So many ways to play your Vpin goodness, from full cabinets to desktops, 3D glasses to VR. They all have their benefits and downsides but with AR now making it's first real breakout into the consumer sector, mainly through the Quest 3 headset and for the cash-flush minority the Apple Vision Pro, it looks like a potentially ideal tool for melding together the best parts of VR playfields/cabs along with the social aspect of being able to see your friends, nachos and beer at the same time.

Wondering if any of the VPX team have dipped their toes into the potential of AR integration and if it can leverage all the wonderful work already done with VR.

Seeing a full-color, 6-DOF playfield in 3D under my cabinet glass while being able to see the rest of the room and interact with people around would be a mighty crowning glory for all of the work that has been put into Vpins since day one.

Your thoughts???

For the cost of the monitor?
Have not really thought about buying a monitor that costs as much as someone's entire completed cab

If you are talking about what i think you are?

It's just the Apple Vision Pro which is the silly costing headset. The quest 3 has very respectable passthru and supports AR starting at $499.

I tried VR first but for medical reasons i gave it up, it is amazing to play VR pinball, but i actually like tinkering with the tables on my cabinet now

a few months on and am liking the cabinet more, no headset to wear , and especially summer it was too hot.

Plus you can play a cabinet for as long as you like within reason daily, VR headset wearing i wouldnt advise for more than a couple of hours at a sitting.

Not a fan of VR for pinball myself

1) Not fond of headaches, and i would have to be able to either focus then (cant do that on consumer grade stuff) or have prescription grade lenses, and a higher resolution
than most VR headsets provide

2) not terribly fond of the pinball table moving just cause my head moved. i dont look at the real thing from 10 different angles while playing, so i'd kind of prefer the virtual sit still also.

3) dont care about the surroundings in a fake room, do care about the surroundings in the real room though

4) never any guarantee that i will actually get to play something i start, i am constantly having to dash away for something, dont really want to be putting on and off a headset constantly.

5) too many other things i need to see most of the time.
cant see alarms on server monitors, my pizza rolls, wherever i set my drink or the amazon guy running away from an alligator (not exaggeration) etc.

VR is kind of neat, in a cockpit type simulation, and then again not.

It is kind of cool but at the same time, i wind up twisting my neck around magnitudes more then i have to with multiple displays

and the VR is slower to react and lacks peripheral vision.

More visually immersive yes, but more physically a pain in the arse (or the neck after a while)

On the other hand, handing VR to other people and then sitting back and watching them wreck the place, or themselves is pretty damned funny

I agree that VR is great and also way too limiting in many areas.

The simple fact is that people don’t want a diving mask on their face for any extended period of time. I am holding out for glasses with micro retinal projection that shoots the image into your eyeballs rather than mushing screens in front of your face. AR has a promising future but the tech is still way too clunky.

I still enjoy a good game of beat saber now and again though.

I used to have a ball with my drones that I fitted with head-tracking cameras. It felt like I could fly. Not sure if headsets hastened the failure of my vision or not, but it stopped deteriorating rapidly when I quit flying RC.  It's frightening losing orientation with a helicopter and having a flying lawnmower coming at you!  At least this hobby won't kill me :)

I think headsets free VR/AR wont be too far in the future.

I am not sure if mixed reality is exactly the same thing as AR but @Gimli has a mixed reality setup that appears to produce the same result that you are getting.  He posted several videos here:

They are the same thing, for VR pinball, if you could stream and anchor 1,2 or 3 screens from your existing cabinet then it would get you 90% of the way there.

@toxie What do you think about the video I posted above? Mapping a PF onto a cab and using the persistent real-world object anchoring seems like it would be a killer feature to me.

I imagine AR might be fun on a Real table too, you could have some crazy FX going on, and even swap out playfield art. It could look like an FX3 table with the FX on.

those already sort of existed to some extent

hybrid tables with a CRT and projector

though i dont want to be the guy engineering a table with a thick polycarbonate playfield

with the custom LCD panel underneath, with all the holes in the LCD for carious fixtures.

At least no lamps or inserts would be required though.

No need to engineer anything in reality, AR could be applied to any existing table just through the software, so you could theoretically play a table in a public venue with your headset, and have all the virtual fx visible only to you.

Dunno that it would be a commercial success?

Work yes, but make sales when spectators cannot see it?
Not sure.

Yeah, that's the downside to VR/AR with a headset, it's really a one person experience, even when you interact with others in a VR space.
