Hi,

I'm looking into building a multipurpose cabinet and wanted to hear your thoughts, or if anyone knows of a similar solution so I don't have to do this from the ground up.

Here's the general idea.

- The main screen will be in a wooden enclosure with tempered glass top.  This would be just thick enough to hold the monitor and keep a consistent gap between the screen and the glass.

- The main body will be it's own unit and will be cut to accommodate the viewing angle.

Inside the body i would have two actuators.  The first one is used to pull a "shelf".  The second actuator is installed on that shelf and is used to flip the monitor's enclosure straight up.  So the idea is that i can go from pinball, to  vertical stand up arcade, which gets pulled back a foot or so so it's not right in your face.  A rotating mount could be used to spin the monitor to a horizontal position for widescreen games.

The arcade controls where the lock bar would be could then be swapped out for other control panels cut to fit.

It would be a bit challenging for sure. But the idea is that id have a virt pinball machine that can be converted easily to a vertical arcade format.  Then rotate the screen and pull the light guns out of the recess of the cab and I'm all set for time crisis or what have you.

The flip and pull would be handled by the actuators rated for 330 lbs.  They also hold position when power is lost  and prevent the enclosure from slamming back down.  Though I'm a bit skeptical on it, I'm told it can handle the enclosure with ease.   Replacing controls, rotating the enclosure, and anything else will be a manual process to save a costs/time/effort.

Does anyone know of an existing cab that does this?

It's an ambitious project. I thought about something like this years ago.

However, I think you will be continually be making design concessions that affects the other.  I suggest you just build two separate machines.

The pinball machine has to be rather large and very sturdy for nudging and holding all the parts.

The Upright Cabinet can and should be built to do all it's things (maybe multiple configs or control-tops).

You can share the computer if you must, but I think you will soon realize the computer needed for the Multi-Arcade MAME upright can just be an older used computer anyway.
