I've been working for a while to get this amazing piece of software to run on Linux, and I've run into a frustrating wall. Tables requiring ROMs will not play. I've been very careful to install them correctly in the .pinmame directory using only lower case (which is the default, according to what I could find) and when it didn't work, I edited the ini file to explicitly map the rom directory. I even spent half a day down a rabbit hole with an AI assistant trying to help me troubleshoot. In the end, I tried to install the windows version via Heroic Launcher (which wouldn't run) but I found that doing this caused my Linux install to work. Suddenly all of my ROM tables worked perfectly. I opened a terminal to see what was happening and found that after I installed the Windows version, the Linux version found the Windows Registry telling it where to find the rom folder. To be clear, the only ROMs I have installed anywhere on my system are in the default linux location. No ROMs were installed to the Windows installation, and the Windows installation was nowhere near the Linux installation (Home/Visual Pinball vs Home/Games/Heroic/Prefix/Visual Pinball).

 

I was able to reproduce this exact same behavior on new Linux installation of second computer.

 

Can anybody shed any light on what is happening, and maybe guide me toward an easier way to map the rom folder?

This works for me:

 

for Standalone - Added pinmame path to ~.vpinball/VPinballX.ini for it to find the roms and other files

 

Just point it to your visualpinball folder which contains /roms like PinMAMEPath = /home/ron/Pinball/VisualPinball  and it finds all the necessary files.

 

Running standalone there is no need for a pinmame folder. Hope this helps.  Extract and maintain all vp files there...
