks symbols, bones) and then stack then at your cave to 'reach the sun' While it DID show the power of the ol' playstation the game itself blew chunks, I know of no one who ever played it more than a half hour at any given sitting, it was that boring!

I personally don't like avgn, but my friend that told me to play is a big fan of avgn. He told me to play the game because of avgn's comments regarding Silver Surfer.

I've seen like 1 video of avgn... He's just a mental noob that has no appreciation for the classics. He doesn't actually spend any time actually playing the games. It seemed like he just loaded it, played a couple games and then bases his whole reviews on that short couple minutes he spent playing.

The games, and there are many of them where you need to learn the pattern and the pattern is the only way to progress. They are easy when the pattern is memorized, but without that knowledge are very hard.

For me the top of the list is either games that are too repetitive, for example Xevious, probably due to interest more than anything else, but on the very top of the list is the type of games found mostly on game consoles where you have to perform a sequence of controller actions to perform a single task. For example a left arrow and a circle and a triangle will show on screen and you have to move the stick left and press a button, then another button, in a short period of time, but it gets more complicated than this. It showed up in some Tomb Raider sequences as well, but probably goes back to Dragons Lair, or farther.

Computer Chess. Can you imagine the rest of the games being as hard as a hard level in computer chess? Getting your picture in the paper for winning a game of Paper Boy or Pooyan, or any other computer or console game. Chessmaster I can beat on level one and usually two, but it has what? 9 levels? I can beat nvChess every time as long as I don't wonder. In fact I have never played a Computer Chess that I could not beat on easy, not have I found one that I could beat on hard. I have only beaten a Computer Chess game on it's hardest one time, and I think that was nvChess. Still it's not a hard game to play, as this thread implies, it's just a hard game to win. Other games are hard just to play.

Elite 2, it was called Frontier. Does anyone remember it? It was Amiga and DOS 1993. It was friggen hard to play.

A lot of times "hard" for me also means "unplayable". Not that I don't appreciate a challenge, but I have to be having fun too. There were so many stupid games for the NES that were hard and not worth the effort. I remember when Final Fantasy came out for the NES. At the time (probably because I wasn't familiar with role-playing then) it was the hardest game I had played and I enjoyed every second of it. The next one for the game boy was hard and fun too. I never played many after that because of the amount of time it took.

I completely agree with Shockman about finding patterns. Most of the old arcade/8-bit games had patterns that you could find that would make them MUCH easier and more fun for your quarter. Then you don't have to think about what to do, you just react. My Dad freaks watching me play tetris, but my brain knows what to do with the blocks before I do. Patterns help me in pinball as well (but it has more variables to it).

My new barnes & noble Nook has chess on it, but I've yet to try it because I've been busy reading. I'm better at reading than chess. And I always win.

Crikey. Sorry to butt in here, but that's just completely wrong. James Rolfe, the guy that plays the AVGN, has to be one of the most knowledgeable guys when it comes to gaming. Would a mental noob that has no appreciation for the classics own this many NES games? (http://www.cinemassa...ection/NES.html)

I honestly have to ask, what episode did you watch? Who else would do reviews of Pong consoles, remember the awesome Swordquest contests and wrap them up in a nice condensed video, or deal with obscure unlicensed games (that also suck). Just sayin'.

...ahem. On topic note: Old Sierra adventures, Silver Surfer and the NTSC version of Dragon's Lair for the NES. Especially Dragon's Lair. The controls are pretty damn sluggish and one hit kills don't help.
